SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 32-year-old man is expected to survive a stab wound to the abdomen after being attacked by a suspect who rode up on a bicycle and assaulted him on a bridge in the Hillcrest community of San Diego, police said.The victim was with friends on a bridge in the 3900 block of Vermont Street when the bicyclist rode up about 9 p.m. Saturday and stabbed him once in the abdomen, said Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.The suspect rode away southbound on the bridge. Paramedics rushed the 32-year-old man to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.No description of the suspect was available. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A grand jury indictment charging three San Diegans with conspiracy to commit fraud, grand theft, forgery and identity theft was unsealed Thursday, alleging the defendants defrauded more than 100 local Navy service members out of millions by selling the service members unnecessary life insurance policies.Paul Flanagan, 54; Ranjit Kalsi, 52; and Gregory Martin II, 49, are accused of selling 4,700 life insurance policies and annuity contracts to service members who already had life insurance through the Navy, otherwise known as Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance.Prosecutors allege the defendants -- through their company, Go Navy Tax Service -- misrepresented what services the company was providing when they sold policies to the service members. Bank accounts were opened in the service members' names to make automatic payments toward the policies' premiums, though the victims believed they were signing up for a retirement savings account or other services, rather than life insurance policies.Flanagan, the company's owner, pleaded not guilty to nearly 70 felony counts at the downtown San Diego courthouse Thursday afternoon. Kalsi and Martin, who allegedly did the bulk of the sales out of the company's office -- a trailer located near the San Diego Naval Base on 32nd Street -- were arraigned Wednesday afternoon.The defendants face more than 20 years in prison if convicted of all counts, according to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office. The federal convictions reached Thursday-- in a case investigated by the Oceanside Police Department -- trigger mandatory minimum sentences of 15 and ten years, respectively, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.According to evidence presented at trial, Smallwood-Jackson began communicating with the girl using the Spotafriend social media application. He admitted during chats with the victim -- whose profile listed her true age of 14 -- that he was 21 years old and didn't care that she was a minor.Using the internet, Smallwood-Jackson discussed sexual acts he wanted to perform with the girl and convinced her to produce and send him sexually explicit pictures and provide her address, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Mandy Griffith.The girl repeatedly told Smallwood-Jackson that she was not sure she wanted to meet with him, but he told her to take a "leap of faith." The defendant then traveled to her home, convinced her to come outside, and had sex with her, according to prosecutors.In texts afterward, Smallwood-Jackson apologized for hurting the minor victim.
