Carlsbad (KGTV): Voters in Carlsbad could put women in charge of the local government, as female candidates overwhelmingly outnumber male candidates in the races for Mayor and City Council.Right now, there is just one woman on the five-seat council, which includes the Mayor. The lone female, Cori Schumacher, is currently running for mayor against incumbent Matt Hall.Meanwhile, Council-members Mark Packard and Michael Schumacher are not seeking reelection.Six candidates have come forward to fill their spots, five of which are women. In District One, Linda Breen, Tracy Carmichael, Barbara Hamilton, and David McGee are running. And, even if Schumacher loses, she'll still keep her current position on the Council."I think it's about time," says Loann Simon from the League of Women Voters in North County.Simon believes the rise of the women's movement in the last few years has spurred more women to come forward and get more involved in local politics."Women are becoming braver," she says. "I think it’s something that’s evolving, but after 2016, it’s kind of flipped a switch." A "pink wave" would be rare in Carlsbad. According to the Coast News, only 11 women have been elected to the City Council in the last 66 years.Simon says more female candidates means more of a focus on women's issues, like family, health and open space."It brings their voice to the table. It’s not enough to just shout about what you want. CAPE LOOKOUT, N.C. (AP) — The National Park Service says scientists are trying to determine the cause of death of an endangered whale calf that was found stranded on a beach on North Carolina’s Outer Banks.The young whale is considered to be “one of the rarest marine mammals” on earth, according to NPS.Biologists performed a necropsy on the North Atlantic right whale calf and took DNA samples Saturday.NPS at Cape Lookout National Seashore posted news of the whale’s death on its Facebook page.Right whales are critically endangered. The park service says only about 360 of the animals are still alive and about five or six calves are born each year. 661

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - A burglary victim is making a plea for the return of a priceless family heirloom after thieves forced open her front door and raided her Carlsbad home. Joanna Bradford returned home last Thursday and saw her front door open and damaged. "My heart started beating, immediately nervous and called police," said Bradford.Bradford eventually discovered a ransacked bathroom and bedroom. A new iPad and some jewelry had been stolen, including a gold-and-silver Omega watch belonging to her father, who passed away in 2013. He bought it in the 70s and wore it to work every day."I would put it on, look down, and see my dad. He was with me whenever I was wearing it," said Bradford.Bradford's Ring doorbell camera revealed clues about who made that watch vanish.Just before 10:30 a.m., a man wearing a blue shirt and sunglasses rings the doorbell with his knuckle. He then leaves and comes back with a backpack. That's when the motion-activated camera stops.In the next video, that man and another man are seen emerging from the home with backpacks, before getting into a vehicle, possibly a light-colored GMC Acadia SUV, and driving off. (KGTV) - A Carlsbad high school teacher accused of "inappropriate conduct" is denying the allegations that has forced him out of the classroom for months.About two months ago, senior Rafa Fabito said his film teacher at La Costa Canyon High School, Speed Farris, was a no-show."I thought he was just absent," said Fabito.But that absence continued without an explanation -- until now. An email was sent home to parents earlier this week confirming Harris is currently assigned to the San Dieguito Union High School District's Administrative Office amid an investigation into allegations of "inappropriate conduct toward former students." Across the La Costa Canyon campus, there was a sense of disbelief."This doesn't jive with what his typical personality is like. I wouldn't expect this from him," said Fabito.Early this school year, student Mary Harris took a literature class taught by Farris."He liked to joke around but never made anyone feel uncomfortable. Just a happy, fine guy," said Harris.Some parents told 10News they were upset it took months for the school district to inform them. As for the teacher at the center of the probe, he agreed to talk to 10News. By phone, Farris told 10News he couldn't say much, but did maintain his innocence. "These allegations are false. They're unwarranted. I've cooperated with the district investigation as much as possible. This whole process is ruining my life and my career," said Farris. 10News reached out to the San Dieguito Union High School District to find out why it took several months to inform parents, and is waiting to hear back.
