SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While the bulk of rainfall has moved out of San Diego County for the week, high winds and surf while persist through the weekend.A large west-northwest swell will bring a high surf advisory to San Diego County through Saturday until 8 p.m., with surf reaching 6 to 10 feet along the county's southern coastline. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While San Diego has several desirable neighborhoods, Solana Beach may take the cake.That's according to a recent survey by financial website 24/7 Wall St., which named the coastal city one of the best places to live in America. Solana Beach ranked seventh on the list of 50 cities, based on its walkability, commute times, and attractions."Located less than 30 minutes from downtown San Diego, area residents have access to jobs and entertainment located in the major urban area," the website wrote. "The city is also home to one of only three train stations in San Diego County, providing commuters more options. For recreation, the city boasts 1.7 miles of beach, and a higher than average per capita concentration of restaurants, gyms, museums, and movie theaters."The website used data affordability, economy, quality of life, and community to develop its best cities list. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When school started last week at Dailard Elementary in San Carlos, the father of a second grade student noticed several large spiders and egg sacks in the area where kids hang their backpacks. He took several photos documenting the issue. When he reached out to 10News about a week later, he said he had already spoken to a teacher, custodian, and the principal about the issue but was told a work order would need to be put in to get pest control to the school. The same parent said the spiders appeared to be brown widows, which are venomous and a bite from one requires medical attention. A San Diego Unified School District spokesperson confirmed that a pest control team was sent to the school Thursday to get rid of the spiders and eggs. They also confirmed that the spiders were indeed brown widows, very common in the San Diego area. Despite the concerns, there were no reports of any children ever being bitten. 952

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers over the weekend seized 314 pounds of narcotics and captured 14 fugitives.Officers intercepted 181 pounds of methamphetamine, 55 pounds of cocaine, 11 pounds of heroin, 31 pounds of fentanyl and 36 pounds of marijuana.RELATED: U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seize 1,800 pounds of drugs worth .2 millionIt total, officials say the drugs are worth more than .4 million. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When a series of suspicious fires pop up and arson is suspected, law enforcement officials across California have a handy tool that could help track down or rule out potential suspects.“In California there’s a criminal arson registry put on by the California Department of Justice,” said San Diego Police Sgt. Rick Pechin with the Metro Arson Strike Team. “What that registry does is keep track of all arson registrants in the state of California.”The registry is similar to the Megan’s Law database, but it is not available for the public to access. “It’s a law enforcement computer database only,” said Pechin.RELATED: Video shows arsonist suspected of setting Ocean Beach, Point Loma firesOnce someone is convicted of the crime of arson, they must add their name and address to the registry 14 days after they get out of jail or prison. Offenders can even land themselves on the list even if they slip up just once, like burning a pile of an ex's clothing.“Sometimes it was a onetime mistake they may have made in the heat of the moment and it got them on the list for the rest of their lives,” said Pechin.Pechin and his team of detectives with San Diego’s Metro Arson Strike Team recently used the arson registry after a number of fires erupted across Ocean Beach and Point Loma in September.In the specific case, surveillance video revealed who investigators believed was starting the fires.RELATED: Arson teams investigating five suspicious fires in OB and Point LomaWith the description of the possible suspect, a fairly tall, white man with a thin build, MAST investigators went through the arson registry searching for people known to re-offend in the area.His description helped rule out a number of potential suspects.“It’s just as important as a tool used to exclude someone as it is to include them as a possible suspect,” said Mechin.There are random compliance checks for offenders on the list.“The compliance checks are basically just to make sure they still live in the same location that they gave the local police department when they moved in that area,” said Mechin.If the offender has moved, they must notify local law enforcement of their address change.RELATED: Suspect arrested in Carlsbad dealership arson, charged with insurance fraudPechin said officers have had some problems keeping up with chronic offenders.“If we find out that they are out of compliance we will try to track them down and they can be arrested,” he said.Although the registry helped rule out a number of known arsonists In the Point Loma and Ocean Beach suspicious fires case, a suspect was never arrested.Anyone with information is asked to call San Diego Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477 or the San Diego Metro Arson team at 619-236-6815. 2766
