One of the largest anti-smoking groups is now going after cigarette makers for their trash.The Truth Initiative released a new video in an effort to combat the littering of cigarette butts. It debuted nationally last week during the MTV Video Music Award.The organization is tying this latest campaign into their public petition to get more businesses and public places to go smoke-free.Cigarette butts are the most littered item on the planet, and it’s the most picked up item from beaches all over the world.They contain hundreds of chemicals that show up in wildlife and waterways. The butts are made with a type of plastic that can take a decade or more to decompose.Cigarette makers have tried cleaning up their act over the years, but so far, nothing has really made a dent.There is a startup company that claims to have a biodegradable cigarette filter, which breaks down in a matter of days. The company says they are in talks with cigarette makers and are currently looking for a partner to start manufacturing the green filters. 1046

One of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School's most visible student activists will postpone his first year of college to devote time to political causes.David Hogg has been accepted at the University of California, Irvine, "But he will not be going to college this year because he's decided to take a year off and work on the midterm elections," his mother, Rebecca Boldrick, told CNN Monday.She said her son hopes to register and educate new voters and to "get people to vote."Hogg, 17, is a senior at the Parkland, Florida, school where 17 people were fatally shot in February. OMAHA, Neb. — A principal at a Nebraska elementary school has been placed on administrative leave after she released a memo discouraging teachers from putting up Christmas-themed decorations in their classrooms.Jennifer Sinclair of Manchester Elementary in Elkhorn, Nebraska, sent the memo teachers encouraging them to put up non-denominational winter decorations in the public school as opposed to Christmas-themed decorations."Red and green items," "candy canes" and "reindeers" were deemed unacceptable holiday decorations were specifically mentioned in the memo.The Elkhorn School District released its own statement saying the principal's memo did not reflect school policy.The principal also sent an apology letter, in which she stated that she was wrong to set such rules about classroom decorations.Manchester Elementary parents now stand divided on the issue."I feel that something was wrong with what she was doing. she was kinda enforcing or making the rest of her school think the way she did," said Vicki Dryden, a grandmother of a Manchester student.A mother of two Manchester students said she thinks the principal being put on administrative leave has blown the situation way out of proportion, especially since the principal has since sent an apology letter."I just don't think we could ask for a better principal," she said. 1355

Nostalgia lovers can kindly rewind to a time when Blockbuster Video reigned supreme.On Tuesday, the once defunct Blockbuster Video Twitter account came out of a six-year hibernation to announce that the last remaining Blockbuster in Oregon can be rented through Airbnb. The store will be split into three units, with each one selling for per night, but the catch is it’s only open to residents of Deschutes County, Oregon, where the final Blockbuster Video remains.Blockbuster will provide snacks, soft drinks and pizza with the units. The units will also have access to a huge collection of Blockbuster’s stock.The units are available for up to four people, but can only be rented for one night per family.Following three nights of stays, the Oregon Blockbuster will allow visitors to see the units during regular business hours for a limited time.The Bend, Oregon, Blockbuster became the final location open of the mega video rental chain in 2018 after a pair of Alaska locations closed.
