SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- As San Diego County awaits state guidance on how to move forward with reopening different sectors, a local church continues to defy public health orders by operating inside.Under the current public health order, religious services may continue outside with social distancing in place.Awaken Church was sent a cease and desist letter from the county’s public health officer, Dr. Wilma Wooten, for operating inside in July.A month later, the church is defying the health order again by resuming indoor operations on Sunday, August 23, the church’s 15th anniversary. Services and locations are posted on the church's website. A video on the church’s website shows pastors Jurgen and Leanne Matthesius speaking about why they have decided to reopen. The two said it was time to reopen and that “fighting for our religious freedoms and pushing back against government overreach is not only worth the cost; it’s essential.”In the video, the pastors say that the governor and county officials continue to keep churches under strict regulations, which prevents them from meeting the needs of their congregation.“Sadly, we’ve had five people connected to our church that have lost their lives, not from the virus but because of the virus. This was due to many factors, including suicide, drug overdose, and severe neglect from a hospital who was primarily focused on their COVID patients,” said Leanna Matthesius in the video.While county supervisor Nathan Fletcher acknowledged the importance of religious freedom and constitutional rights, he spoke of his frustrations with the church at a county COVID-19 press conference Monday. “It is very frustrating to see an entity that has an avenue to gather that is allowable, that is acceptable, that is much safer, choose to openly defy that in order to expose the members of their congregation to a very dangerous situation,” said Fletcher. “Just gather outdoors, physically distance, and wear a face covering.”Under the county’s public health order, houses of worship can continue to operate if “outdoor services and cultural ceremonial activities may be conducted provided all persons practice social distancing.”A county spokesperson tells ABC 10News that the church isn’t facing additional action from the county as of right now.ABC 10News reached out to Awaken Church for further comment but did not hear back. 2380

San Diego Unified School Board president and math teacher Kevin Beiser will introduce a resolution at Tuesday night's meeting demanding action from state and federal lawmakers pass stricter gun control laws."It's an opportunity for us parents students and teachers to speak in unison and call on our elected officials to do what we know is right and implement reasonable gun reform now, said Beiser ahead of the meeting. The board did something similar after the Sandy Hook school shooting back in 2012 but Beiser thinks it's worth stating again. And although it's not included in the resolution, Beiser expects the issue of arming teachers to come up at the meeting.Last week President Trump said he favored arming teachers to protect students. 763

San Diego (KGTV)- There are no regrets for a San Diego man who risked his life when he stumbled on a wreck in the middle of last week's rainstorm. "If you ask me, I probably would have done it again," says Victor Ruvalcava. On a rainy Wednesday morning, Dec. 4th, Ruvalcava says he saw a car flip over on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley. The young driver was ejected from the car. "I park behind his car, get out to see if he's ok, I asked him hey is there anyone else in the car. He didn't respond," says Ruvalcava. "I look towards the car, and that's when I get hit by the SUV."He was thrown about 100 feet after that SUV slammed into him. Ruvalcava spent days in the hospital with several injuries, which include a collapsed lung, broken ribs, and leg. While in the hospital, he says the young man he stopped to help, and his family came to visit him. He says they were "extremely thankful." CHP says for safety reasons, they don't recommend drivers stopping to help crash victims on a busy freeway. They should call 911. But Ruvalcava says he'd do it all over again. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - The San Diego Public Library is on the road to reopening. Tuesday, eleven locations have reopened, but only for people who placed holds prior to the closure that started in March. Those items can now be picked up with a contact-free system where the person calls when they arrive at the location, then a librarian puts the books on a table outside for the person to pick up. Starting next week, people can put new holds on items. Director Misty Jones said they’ll reopen more after that depending on county orders and plans to keep books virus-free. The future of the libraries will depend on some unknown’s, including how the library can help the school system, what studies reveal about how long the virus can live on items and more. “We adapt to the way that people need the service from us and we’ll adapt and we’ll pivot and we’ll be able to offer that incredible customer service like we always have,” said Jones. The eleven locations currently open as of May 26 are Carmel Valley, College-Rolando, La Jolla/Riford, Logan Heights, Mira Mesa, Mission Hills-Hillcrest/Knox, Mission Valley, Point Loma/Hervey, Rancho Bernardo, San Ysidro and Valencia Park/Malcolm X. These locations are open 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. For Benjamin Prado, "Deportation" is always on his mind. "We see a policy of terror," Prado said. As a community advocate for 'American Friends Service Committee,' he connects migrants with various services. He has worked with those who were arrested at the Zion Market ICE Raid in February 2019."Whether people have documents or not, people have the right to work, and people have the right to produce and create a meaningful life for themselves," Prado said. Saturday, President Trump disagreed saying, "Everybody that came into the country illegally will be brought out of the country very legally."So even when the President announced that he would delay the planned nationwide ICE Raids initially scheduled to begin Sunday, Prado's work remains the same. "We are on a permanent campaign of informing families what their rights are," Prado said. "What their constitutional rights are, ensuring that they know that they don't have to speak to immigration law-enforcement, that they don't have to open the door, that they should demand to see any form of warrants that they have, whether it be judicial or administrative warrants that ICE produces."In a Tweet Saturday, Gavin Newsom agreed saying, "When we talk about knowing your rights, 'no abras la puerta.'
