SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-  Tens of thousands of people in San Diego are on a waiting list for rental assistance.According to the San Diego Housing Commission, the Section 8 voucher program is currently helping about 15,000 families.With the need so great, Team 10 wanted to know if everyone getting help qualifies for a voucher.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Region needs 143,000 affordable homesUsing information from the San Diego Housing Commission, 10News compared 2017 data on family size and income limits to the maximum annual income limits allowed at the time. The comparison showed more than 20 cases where income was more than what was allowed at the time.Representatives with the housing commission said it is possible for people to be above the limit.  "We also have less than a quarter of one percent of our families who may exceed the 80 percent gross income, and that's a natural progression,” said Azucena Valladolid, Senior Vice President, Rental Assistance and Workforce Development. “Over the course of the time on our program, they may have increased their earnings.”RELATED: San Diego City Council passes affordable housing ordinanceValladolid explained that federal regulations require the San Diego Housing Commission to provide rental assistance to those families for an additional six months before they transition them off of the program.She said someone working for the housing commission determines whether or not someone qualifies for the voucher program. (KGTV) - A San Diego-based rancher says their business has grown as the corporate meat industry struggles.In the past months, Doug Lindamood, of SonRise Ranch, says they've seen their ranch experience a surge in business.“Surprisingly, in an odd set of circumstances, we’ve had a ranch that’s been very successful during these times,” he said. He said their business has easily tripled since the beginning of the pandemic. They’ve seen more people seeking food safety, so they’re buying meat in bulk. The ranch typically sells about 10-12 half or full cows a year, but that’s recently increased to 10-12 a week. This boost comes as the industrial meat industry is hurting across the country. Lindamood said a handful of companies produce a majority of the meat in the U.S. and the big players have been hit with sick employees, causing closures and less supply. “Highly consolidated plants being affected by basically a pandemic which then has the potential to shut down a vast portion of our production,” he said. Lindamood adds this has been a ticking time bomb that needs to be addressed. “For every one of those small plants that shut down over the last 20 or 30 years, we lost a small piece of our soul with respect to connecting to our consumers,” Lindamood said. “We need not one or 10 of me — which there are maybe five or six of us in the Southern California region. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The family of Crystal Odom filled a San Diego courtroom Monday morning to hear a judge sentence the man convicted of killing Odom in a drive-by shooting in 1995. The judge sentenced Aswad Walker to 15 years to life for Odom's murder, plus three years for gang ties. He was convicted of second-degree murder back in February for Odom's death. Two previous trials had ended in hung juries. Odom's parents spoke before the sentencing. Her mother called Walker a coward and told him he would get what he deserved in prison. When Odom's father, James Odom, spoke, the family became very emotional, tears and sobs could be heard throughout the courtroom. Odom said a burden was lifted off his shoulders and that the sentencing marked an end to a long ordeal. At the time of the shooting, Crystal was with her then boyfriend and her 10-month-old daughter. Her daughter and boyfriend were unhurt. 959

SAN DIEGO, California — One person died and two others were injured, and Coast Guard crews rescued 17 others after a mega yacht collided with a fishing vessel off the coast of Imperial Beach on Friday night. The 332-foot yacht, Attessa IV, crashed into the 65-foot sportfisher vessel, Prowler, just before 8 p.m. about nine miles off the shore of Imperial Beach, according to the Coast Guard.The collision caused extensive damage to the right side of the Prowler.One man was airlifted to UCSD Hillcrest and died at the hospital, the Coast Guard confirmed. Two others were injured in the accident.Coast Guard crews transferred 17 passengers from the damaged fishing boat back to San Diego. The Prowler's 10 remaining passengers were transferred onto the Attessa IV, set to return to San Diego.The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the accident. 884
