LA MESA (KGTV)- Friday evening could have been one of the last times the community sees the farmers market on La Mesa Boulevard. On Tuesday the La Mesa City Council will vote to determine the future of the farmers market. Scott Strickland is a vendor at the La Mesa Farmers Market and has been for four years. Strickland tells 10News, “it would be about probably 25 percent of my gross revenue.” Strickland does not want the farmers market to leave La Mesa Boulevard. The farmers market has been at this location for one year and Strickland says it’s been the best location for the vendors, “I would say maybe 10 times the money we were making over there.” Friday, 10News tried talking with business owners who oppose the farmers market being on La Mesa Boulevard. They all have brick and mortar locations that they say are suffering on Friday evenings. One restaurant owner showed us empty tables during their happy hour, another shared they had to cut down staffing on Friday nights because they were losing about three thousand dollars. Both sides are prepared to attend the meeting on Tuesday night and share their concerns and financial burdens with city councilmembers. 1184

LA MESA, CA (KGTV) — Parents of children in an East County school district were looking forward to their kids returning to campus at the end of this month, but that might not happen.Students in the La Mesa-Spring Valley District are scheduled to return Nov. 30, but if San Diego County's COVID-19 cases push the county back to the most restrictive purple tier, that will not happen.Meg Jacobsen is the executive director of the district's education services. Her seven-year-old daughter is also a student in the district."My daughter loves to go to virtual school, but being on a zoom all day can be hard for students, especially little ones," said Jacobsen.Under the state's health mandate, schools that are already open in some capacity would not be affected by moving back a tier, but schools that are closed would not be able to open."If schools have opened for in-person learning, then they can continue with what they are doing. At some schools, where they may have opened several grade levels, say they opened K-3, and they planned to continue adding grade levels, those schools would be able to continue doing that," said Bob Mueller, program specialist at the San Diego County Office of Education.The mandate applies to individual school sites."In other places, where you might have one school in a school district opened and other schools not, those schools would be frozen," said Mueller.Jacobsen is hoping the county's number of COVID-19 cases goes down."This has been a rocky road the past six months for us. Our teachers have been just absolutely amazing," said Jacobsen.The district initially planned to open in mid-October but pushed back the date partly because of the outbreak of cases at nearby San Diego State."Like so many things in 2020, we've had to, I think the word is, pivot, make plans A, B, C and then when we find something new, we are prepared, but we have to be prepared and adjust the way we go," said Jacobsen.San Diego Unified is still planning to bring more students back on campus in January. Oceanside's school district is bringing back elementary students on Nov. 9, middle, and high school students are scheduled to return in January.Schools impacted by the purple tier would not be able to open until mid-December."Schools that haven't reopened in any capacity would essentially be frozen there for a minimum of five weeks," said Mueller."It's a waiting game at this point," said Jacobsen. LITHIA, Fla. — A Tampa Bay teenager is thankful for the device on her wrist after suffering a scary medical episode at The Crossing Church in Brandon, Florida. "I didn't know what was going on at all and it was just out of the blue," Deanna Recktenwald said. A warning appeared notifying the 18-year-old that her resting heart rate hit 190 beats per minute. "It was alarming that the watch was telling us to seek medical attention," said Stacey Recktenwald, Deanna's mother. "I didn't even know that it had the capability of giving us that alert."Stacey Recktenwald is a registered nurse and did not initially question the accuracy of the watch's reading. Staff at a walk-in clinic confirmed the teen's rapid heartbeat. "I was surprised, it was right on," said Stacey.The Recktenwald's said the watch saved Deanna's life. After arriving at the emergency room, doctors at Tampa General Hospital soon discovered Deanna suffers from chronic kidney disease. Both kidneys are only operating at 20 percent and she will likely require a future transplant. "Instantly started to pray and thank God for her having that watch," said Tom Recktenwald, Deanna's father. The high-tech Christmas gift came to the rescue, uncovering a serious health problem that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. "Now that we have some answers to why this is happening we can prevent something major from happening down the road," said Deanna. Stacey Recktenwald recently wrote Apple to thank the tech giant for its life-saving feature.  1601

LEXINGTON, Kent. - Students on the University of Kentucky campus will put a theory to the test by using more testing."Anyone who is quarantined would be tested on day three, day five, day seven, day 10, and day 14," said Dr. Robert DiPaola, the College of Medicine dean.The goal is to see if the 14-days of quarantine are a little excessive."Whether that initial testing period, so, for example, day three, or day five, or day shirk, was predictive of them being OK on day 14," DiPaola added.If enough tests come back negative in under 14 days, researchers feel as if they'd have their answers, and students might be able to get back outside much sooner."I think it's awesome," said freshman Blake Burden. "To shorten quarantine and get back to class and start socializing and seeing people again would be great."There's an added medical benefit to this program too."Mental health and well-being. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officials are investigating a triple shooting at the Circus Circus Hotel and Casino that occurred Saturday night at around 7:29 p.m. Responding officers located the three victims suffering from gunshot wounds upon arrival and they were transported to UMC after being stabilized.
