DAMASCUS, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- China's top political adviser Jia Qinglin arrived here Friday for an official friendly visit to Syria.In a written speech released at the airport, Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), hailed the development of bilateral ties between China and Syria since they established diplomatic relations in 1956."China attaches great importance to the friendly ties with Syria," he said, pledging joint efforts with Syria to enhance political mutual trust, boost traditional friendship, bolster substantial cooperation and promote common development.Jia said he was looking forward to exchanging views with Syrian leaders on the further development of bilateral relations and on major international and regional issues of common concern."I believe my visit will help the people of China and Syria better know each other and boost their friendship," he said.Syria is the first leg of Jia's four-nation tour from Oct. 29 to Nov. 11. BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- China Thursday expressed its hope that East Asian cooperation would deepen through the upcoming series of leaders' meetings in Hanoi, Vietnam."China attaches importance to and actively takes part in East Asian cooperation. BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- China launched a large-scale tree-planting program against soil-erosion along the Three-Gorge Dam section of the country's largest Yangtze River Friday, with two launching ceremonies held in Beijing and Chongqing, simultaneously.The program is aimed to raise funds from individual and institutional donors for planting trees on 3.8 million mu (253,333 hectares) on the banks of the Yangtze River in Chongqing.Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), is the honorary chairman of the organizational committee of the program.Vice Premier Hui Liangyu and Chongqing Party chief Bo Xilai attended and addressed the ceremony in Beijing.Hui spoke highly of the tree-planting program, saying that it would be new probe for the bio-environmental protection of major rivers in the country as well as a new, great contribution to the afforestation and protection of the Yangtze River.The vice premier recognized that the Yangtze River is still facing severe bio-environmental deterioration and soil erosion, though notable achievements have been made in the afforestation efforts along the river in the past decades.In his speech, Bo pledged that Chongqing will take three to five years to increase the forest coverage in the dam area to 65 percent, from the present 22.2 percent. Currently, soil-erosion has covered over 20,000 square kilometers, about 50 percent of the total area, he noted.According to previous reports, Chongqing plans to raise over 10 billion yuan (1.5 billion U.S. dollars) from institutional and individual donors for the tree-planting program.

BERLIN, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- China and Germany pledged on Tuesday to enhance their efforts in coordinating macroeconomic policies and opposing trade and investment protectionism, according to a joint communique issued after a meeting between Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his German counterpart Angela Merkel.The meeting, focusing on China's relations with Germany and Europe, was held at the Meseberg Palace, 70 km north of Germany's capital of Berlin, on the eve of the 13th China-European Union (EU) summit in Brussels.China and Germany are two of the world's largest exporters. China surpassed Germany last year to become the number one exporter.The communique said both sides agreed to attach importance to a series of dialogue mechanisms, including the strategic dialogue, the dialogue between nations ruled by law and human rights dialogue.China and Germany also agreed to expand political mutual trust and deepen strategic coordination between China and Europe.
