SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — North County residents have banded together to help a woman who was living in her van with hundreds of pet rats and nowhere to turn.Locals were first alerted to the woman's situation outside a Del Mar convenience store, where she works. Carla was recently living in her van with two pet rats after becoming homeless, neighbor Kimberly Jackson told 10News reporter Rachel Bianco. The two rats had babies and the situation grew out of hand. The rodents eventually totaled more than 300. The animals chewed through the wiring of the van, rendering it inoperable."Everywhere, there was not one place in the van where they had not gotten into, the wiring, the engine, they came and went from the engine area," San Diego Humane Society officer Danee Cook said. "She was extremely helpful during the entire process as well. She did love her pets, she just let it get out of hand and she became overwhelmed."Video of the rats scurrying across the van's dashboard surfaced on NextDoor, catching the attention of neighbors like Jackson. "She said, "are you here to ridicule me, like everybody else," Jackson told 10News. "I saw what was going on in there, and said, 'how can we help you?' There were like 300 rats in that van." That's when Jackson and other neighbors stepped in, helping Carla tow her van from the parking lot. The San Diego Humane Society then removed the rats, which are healthy and now up for adoption.The acts of kindness have gone even further to help Carla. Neighbors set up a GoFundMe account that has raised nearly ,000 for Carla. Another neighbor donated a car. They're also helping connect her to homelessness resources and housing."She's just a gentle, gentle person, nobody knew she was homeless," Jackson said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — PETA is taking aim at SeaWorld once again, this time hoping to put a stop to the parks' dolphin shows.Officials held a press conference Wednesday to call out the park for what they called "dangerous," "circus-style" dolphins shows. The group argues trainers use dolphins "as surfboards" and have caused "open wounds and extensive scarring" on the animals."SeaWorld ceded to public pressure and said that it would phase out its circus-style orca shows, but dozens of other dolphins are still packed into shallow tanks, forcibly bred, and used as surfboards and launch pads in its shows," Heather Rally, a PETA Foundation veterinarian, said. "PETA is calling on SeaWorld to end these demeaning tricks and stop standing on dolphins' backs and faces."Rally, "Blackfish" director Gabriela Cowperthwaite, and behavioral biologist Dr. Toni Frohoff presented a report Wednesday in regards to their observations at the parks. The three argued that the shows, which are performed at all three of SeaWorld's parks, risk damage to dolphins' lower jaws. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police have arrested the man they say tried to sexually assault a woman at gunpoint inside a restroom at the Hilton in Old Town Tuesday.According to police, Jason Lee Jones, 31, was arrested and booked into jail for one count of assault with intent to commit a sexual offense.Jones was also arrested for an active parole warrant. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Officials with Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar announced Saturday that a second Marine has tested positive for coronavirus.Capt. Matthew Gregory told 10News that the patient is currently being isolated and receiving medical support aboard the base."The air station is currently conducting a thorough contact investigation to determine who may have had contact with the Marine and notify them of the situation," officials said.The identity of the Marine is being withheld due to privacy restrictions, but Gregory said the Marine resides on base and was not on leave."The Marine self-reported to the Miramar medical clinic with symptoms and was ultimately transferred to Naval Medical Center San Diego for testing," said Gregory.The news comes after it was reported Thursday that a Marine stationed at MCAS Miramar had tested presumptive positive for coronavirus after returning from leave in Washington state. The patient was visiting family which is where officials believe he contracted the virus, officials on base familiar with the matter told 10News.Both cases are currently in isolation and being quarantined in an empty barracks that was designated to treat potential cases of Covid-19, according to Gregory. "Both are fine and doing well," said Gregory.MCAS Miramar is one of four bases outside of California used as quarantine sites for individuals returning from overseas, including U.S. citizens that were evacuated from Wuhan last month and passengers aboard the Grand Princess cruise ship that was brought to Oakland last week. The quarantined passengers are being treated by staff with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Neither of the two infected Marines had any contact with the cruise ship passengers, according to Gregory.Gregory noted that MCAS Miramar officials had taken measures earlier this week to prepare for potential cases. He said the base implemented similar practices used by the CDC to treat service personnel."We're using the same protocols," said Gregory.
