BEIJING, Sept. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- China will "vigorously" expand its imports of key products as the nation strives to cut its trade surplus amid growing protectionism against the world's largest exporter, a senior Chinese trade official said on Monday."We will especially encourage imports of products the nation is short of, especially advanced technology and key equipment," said Chong Quan, China's deputy international trade representative.Special attention will be paid to expanding imports from countries that China has a trade surplus with, he said at the China Import Forum organized by the Ministry of Commerce.Due to their domestic economic woes and political pressure, some developed countries, in particular the US, have accused China of piling up trade surpluses through policies such as an undervalued currency. This argument conveniently ignores other factors at play, such as their own export restrictions.Nonetheless, in the first six months of this year, US exports to China increased 35.7 percent year-on-year, 13 percentage points higher than its overall export growth, according to US figures.Despite the surge of its trade surplus in July, which stood at .7 billion, China will see the surplus drop dramatically for the year to about 0 billion, compared to 0 billion in 2009 and 0 billion in 2008, trade officials said. The country even registered a rare trade deficit of .2 billion in March. As a result of the shift in strategy, the ratio of China's current account (mainly trade of goods) balance to its gross domestic product has been dropping continually since 2007, said Zhang Yansheng, director of the Institute of Foreign Trade at the National Development and Reform Commission."China's processing trade (bringing in goods and exporting finished products), which is the bulk of its exports, could plummet in the coming five years," he said.

BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- The central parity rate of the yuan, China's currency Renminbi (RMB), jumped 181 basis points, or 0.27 percent, Friday to a new record high at 6.6830 per U.S. dollar, according to the data released by the China Foreign Exchange Trading System.Friday's central parity rate beat the previous record of 6.6936 on Sept. 29.The yuan has picked up its strength against the U.S. dollars and seen increased volatility in the trading days since the People's Bank of China (PBOC), the central bank, announced on June 19 this year to increase exchange rate flexibility.Based on Friday's central parity, the Chinese currency has strengthened against the U.S. dollar by 2.12 percent from the rate of 6.8275 per U.S. dollar that was set a day before the PBOC's pledge to increase flexibility. On China's foreign exchange spot market, the yuan can rise or fall 0.5 percent from the central parity rate during trading each day.The PBOC released the yuan's central parity rates against a basket of currencies -- the U.S. dollar, the euro, the Japanese yen, the Hong Kong dollar, the British pound and the Malaysian Ringgit. The yuan's parity rate against the euro was set by the central bank at 9.2951 Friday, higher from 9.1329 on Sept. 30, the last trading day.The yuan's rate against 100 yen was 8.1040 Friday, compared with 7.9999 on Sept. 30.The Chinese currency fell 61 basis points against the British pound with the central parity rate being set at 10.6079 from 10.6018 on the previous trading day.The central parity of RMB against the U.S. dollar is based on a weighted average of enquired prices from all market makers before the opening of the market in each business day.The central parity of RMB against the other five currencies is based on the central rate of RMB against the U.S. dollar of the same business day as well as the exchange rates of the five currencies against the U.S. dollar at 9 a.m. (0100 GMT) of the same business day in the international foreign exchange market.

BEIJING, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping has urged authorities of a southeastern province to press ahead with its reforms and opening-up, and to embrace innovations in its economic development. In his four-day inspection tour in Fujian Province that began Friday, Xi spent time visiting high-tech enterprises, inquiring about villagers' incomes and held talks with university students.Efforts should be made to improve people's livelihood and solve practical difficulties for them with regard to employment, medical care, housing and children's schooling, Xi said during his visit to villages and urban communities. When visiting areas hit by June's torrential rains and massive floods, Xi urged local authorities to continue with disaster-relief work, rebuild damaged homes and agricultural infrastructures, as well as increase support for enterprises. In the coastal city of Xiamen, Xi urged government administrations in Fujian to take proactive measures to offer services to, and create "better conditions", for people from Taiwan.Further, efforts should be made to expand the scope and upgrade the level of cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, he said.

GUIYANG, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- China Wednesday called for the European Union to have a balanced, objective, comprehensive understanding of the world's largest developing country during an upgraded strategic dialogue held in the underdeveloped province of Guizhou.State Councilor Dai Bingguo told the EU side that despite rapid economic growth, China has no possibility to be arrogant, nor is it pretending to be a richer or poorer country than it actually is, with unfathomable strategic intentions, according to Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying."China expects the EU to treat itself as an equal," Dai was quoted by Fu as telling EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton. The meeting was the fifth strategic dialogue between the two sides and the first since it was upgraded from vice foreign-minister level to its current level.China had made remarkable achievements since its reform and opening up to the outside, but it is still a developing country, Dai said.China has a clear understanding of its position in the international arena and its current level of development, Dai said, adding it will focus on economic development in the long run.China has not been, nor is, nor will be in the pursuit of hegemony, but adheres to the path of peaceful development, Dai said.China needs a peaceful international environment for development and its development will promote global peace and development, he said.Ashton echoed Dai, saying that the European Union should have a comprehensive understanding of China. The EU's view of China's development was one topic of the one-day closed-door meeting."It is one major aim of this strategic dialogue to enhance mutual understanding between China and the European Union. Both sides have a strong will to better understand each other and promote political mutual trust, so as to promote bilateral cooperation," said Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying in an interview with Xinhua. The two sides also discussed the international situation and the development of the China-EU relationship. On the international situation, China urged all countries to join hands to cope with global challenges. On China-EU relations, China said it supports EU integration. The two sides should strengthen political dialogue, enhance strategic mutual trust, expand cooperation, properly handle sensitive issues and have more people-to-people exchanges, so as to promote a strategic partnership of cooperation.

BRUSSELS, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday urged European political and business leaders not to join the "chorus" on pressuring China on the appreciation of the Renminbi, or RMB.China's trade surplus was explained by the specific structures of the economies involved in international trade instead of the exchange rate of the RMB, Wen said at the Sixth China-EU Business Summit here."The (past) appreciations of the RMB did not lead to any changes in the trend (of China recording trade surplus)," Wen said, referring to the fact that China continued to record trade surpluses after it initiated an exchange rate reform in 1994 although the RMB has appreciated by an accumulated 55 percent since then. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao addresses the 6th China-European Union Business Summit in Brussels, capital of Belgium, Oct. 6, 2010.China also continued to record trade surpluses against the United States after it initiated a second exchange rate reform in 2005 to allow the RMB to appreciate 22 percent against the U.S. dollar since then, Wen said."The trade issue should not be politicized. It is an issue of the (trade) structure," the premier said.Chinese enterprises were still mostly at the lower end of the global industry chain. China has a surplus in commodity trade but deficits in the trade of services. It has surpluses against the United States and the European Union but deficits against South Korea, Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Wen said.
