TAIPEI, June 21 (Xinhua) -- The economic authority of Taiwan has approved investment totaling 77.13 million U.S. dollars from the Chinese mainland, according to a statistics report released Monday.From the end of June last year when Taiwan opened to mainland investment, the authority had approved 52 investment projects on the island by the end of May, said the report from the authority.The top three industries for mainland investment -- accounting for 44.84 percent of the total mainland investment -- were computers, electronics and optical products manufacturing.At the same time, the mainland saw a sharp increase in investment from Taiwan. In the first five months of this year, the Taiwan authority approved investments in 187 projects on the mainland.New investment from Taiwan on the mainland from January to May totalled 4.59 billion U.S. dollars, a year-on-year increase of 239.9 percent.About 75 percent of the Taiwan investment in the first five months went to Jiangsu, Guangdong, Fujian and Shandong provinces, said the report.

HARARE, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Secretary-General Sindiso Ngwenya on Tuesday urged China to enter into joint ventures with Africa's largest regional trading and economic grouping to capitalize on the customs union that was launched last year.The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, boasting 19 member states and a population of more than 450 million, is endowed with vast natural and human resources that make it a fertile investment destination, Ngwenya said."With a combined population of 456 million and a combined Gross Domestic Product of 450 billion U.S. dollars, this region is very rich in natural resources, rich in human resources and land for agriculture."This region will therefore become the region of first choice for investment and has the potential to feed the whole world," Ngwenya told Xinhua in an interview.He said China should take COMESA as its preferred investment destination and increase trade with Africa's largest trading and economic grouping.Ngwenya has previously urged more Chinese investment in the manufacturing sector so that Africa can move up the value chain and increase the incomes of its people while ensuring that less wealth is exported abroad.Trade between COMESA countries and China has also been growing by between 50 percent and 100 percent depending on the country, but on average by more than 50 percent annually and by the end of 2008 China-Africa trade was approaching the 100 billion U.S. dollars, according to Ngwenya.Ngwenya said the COMESA Customs Union presented immense opportunities for the Asian giant to deepen and consolidate economic cooperation with member states, most of whom it had strong bilateral, economic and political ties with. BEIJING, June 29 (Xinhua) -- The quake zone of Yushu in northwest China has received donations valued at over 8.5 billion yuan (about 1.25 billion U.S. dollars) as of Monday, with about 90 percent being in cash and the remaining in relief materials, said the civil affairs ministry.The ministry said in a statement that it received 2.407 billion yuan while the Qinghai provincial government of the quake zone received nearly 2 billion yuan in donations, with the Red Cross Society of China and the China Charity Federation each raising about 2 billion yuan.About ten percent of the total donations had been allocated to quake relief work along with reconstruction and restoration, the statement said.Yushu was hit by a 7.1-magnitude quake on April 14, with more than 2,200 people being killed and thousands of homes flattened.Vice Premier Hui Liangyu said on June 20 that the government would soon implement a reconstruction plan for the area, which sets a goal to accomplish major reconstruction tasks within three years.
