SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As the unofficial start of summer came and went, one thing that many San Diegans were without was the use of community pools.Reopening community and apartment pools is listed in San Diego County's pilot program to phase into California's Stage 3 of reopening early. The county has submitted a letter petitioning the state to be allowed to enter the pilot program, but has yet to hear back.RELATED: Is it safe to swim in pools this summer amid COVID-19? CDC offers guidanceWhile Memorial Day weekend say many Americans looking to cool off, the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention offered new guidance on community pools. The agency says currently, "there is no evidence that the virus that causes COVID-19 can be spread to people through the water in pools, hot tubs, spas, or water play areas. Proper operation and maintenance (including disinfection with chlorine and bromine) of these facilities should inactivate the virus in the water."But for San Diego County, health officials are leaning on the state for the go ahead on pools. Sarah Sweeney, communications officer with the county's Health & Human Services Agency, says the risks go beyond pool chemicals.RELATED: Gov. Newsom: Reopening guidelines for California gyms, fitness businesses coming soon"In the case of pools, it’s not the water that’s the concern. It’s the gathering of individuals across different households for extended periods," says Sweeney. The county's public health orders allow for water activity in the ocean, bays, and lakes. But health officials says it's unlikely that large groups will swim together in the ocean and people aren't expected to wear facial coverings while engaged in active water sports. 1722

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Customs and Border Protection officers say more than 300 pounds of drugs were seized from a truck at the Otay Mesa cargo port of entry this week.CBP officers say a tractor-trailer truck was stopped on Thursday at about 7 a.m. The driver was carrying a shipment of recycled cardboard, CBP said. The truck was referred to an imaging scan and exam, where an anomaly was detected in the truck's cab.CBP says officers removed 64 packages from two duffel bags hidden inside a sleeper compartment: 59 containing 286 pounds of methamphetamine and five bags containing 26 pounds of fentanyl. The narcotics, and tractor-trailer were seized and the driver, a 36-year-old Mexican citizen with a valid B1/B2 border-crossing card, was turned over to ICE and booked into the Metropolitan Correctional Center to face federal charges."Even in the midst of a global pandemic, we continue to see attempts to move hard narcotics across the border and into U.S. communities," said Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations for CBP in San Diego. "CBP officers at all of our nation’s legal border crossings remain on the job and vigilant during these unprecedented times." 1174

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cathedral Catholic High School students took part in a protest Tuesday against a ban on skirts as uniform options for girls. Officials at the Carmel Valley school changed the dress code Friday for the 2019-2020 school year. CCHS said it would ban the uniform skirts, citing multiple detentions based on enforcement. Female students will have the option to wear pants, capri pants, or Bermuda shorts, the school said. “By removing the option for girls to wear skirts at a Catholic school not only demeans me as a female, but makes me wonder if we are moving towards a gender neutral society. I believe this is sexist, patriarchal and sexualizes the female students unnecessarily,” said freshman student Rachel Donaldson. RELATED: Cathedral Catholic High School girls protest 'sexist' ban on skirtsDonaldson also cited an email about the dress code change she said was sent from Principal Kevin Calkins to parents and students Friday, calling it “disturbing.” “The most disturbing: ‘Male faculty feel uncomfortable addressing female students about the length of their skirts.’ If a male teacher has a problem addressing student's skirt lengths, then they have no business being anywhere near a high school or a female minor. They are there to educate and guide- this is a simple task,” wrote Donaldson. A student created a petition on Change.org to keep skirts as part of the uniform option. By Tuesday afternoon, about 3,000 people had signed online. “It’s not practical to make girls go out and buy new uniforms when they’ve already paid hundreds for the ones they currently wear, our parents are already investing enough money on our education,” said commenter Mia M. on the Change.org petition. “Females should be able to choose what they feel comfortable in and not have their sense of elegance and femininity taken away from them. Making the switch to shorts is no way a practical or ethical solution.” 1933

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As Seaworld San Diego reopens its doors this weekend, an East County grandmother and passholder says she and her grandson won't be making a visit.Visiting SeaWorld is one of Rose Becker's favorite things to do with her 4-year-old grandson Vincent."He just loves walking around and looking at the dolphins, orcas, and sea lions," said Becker. So when SeaWorld announced they would be reopening, she got excited.RELATED: Several San Diego County businesses to reopen indoors with limits under new guidance"I was planning on taking him Sunday. Was so excited to hear SeaWorld was back open. My grandson was so excited ... and then my excitement, down to frustration," said Becker. She was frustrated because of the cost. SeaWorld is opening through its weekend Zoo Days Bayside BBQ and Brews events. It's reservation only with a limited capacity. The park's attractions will be limited to outdoor animal exhibits and shows. A ticket will include food, drink, and merchandise. Passholders like Becker get a complimentary ticket but must pay for the lanyard for the food and beverages. She would receive a more-than-50% discount, but Becker still has to shell out for Vincent and herself, a cost she can't afford.RELATED: North County leaders join Legoland to demand state give direction for businesses to open"I'm retired and on a limited income ... I'm very frustrated and angry that I can't take my grandson to go visit SeaWorld, when it's open to the public who wants to pay for a special ticketed event, and not to us who have been paying all this time as passholders," said Becker. She's not alone. In the past few days, ABC 10News has received emails and Facebook messages from passholders upset about having to pay for the extra cost."We're being treated like second class citizens in essence," said Becker.SeaWorld plans to hold the weekend events until late September, and then reassess a true opening. The park has announced it will be extending expiration dates for passholders and upgrading them to the next tier of benefits. 2061
