Worldwide furniture retailer IKEA announced Wednesday plans to stop the sale of alkaline batteries at all of its stores in lieu of rechargeable batteries, which the companies says is better for the environment.The retailer estimates it sells 300 million non-rechargeable alkaline batteries per year. IKEA said that alkaline batteries will no longer be available at stores by October 2021.According to IKEA, reusing a NiMH battery 50 times, the impact of NiMH batteries is equal to or even less than the impact of alkaline batteries. IKEA says its LADDA battery can be recharged up to 500 times.IKEA added that if each rechargeable battery is reused 50 times, global waste could be reduced by as much as 5,000 tons on an annual basis.“Consumers who need to frequently use batteries can benefit by replacing alkaline with rechargeable batteries. There are substantial savings to be made over time – on the environment as well as their wallets. Olomola, 38, was charged with two counts of abduction, reckless driving and felony hit and run for the Monday night incident.John Murray and Tameka Swann said Olomola picked them up from their home just before 8 p.m. Monday for a night out on the town.But, shortly after pulling away, they said someone rear-ended their Uber on Chamberlayne Avenue.“Our Uber attempted to pull over so that they exchange information, but the car didn’t stop behind us. They went around us and sped off and that’s when our Uber sped off behind him,” Swann said.Murray began to stream their trip on Facebook Live from the backseat.The driver pulled onto West Broad Street and raced through several red lights, according to the video.The couple said an SUV then crashed into the side of their car at West Broad Street and Arthur Ashe Boulevard. The video showed the driver continuing to speed away, narrowly missing a bicyclist.“At approximately 8:15 p.m. on Monday, officers were called to the 2800 block of West Broad Street for the report of a hit and run. Officers arrived and spoke to the driver who reported that while transporting passengers, his vehicle was struck by another car and that car left the scene,” a police spokesperson said.“That was the scariest moment of my life,” Swann said. “I have never been that scared in my life. It was a nightmare.”The couple says they suffered minor bruises and were checked out at the hospital.A spokesperson with Uber said they are also investigating the ride.“This driver’s behavior is concerning, and we have removed his access to the app pending investigation,” said an Uber spokeswoman.Anyone with information about the first hit and run or this incident is asked to call Detective G. Yvonne Staples, one of the four members of the famed gospel and R&B group the Staples Singers, died on Tuesday at the age of 80, a family spokesperson confirmed to NPR. A cause of death has not been announced. The Staples Singers had several No. 1 hits in the 1970s, including "I'll Take You There" and "Let's Do It Again." The group comprised of Yvonne Staples, and sisters Mavis and Cleotha and brother Pervis. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999. The Staples Singers also earned a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2005 Grammys. Yvonne's sister Cleotha died in 2013. Yvonne Staples was survived by her brother Pervis, and Mavis, who is coming off a tour with Bob Dylan.  766

With reported squabbling between the CDC and White House, the CDC announced late Wednesday that a no-sail order on passenger cruise ships has been extended through the month of October due to the coronavirus pandemic.The order, which will now run through Oct. 31, was set to expire tonight.According to the New York Times, the CDC had wanted to extend the order into February, but the White House blocked the move.The no-sail order, which originally began in April, prohibits cruise ships from carrying 250 passengers in waters subject to US jurisdiction.The CDC said it has identified at least 3,689 coronavirus-related illnesses, and 41 associated deaths, although the CDC cautions these figures are likely an underestimate.“On cruise ships, passengers and crew share spaces that are more crowded than most urban settings,” the CDC said. “Data show that when only essential crew are on board, ongoing spread of SARS-CoV-2 still occurs. If unrestricted cruise ship passenger operations were permitted to resume, passengers and crew on board would be at increased risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and those that work or travel on cruise ships would place substantial unnecessary risk on healthcare workers, port personnel and federal partners (i.e., Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Coast Guard), and the communities they return to.”While it’s possible the cruise industry can resume operations in November, it’s likely that the coronavirus will continue to have a significant effect on the industry for months to come. She received her heart from 21-year-old Blake Adkins, who died from a brain aneurysm. Emerson remains close to Adkins' mother Donna, who is overjoyed that her son lives on through Emerson and now her new baby boy, too."She was so excited because her son was not only able to keep me alive, but he was also to keep my baby alive as well," Emerson said. "I mean my heart, his heart, beats for two."Emerson says her family is now complete. She married her husband Bradley a year ago, and her family grew with his two children. Emerson also has an adopted son. Now with her new baby, Collings, she feels like her family is complete. But she knows it's a family that almost never was, and wouldn't have been without Adkins' sacrifice.She urges everyone to register to be a donor.
