SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Schools in San Diego County are readying emergency plans in case the coronavirus prompts schools closures like the ones in Washington state.At least a dozen schools in the greater Seattle area were closed Monday after health officials confirmed at least six deaths linked to the virus in that state.The San Diego Unified School District said in addition to cleaning efforts by its custodial staff, it was lining up outside contractors who could “provide large-scale deep-cleaning of classrooms or entire schools should it become necessary.”The County Office of Education said it planned to distribute a template pandemic response plan to all 42 districts soon with guidance on everything from prevention to post-outbreak recovery.“We’re lucky we don’t have any cases of community spread in San Diego County, so we have some time,” said COE spokeswoman Music Watson. “We’re using that time to think through, if we need to close schools, what about e-learning? What about community kitchens?”The Office of Education is encouraging districts to consider a range of “distance learning” options, in the event of longer-term school closures. Those options include issuing photocopies of lesson plans, posting recorded lessons online, and conducting teacher “check-ins” and tutorials by phone or web conferencing.Several districts have sent letters home to parents in recent days encouraging discussions about hygiene and handwashing, including Sweetwater Union High School District and Chula Vista Elementary School District.“We get that people are a little scared and we want to make sure we do as much as we can,” said CVESD spokesman Anthony Millican.Millican said local district have experience responding to viral outbreaks. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego’s City Council voted 6-3 Monday evening to approve a five-year lease extension for the Campland on the Bay campground. The city struck a deal with Campland to expand into De Anza Cove and remove the crumbling mobile home park. Earlier in the day Monday, competing rallies took place outside council chambers. The issue on the agenda Monday – the future of about 75 acres on the northwest portion of Mission Bay. Currently, it’s an RV Park next to a mobile home park crumbling with asbestos and warning signs keeping the public out. The operator of the RV park is terminating its lease later in June. Campland on the Bay has operated for 50 years just to the west. It’s offering to take over the lease for the RV park and add the mobile home park for five years. It would do ,000,000 of improvements, including getting rid of old homes. A group called the ReWild Mission Bay Coalition is fighting back. The coalition wants the city to pursue restoring the area to its natural habitat, fearing that entering into what’s supposed to be a temporary arrangement could end up becoming a long-tern solution. A staff member with the city told the council this won’t stop the city from pursuing future plans for De Anza Cove. 1257

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego State University is going to lose its one and only Christian sorority house. Builders plan to tear it down and put up more housing for students.Alpha Delta Chi sorority sister Madison Zeber walked us through the halls of the sorority house near campus, where 15 women live. The walls are covered with old, handwritten messages of faith. On the outside of the house, there’s a new message. A notice was recently posted by the City of San Diego, of plans to close the only Christian sorority. A private party plans to replace it with 42 units of new housing, intended for students. A neighboring single-family home and fraternity house will also be lost. “It would definitely be heart-breaking,” says sorority sister Carissa Thompson. She was a transfer student and has been living in the house for a year. “Coming here, I definitely wanted to make sure that I had a good, Christian community and I definitely found that here.”The SDSU Research Foundation owns and leases the houses, and tells 10News that the development plans were announced last fall. The sisters won't have to vacate the sorority house until 2020, when their lease is up. “We're trying to fight for this and take it one step at a time,” says the sorority president Alexis Kojo.It’s just one of a series of housing concerns for SDSU students. By this fall, all current, non-local sophomore students must live on-campus. It's called the Sophomore Success Program. Some students say it’s a costly requirement for those of little means, but the school's website reads, “Data show that students who live on campus are better prepared academically, enjoy an increased sense of community and campus connectedness, and graduate at faster rates than those who do not.”Alpha Delta Chi’s lot will not be used for Sophomore Success Program, but that doesn't change much for these sisters. No matter what, they'll have to start packing. “Our way of connecting to the school would be gone. Our sense of identity as Christians on this campus [and] SDSU students would be kind of taken away,” adds Kojo.The sorority says there are public meetings to discuss the redevelopment plans. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - SDG&E says the company is ready to meet increased demand over the next few decades, as temperatures rise across California.According to a recent climatology study, the number of days in San Diego where the heat index will top 100 degrees is expected to jump to 4 per year by 2050. The study says it will be at 7 per year by 2100. By contrast, historically, San Diego has averaged less than one day per year above 100 degrees.That means more people will turn to air conditioners and fans to keep cool, creating more demand for energy throughout the year."This is one of our top priorities," says SDG&E Communications Director Denice Menard. "We know the summertime surge is coming."Menard says SDG&E engineers have run thousands of simulations to test the power grid. The company has also invested heavily in solar and wind turbine energy to increase supply.Menard also says the new 15-mile transmission line from Sycamore to Penasquitos will help deliver energy to areas that need it. And a new synchronous condenser in the North County will help manage surges in demand."There have been so many preparations and simulations done by our engineers," Menard says. "We’ve done everything we can to make sure we’re prepared and that San Diego is safe and can beat the heat."SDG&E is also looking to their customers for help. The company hopes their new Time of Use plans will encourage people to avoid energy use from 4-9 pm, when the temperatures are highest and more people are home.
