LOS ANGELES (CNS) - As part of its stepped-up response to a surge in COVID-19 cases, California is tightening its requirements for face coverings, issuing revised rules that mandate everyone wear a mask at all times outside the home when within six feet of people from other households.The revised guidance issued Monday states that residents "must wear face coverings when they are outside the home," unless they are more than six feet away from other people.People who are outdoors but not close to anyone else do not have to wear a mask, but they must have one with them to put on in case they come within six feet of other people. LOS ANGELES (CNS) -- Los Angeles County's top public health official, who has led the fight against the coronavirus, said Monday her life has been threatened repeatedly but promised to continue to "follow the science."Barbara Ferrer, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, issued a statement that began, as her daily briefings do, with a recounting of the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths in the county to date and a moment to honor those who have been lost."COVID-19 has upended thousands and thousands of lives all across the nation. The virus has changed our world as we know it, and people are angry. As of today, 83,397 cases have been reported in Los Angeles County and 3,120 people have died from this virus," Ferrer said. "We mourn every single one of those deaths, and we are working tirelessly to slow the spread of COVID- 19 and find good solutions for the future of our communities."Ferrer then noted that an increasing number of public health officials nationwide have been threatened with violence. "As public health officials, we try hard not to be influenced by partisan politics or public sentiment -- we must follow the science in order to save lives. And the science says if we don't change the way we go about our daily routines, we could pay for it with our lives or the lives of others around us."She urged people, as she does daily, to wear face coverings to stop the spread of the virus, comparing the masks to seatbelts, which the public also resisted."The data proves that seatbelts save lives, and the data also proves that wearing a face covering will help stop transmission of COVID-19, which will save lives. LOS ANGELES (AP) -- California health officials have released guidelines for elementary schools to seek waivers allowing them to offer classroom instruction in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.Officials on Monday said some public and private schools in 38 counties on a state watch list, including San Diego County, can seek waivers from local health officials if they have plans for keeping students and staff safe and meet certain criteria.But the state says school reopenings can't be considered in counties with the highest rates of COVID-19 infection. Lockdown has been been the way of life for many months at the Central Union Mission. No residents are allowed in or out, as part of an effort to keep COVID-19 out of this homeless shelter.“That was a difficult choice for us, but our goal from the beginning was to provide a safe place for homeless men to be fed, sheltered and be COVID-free,” said Joseph Mettimano, president of the Central Union Mission. “And so not allowing new folks come in, that was heartbreaking.”It was heartbreaking but effective.Since the start of the pandemic, there have been no cases of COVID-19 at the shelter. It’s a feat they weren’t sure would be possible at the start of the pandemic.“We started working on this process very early with the same countermeasures that everybody else was doing: handwashing, sanitizing hand railings, all those types of things,” Mettimano said.That also included regular health screenings for residents and staff, all of which combined to create a coronavirus-free zone.“I think we've gotten close. The guys that are here in the facility over the last six months and encouraging one another to try to follow the protocols that the mission has [in] place,” said Jonathan Moncado, a resident at the shelter.While the shelter lockdown hasn’t been ideal for him and the other 100 or so men there, Moncado said there is a sense the sacrifice has been worth it.“We just are thankful to the staff that they've kept us safe for all these months,” he said. “There hasn't been one confirmed case or any deaths.”The same can’t be said everywhere.Across the country, people who are homeless haven’t completely avoided COVID-19.The most recent numbers show 400 of the 12,000 people who are homeless in Seattle tested positive for the virus, with at least two deaths. COVID-19 has infected 1,300 of the 66,000 people who are homeless in Los Angeles, with more than 30 deaths. Meanwhile, in Phoenix, about 500 of the estimated 7,400 tested positive, with at least 9 deaths.Yet, the numbers available may not be the most accurate. COVID-19 testing for those who are homeless isn’t widespread.
