GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (AP) — The man who killed four people and wounded two others in random stabbings across two Southern California cities is a gang member with a violent criminal record who had served time in prison, authorities said Thursday.Zachary Castaneda "could have injured or killed many other people" had he not been arrested Wednesday while carrying out attacks and robberies during the two-hour wave of violence that began in Garden Grove, the city's police Chief Tom DaRe said.It wasn't immediately known if Castaneda, 33, had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf. He was scheduled to be arraigned Friday.Castaneda was taken into custody when he walked out of a convenience store in the neighboring city of Santa Ana, dropping a knife and a gun he had taken from a security guard he had just killed, police said. The suspect was covered in blood, DaRe said.Castaneda was kept in restraints as detectives tried to interview him, the chief said at a press conference."He remained violent with us through the night," DaRe said. "He never told us why he did this."Castaneda has a conviction for possession of meth for sale while armed with an assault rifle, DaRe said. The father said his passport, green card, sword collection and even a dining table were taken.Erwin Hauprich said his father never called back and he went to check on him after hearing there had been a stabbing at the complex.A police officer told him that Helmuth Hauprich had been taken to the hospital, where he died, the son said. He said he was told his father's roommate was killed in the apartment.A body was removed from the complex by stretcher Thursday.Erwin Hauprich said his father left Romania first for Germany and then the United States more than two decades ago. He said his father worked on an assembly line and lived in the complex for years.He said Helmuth Hauprich was a down-to-earth man who strove to make a life for his family.Police said surveillance cameras caught some of the carnage."We have video showing him attacking these people and conducting these murders," Whitney said.Whitney said the man lived in a Garden Grove apartment building where he stabbed two men during some kind of confrontation. One man died inside and the other at a hospital.Whitney said a bakery also was robbed.The bakery owner, Dona Beltran, said she was sitting in her car charging her cellphone when she saw a tattooed man get out of a Mercedes and go inside the business. Beltran, 45, followed him inside to offer help, but kept quiet when she saw him trying to open the cash register.She then ran out of the shop and yelled she was being robbed before taking refuge in a nearby dental office, she said. He ended up taking the entire register with him, which had about 0, she said."I saved myself because I was in the car," she said in Spanish on Thursday. "Thank God I am alive."The man also robbed an insurance business, where a 54-year-old employee was stabbed several times and was expected to survive.The woman "was very brave," Whitney said. GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – A 5-year-old girl suffered serious injuries after she was attacked by a bear overnight in east Orchard Mesa.The girl had gone outside around 2:30 a.m. early Sunday to investigate noises she thought were being made by her dog, the girl’s mother told Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers.But the girl’s mother heard her daughter screaming and went outside to see a “large black bear” dragging her daughter, CPW officials said. The bear dropped the girl after her mother screamed at it. Their home is in the east Orchard Mesa area, above the Colorado River corridor, officials said.The girl was transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction with serious injuries, CPW said. Radio traffic from first responders said she had been bitten on her back and near her head.Officers were tracking the bear, along with federal wildlife officials, on Sunday morning. GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — David Burkard, a 28-year-old Emergency Room doctor at Spectrum in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is currently working on his residency, but about two weeks ago he was a patient at the same hospital, due to COVID-19.“I woke up on a Thursday morning, just not really feeling like myself. I had a fever, cough, short of breath, fatigue, all the classic symptoms”, he explained. But Burkard admits, as someone who runs five days a week with no underlying health concerns, he wasn’t real concerned about how it would affect him. “I am a young healthy guy. Probably prior to getting it, I probably at one point said, ‘I hope I can just get it and get it over with,' because I didn’t think it would hit me,” Burkard added.Nearly a week of not feeling well, Burkard thought he was getting better, but his symptoms quickly took a turn for the worse he explains. "On day six, someone dropped a package off on my door and I got up out of bed and went and picked it up. And it’s about ten steps to my door, and I bent over and picked up the package and was like, ‘Oh, that’s not normal.’” A couple of days later, he went to his own workplace, the Spectrum Health Emergency Room, due to his dropping oxygen levels, which went from the high 90s to the low 80s. “That’s when you start to worry that like, your organs, your liver, kidney, brain, heart start to not get enough oxygen,” he said.After three days in the hospital and receiving supplemental oxygen, convalescent plasma and Remdesivir, Burkard turned the corner and was released to go home.He now thinks this experience will make him an even more compassionate doctor once he’s allowed to return to the work that he loves. “I think it definitely changes the way I practice medicine, going into those conversations in the future. The 75-year-old man who says goodbye to his 75-year-old wife before we put a breathing tube in, or the 50-year-old man who has to zoom with his family because he’s going downhill quickly. Those are experiences that we, as emergency medicine physicians, deal with every day. I mean, my experience was not the same, I did not have to get a breathing tube. HONG KONG — Hong Kong Disneyland Park is closing temporarily following the city’s decision to ban public gatherings of more than four people because of the coronavirus pandemic. Disney officials posted on the resort’s website that the Hong Kong park was closing Wednesday until further notice. The resort’s hotels will remain open with adjusted levels of service.
