SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A sailboat and power boat collided near the Coronado Bridge Sunday afternoon, injuring four people, according to San Diego Harbor Police.A good Samaritan drove by and noticed people floating in life jackets as their boat took on water. He picked up nine people and ferried them to Pepper Park. "It's just what you do you're a boater, it's what you're supposed to do, you help out on the water, people have helped us and we've helped other people," Kary Brownlee said.The damaged powerboat, a Bayliner, was towed back to the Pepper Park launch ramp where four passengers were evaluated for minor injuries. No one was taken to the hospital.The sailboat cruised back to Coronado on its own power."All it takes is a split second, when the captain is not paying attention that could cause a collision," boat safety advocate Amos Zolna said. He explained sail boats generally have the right of way, as they are harder to maneuver, compared to a power boat. Zolna said it's hard to navigate near the bridge, due to the large pillars that create blind spots.Harbor Police reported the 911 call at 1:28 p.m. They are investigating the cause of the crash and if any alcohol was involved. 1204

According to the San Diego Police Department, Jose Corona went missing from the Jamacha-Lomita neighborhood at some point during the day Saturday, but was located Sunday. Authorities were concerned because they say Corona suffers from dementia and a traumatic brain injury. 376

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego family wants to warn other about daytime burglars who may be posing as door-to-door salespeople.The Alvarado family just moved to a home in Allied Gardens. It is a safe neighborhood, but they noticed there are a lot of solicitors.Tuesday afternoon they were burglarized by a couple of young men wearing matching outfits.“I left the house for 25 minutes to pick up my daughters from school," Vanessa Alvarado said. "When I was coming down the street I noticed two young men walking quickly down the street, from my driveway, carrying both my guitars."Her daughters were also in the car as they drove up to their home, and burglars.“They looked up and saw me. They knew who I was,” Alvarado said. "They knew my car and they just sped down the street, made a sharp right turn."One of her daughters noticed the young men’s matching clothes.“I think they looked like salesmen. I noticed one of the had a binder in his hands with several things on top, which turned out to be my personal belongings,” Alvarado said.The home was locked at the time of the burglary.The thieves went into the backyard and broke in through a bedroom window, which was open a few inches but had a stopper device on it aimed to prevent anyone from opening the window further.Regardless, the thieves pried off the screen, and pushed the window open.The men made off with numerous items, including guitars, Kindles and jewelry. They left no fingerprints.“I went from trying to be strong for my daughters to realizing my wedding rings were gone and at that point, my heart just shattered into a million pieces,” Alvarado said.Now, the family is getting security cameras and they have dowels in the windows so they can't be opened.  1744

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A medical helicopter transporting a heart from Grossmont Hospital for transplant crashed on the helipad of a Los Angeles-area hospital on Friday.The AgustaWestland A109 medical helicopter flipped onto its side after experiencing a hard landing on the roof of Keck Hospital of USC at about 3:15 p.m., according to a statement from the hospital. Three people on board, the pilot and two medical personnel, escaped without major injuries. Nobody on the ground or in the hospital was injured, the hospital and FAA said. Patient care at the hospital was not interrupted.The helicopter was carrying a heart from Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa, according to helicopter service provider Helinet. The hospital said in a statement that the organ was safely delivered to the intended patient in time for surgery.“We are fully cooperating with the NTSB and FAA on their investigations,” said Helinet COO and President Sean M. Cross. “Our company prides itself on professional operation and maintenance of aircraft as core values - the safety of our customers and pilots is always our top priority. We are happy that at this time there appear to have been no serious injuries.”The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.Helinet says it completed more than 1,300 helicopter air ambulance missions in 2019. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new report says San Diego Unified School District is losing nearly million a year due to the exploding number of charter schools.School districts receive funding per student. The report by the organization, In the Public Interest, found SDUSD loses nearly ,913 a year per charter school student, largely due to costs that cannot be reduced when a student goes to a charter school. SDUSD is the second-largest district in California.There are about 120 charter schools in San Diego County. Roughly 50 of those schools are in the SDUSD. Elva Barajas’ son attends a local charter school.“I liked what they were offering for the students. There were smaller classrooms… less than 25 kids in the classroom. It was more individualized for the students,” Barajas said.Miriam Rodriguez’s daughters go to traditional schools within SDUSD.“At the end of the day, the schools are in my community,” Rodriguez said.The report, called "Breaking Point: The Cost of Charter Schools to Public School District," analyzed three California school districts including San Diego.Superintendent Cindy Marten and SDUSD trustee Richard Barrera argued that local districts need more control over school charter decisions. Barrera said district leaders need to ask critical questions, including fiscal impact. Currently, he said they are not allowed to do so.“What is it bringing to the table, what is it adding to the mix of schools… but also, what is it taking away?” Barrera said.Michelle Anderson, Regional Manager for the California Charter Schools Association, said districts already have enough oversight. “This is really a misrepresentation of issues that came through from a report that was paid for by special interests. Charter schools are really not the bad guys in this issue,” Anderson said.Both sides agree that education funding goes beyond this particular issue, although they differ in the impact of charter schools.
