CLEVELAND — A book club geared towards senior citizens is helping older Ohioans feel less alone during the coronavirus pandemic.Meet Ann Kuula. Like so many seniors this year, the coronavirus pandemic has left Kuula isolated — separated from family and friends through necessity.Her birthday celebration consisted of her kids singing to her in her front yard.“My oldest son Matt made his first cake and wrote ‘Sweet 16’ because, at age 79, 7 and 9 is sixteen,” Kuula said.So when Kuula got the chance to take part in a pilot program book club for seniors, she couldn’t wait.“When I got the book, I couldn’t put it down,” she said. “Keeping our mind busy!”That could be crucial for older Americans amid the pandemic. According to a Washington Post report, doctors have reported increased falls, pulmonary infections, depression and sudden frailty in patients who had been stable for years.“Human connection is a huge piece of what keeps us healthy,” said Ann Smith, executive director of Books @ Work.Books @ Work isn't a typical book club.— they team up with professors who help facilitate the discussion, in this case, one from Kent State University. The idea came from the Literacy Cooperative, a Cleveland-based nonprofit.They got in touch with seniors who wanted to take part through the Cleveland Department of Aging.“But because most of the folks who participated in this program don’t have internet access, don’t have computers, we actually did this one by phone,” Smith said.Group leaders hooked up a specific phone line that the seniors could call in to — and then, they let them talk. Their first book? "The Only Woman in the Room" by Heather Terrell— a historical novel about a brilliant female scientist only remembered for her beauty despite her many contributions to modern society.“The fact that people were able to connect even over the phone, just as disembodied voices and yet they still opened up tremendously,” Smith said. “Some of them shared very personal experiences.”Even from miles away, through the most basic of technology, books can bring people together.“Meeting these people over the phone was so enriching,” Kuula said. “And that’s what older people need — socialization, reminiscing, and enrichment.”Right now, the program is looking for funding to support more rounds of participants since the books were sent to the seniors free of charge.This story was originally published by Homa Bash on WEWS in Cleveland. 2451

Containers of fruits being sold at Walmart in nine states were recalled due to a listeria risk.On Saturday, the Food and Drug Administration posted on its website that Country Fresh expanded its voluntary recall, which they issued on Friday, to include various containers of Freshness Guaranteed-brand cut or sliced apples, grapes, mangos, pineapples, and cantaloupe distributed by Walmart.In a recall notice published on the FDA's website, Country Fresh said the FDA's voluntary recall came after a recent inspection."The recall is a precautionary measure due to possible health risk from Listeria monocytogenes detected on equipment used in an area near where these products are packed," Country Fresh said in the recall notice.According to the notice, the product is currently sold at select Walmart stores in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas.Walmart stores removed removing the recalled product from shelves and inventories immediately. Costco says they are no longer selling their half-sheet cakes at U.S. clubs.In a statement to E.W. Scripps, the company said they have no immediate plans to bring them back."We are focusing on our smaller 10" white and 10" chocolate cakes that seem to be resonating with our members," the company said in the statement.According to Bloomberg, free samples returned to 30 stores across 16 states. CLEVELAND — A Cleveland website is facing backlash after attempting to be humorous about the foreclosure crisis and sex trafficking. Coolcleveland.com wrote an article about an upcoming gingerbread house making event at restaurant TownHall. In the now deleted post, the site said "the foreclosure crisis left a lot of empty gingerbread houses around Cleveland. Many end up becoming dens for cracker addicts." It also mentioned "gingerbread sex slaves."A spokesperson for TownHall said they were upset by the post. "We are appalled by the article written by Cool Cleveland. Commercial real estate leader Steve Schwab is looking to sign tenants to leases at a new development in downtown Denver but he’s running into troubles linked to the pandemic.“COVID has a had a major effect, probably the most major effect in the sales business,” he said.Schwab, a managing principal at Cushman & Wakefield, says COVID-19 has had a major impact on commercial real estate in a short amount of time.“Between the first quarter and the second quarter, we saw office investments sales decrease by about 72%,” he said.Schwab says unemployment, more people working from home and social distancing are impacting commercial real estate sectors like shopping centers, hotels, retail and office spaces.He says that the road to recovery will be very challenging, something other industry experts agree with.“The restaurants, the gyms, the bowling alleys, those are going to struggle over the next 12-18 months until we get back to full physical occupancy,” said Spencer Levy, chairman at CBRE.Levy says high inventory combined with low interest rates could attract foreign investors to American commercial real estate, something he welcomes with open arms.“Foreign money isn’t just cash. It brings everything with it. It brings jobs, it brings foreign students, it brings people that buy retail,” he said.But will foreign investment bring more people back inside massive buildings?Levy compares what today's commercial real estate industry needs to rebound to that of 9/11.“We had a period of time where people were tragically afraid to be back in the cities, afraid to go back into tall buildings.
