The Scottish Parliament voted on Tuesday to unanimously approve a bill that would provide free feminine hygiene products to the public. The bill says products that are disposable, such as tampons and wipes, will be available to the public for free.The legislation, titled SP Bill 45A, spells out that local authorities ensure “period products” be obtainable free of charge to all persons who need them; education providers make period products obtainable for free for students; and that period products be available for free in public buildings.The legislation points out that Scotland is the first nation in the world to implement such a law, so it is unknown what the cost might be to the government.The Scottish government estimates there are nearly 1.6 million women of menstruation age in Scotland.“Thank you to everyone who has campaigned for period dignity and to my MSP colleagues for backing the Bill tonight. The Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington is welcoming its newest member — a baby Lowland gorilla.On Sunday, 15-year-old Calaya gave birth to a son, Moke — "junior" or "little one" in Lingala, a language spoken in Central Africa.“The birth of this western lowland gorilla is very special and significant, not only to our Zoo family but also to this critically endangered species as a whole,” said Meredith Bastian, the National Zoo's curator of primates, according to the Smithsonian. “The primate team’s goal was to set Calaya up for success as best we could, given that she is a first-time mother. Doing so required great patience and dedication on the part of my team, and I am very proud of them and Calaya.”According to the zoo, Cayala has been adjusting well to motherhood and has learned how to care for Moke by watching other gorillas and through the help of staff. Zookeepers helped trained Cayala, in part, by showing her pictures of mother gorillas and presenting her with toys to cuddle and kiss.“This infant’s arrival triggers many emotions—joy, excitement, relief—and pride that all of our perseverance in preparing Calaya for motherhood has paid off,” said animal keeper Melba Brown. “We will provide support to her if need be, but I have every confidence that Calaya will be a great mom to Moke. The US Postal Service is asking for the biggest price jump on stamps in its history.Facing pressure from the Trump administration to address a revenue shortfall, the Postal Service on Wednesday proposed raising the price of 1-oz. letters from 50 cents to 55 cents, which would be a record nominal increase if approved. The price of each additional ounce would go down slightly.The request was made by the USPS' board of governors, which has been operating on an emergency basis?because of a lack of confirmed members. It will have to be approved by the Postal Regulatory Commission."The Governors believe these new rates will keep the Postal Service competitive while providing the agency with needed revenue," the USPS said in a press release. "The Postal Service has some of the lowest letter mail postage rates in the industrialized world and also continues to offer a great value in shipping."Rates for mailing services -- which includes catalogs and magazines as well as letters -- are pegged to consumer prices. Those have been rising faster this year, but still limited the price hike for that category to 2.5 percent.Prices for packages, however, can float with market rates. The USPS wants to boost Priority Mail prices by an average of 5.9%. A small flat-rate box that costs .20 to ship, for example, would next year cost .90.The steep price increases come at a time when the USPS' losses have been mounting, dragged down in part by a requirement that the quasi-public agency pre-fund the cost of retiree health benefits.As letters and advertising mailers have been replaced by e-mail and online ads, the USPS has been making less and less money. The skies over several US states and Ontario, Canada, lit up briefly on Wednesday as a presumed fireball streaked over the daytime sky.Despite the midday sun, the fireball was clearly visible in videos captured at the time of the event.According to the American Meteor Society, dozens of eyewitnesses reported seeing the fireball shortly after 12 p.m. ET. The reports were clustered around Lake Ontario, but the organization received reports from Michigan, Ohio, and even as far away as Maryland and Virginia.An eyewitness in Ohio reported to the American Meteor Society, “It was like a ball of fire with a tail...surreal to see in the daytime.”Another eyewitness in Ontario said, “Astonishing, amazing, still get goosebumps talking about it.”What caused the bright flash hasn’t been confirmed, but is presumed to be a meteor.
