SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As San Diego County's back country communities brace for the prospect of losing power, political leaders are starting to take aim at the idea of pulling the plug on them.San Diego Gas and Electric has notified upwards of 30,000 customers that it could cut their power Thursday if it deems necessary to prevent a wildfire. At a news conference in San Diego Wednesday, Gov. Gavin Newsom praised SDG&E as a leader in wildfire prevention, but expressed frustration at the situation. He directed most of his anger toward Pacific Gas and Electric, which has cut off power to hundreds of thousands of customers in Northern California to prevent its equipment from starting wildfires. She said the utility is in communication with fire departments and has crews and arborists deployed across the county. "The population here in San Diego really need to be mindful that this is about their safety at the end of the day," Griffin said. SDG&E began the practice of cutting power in 2013. That's a big change from the 2007 wildfires, which investigators say happened as a result of SDG&E equipment. Many inland residents chose to spend the day on the coast to escape the blistering heat.They say home is where the heart is. But for Peggy Dudenhoeffer, home is where the heat is. The Fallbrook resident drove 50 miles south Saturday, to enjoy the day in Bankers Hill, where it was about 15 degrees cooler."We feel like we're on vacation!" she said. "I like it better out here. We're lucky to be in San Diego to be able to sit outdoors in the summertime."She and her friend were at Barrio Star restaurant, which moved its operations all outdoors because of COVID-19 restrictions. But the restaurant was not going to let the heatwave turn customers away. They installed misters onto their rooftop overflow area."Right now, with this weather, it couldn't be better," Barrio Star General Manager, Michael Simpson, said. "Some nice mist, some nice picnic tables, and some nice margaritas!"Some preferred being closer to natural water. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cal Trans closed down a section of southbound I-5 Thursday night.The closer started at 9:30 p.m. from the I-805 split to La Jolla Village Drive.The closure is expected to last until 5 a.m. Friday.Crews shut down the section of freeway due to necessary work on the construction of a trolley overpass over the interstate. Teams needed to bring heavy equipment onto the freeway to pour concrete onto the structure.Overnight and early morning commuters that take I-5 SB is being rerouted to I-805 SB and will need to use Highway 52 or I-8 to cut over.Crews say they will need to do follow up work within on the overpass in the next few weeks, so drivers should expect the same closure again. 716

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities are resuming their search Thursday morning for actress Naya Rivera who disappeared while boating on Lake Piru with her young son.The Ventura County Sheriff's Department tweeted that Rivera may have drowned. Later Thursday, authorities began a recovery effort, saying they believed Rivera had drowned.The 33-year-old actress rented a boat at the lake with her 4-year-old son Wednesday afternoon, authorities told media. Staff at the lake found the overdue rental with her child on board but could not find Rivera.Ventura County Sheriff’s Department Cpt. Eric Buschow told the Los Angeles Times that the boy and Rivera got out of the boat for a swim but she did not follow him back onto the boat. The boy was found sleeping on the boat alone by other boaters in the lake, Buschow said.Buschow said Rivera's son is safe with family members.Rivera, from Santa Clarita, earned stardom after her breakthrough role as cheerleader Santana Lopez on the television musical "Glee." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As a Hillcrest man showered in his apartment, an intruder was helping himself to a "priceless" pendant.The surveillance video that Ramon Castillo has seen countless times remains hard to watch."Scary and very disturbing," said Castillo.In late June on a Monday morning just before 9, Castillo was showering in his apartment on 3rd Avenue. What he didn't know know: he wasn't alone. When Castillo got out of the shower after 20 minutes, the screen door which had been locked was completely open. Surveillance video revealed why. In it, a man pauses at the door and somehow gets past the screen door, before quietly raiding the apartment. Among the items stolen were speakers and a safe from a bedroom closet. Inside the safe: cash, personal documents and jewelry, including a silver pendant containing the ashes of her mother. She passed away in 2015 from an accidental drug overdose."I can't replace that. It's the last thing of my mom and now I don't have anything," said Castillo.The thief who snatched it was in and out in about five minutes. He was seen driving off in a sedan. Castillo say the burglar had to have heard the shower running and went in anyways."He didn't think twice about it.
