SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County officials are once again sounding the alarm, asking San Diegans to follow all health guidelines to slow the spread of COVID-19.On Wednesday, local leaders held a press conference to discuss the county's latest numbers and their placement on the state's colored tier system. The county stayed in the red tier, but was dangerously close to slipping into the more restrictive purple tier. In fact, County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten said San Diego County was only two cases away from the purple tier."Yesterday we dodged a bullet. We could not have gotten any closer without tripping into the purple tier," County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said at Wednesday's press conference. "But we don't want to live or die on the tiers by how many tests we've done."The county's unadjusted case rate is 7.7, while the adjusted rate is 7.0. Officials said the county's testing efforts allowed for that adjusted number. The county's health equity metric also improved, going down from 5.7% to 5.5%; the metric looks at the most undeserved, impacted communities.On Wednesday, health officials reported 263 new COVID-19 infections and six additional deaths, raising the region's cumulative totals to 53,263 cases and 863 fatalities.Six new community outbreaks were also reported Wednesday, two in businesses, two in restaurants, one in a restaurant/bar setting and one in a healthcare setting. In the past seven days, 32 community outbreaks were confirmed, well above the trigger of seven or more in a week's time.A community outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households over the past 14 days.Wooten said the best way to keep cases down is to continue following all health guidelines in place, like wearing a mask, staying home if you're sick, social distancing and avoiding indoor gatherings. The county is also looking ahead to Election Day, urging San Diegans to vote via mail-in ballot, but also reassuring in-person voters that it will be safe to cast a ballot. County Registrar of Voters Michael Vu is asking all in-person voters to wear a mask and be patient on Election Day. Vu said all 4,500 election workers will undergo two days of training before the election so they can handle sanitization procedures and how to direct crowds. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego is celebrating 250 years of history in 2019 with special events planned to commemorate the anniversary. Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced efforts for the San Diego 250 initiative Tuesday at a news conference. The San Diego region has been Kumeyaay territory for thousands of years, but the San Diego we know today began on July 16, 1769, city officials said. “This year we mark a tremendous milestone – 250 years of history, culture and achievement,” Mayor Faulconer said. “San Diego is the place where California began, and we will reflect on our past, commemorate this moment in time and look forward to building a better future for all San Diegans in the next 250 years. I want to thank the many dedicated individuals and organizations that have come together to help celebrate this important anniversary and create opportunities to learn more about our history and heritage as a city and region.” A group of civic leaders, organizations, community volunteers has met biweekly to plan key events. Kumeyaay representatives have also contributed to the group’s discussions about an accurate historical representation of their history. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police are investigating after a man died in Southcrest Community Park late Friday night. Police were called to the scene after a passerby found a man with trauma and, possibly gunshot injuries to his upper body laying on the 1300 block of South 40th Street just after 10 p.m.San Diego Fire-Rescue was also called to the scene and began life-saving efforts, but police say the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say very little is known about the circumstances surrounding the man's death. The victim has been identified, but police haven't released his name at this time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County reported 284 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, 69 of those cases connected to San Diego State University.Thursday's reported cases bring the region's total to 41,608 cases.Since the fall semester started on Aug. 24, San Diego State has reported 509 confirmed COVID-19 cases and four probable cases. Greeters, or wellness ambassadors, are also on campus to remind students of COVID-19 policies.Violation of the policies can result in suspension or in extreme cases, expulsion.Thursday, the California State University system, which includes SDSU, announced that course would continue to be held mostly online in Spring 2021, with certain limited instances for in-person classes."We have learned from experience that announcing this decision now will allow faculty and staff to continue or start professional development to be even more effective in the virtual space. We also know that deciding now will allow our students and their families time to plan appropriately. This decision is the only responsible one available to us at this time," says CSU Chancellor Timothy White. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police are reminding families who may care for an at-risk loved one to have a plan if they become lost.Officers said Saturday that a woman named "Lupe" disappeared from her home recently and was lost before a neighbor who noticed her called police.SDPD Southern Division officer McClain responded to the call and stayed with Lupe as other officers searched the area to try and get her back home, according to police. An officer eventually found a residence with an open door, which was Lupe's home.Instead of transporting her back home in a police vehicle, and possibly confusing or scaring the woman, SDPD said McClain, "figured it was time to get his steps in and walked Lupe back to her residence." There, she was reunited with her family.SDPD said the incident highlighted the need for families to make sure loved ones with medical or mental issues have an ID bracelet with their basic information, address, and emergency contact if they become lost.The Alzheimer's Association says families can prevent a loved one from wandering away from home by identifying times they are likely to wander and plan activities, ensure basic meets are met, use devices to signal when a door or window opens, and regularly supervise them. The group says families can plan for the possibility of someone wandering away from home by asking neighbors to call if they see the person alone, know where a person could likely go to if they leave the home alone, and familiarize themselves with the neighborhood and any possible hazards there may be. 1568
