It’s no secret we’re living in a very divisive time right now. It seems to be Democrats versus Republicans, or conservatives versus liberals. Whether it’s a family member or life partner, many of us are living with someone of an opposing viewpoint.In recent years, Jim Ryan has gotten used to playing pool by himself, but of course, he’d rather not play alone. He says in his old age he’s really appreciated having somebody else by his side.“I’m a widower and it’s nice to have a significant other that can help you out, and you can help them out,” Ryan said.Two and a half years ago, he met a new partner, but it didn’t take long to find out their political opinions were very different. He says he’s been a lifelong Democrat, and she’s a Republican. In a game of pool, if he were solids, she’d be stripes.“She said well, ‘Is that a dealbreaker since we’re opposite viewpoints?’ And I said 'Well, let me get back to you on that’ and we’ve been dating ever since,” Ryan said.Even though their feelings for each other are mutual, Ryan’s partner did not want to be identified in this story. He says she told him there’s too much tension between parties right now. Nonetheless, they have found a way to continue loving each other regardless of their political differences.“Politics, like religion, can be a game changer,” Couple's Counselor Ray Wynfield said.Ray Wynfield has been a couple’s counselor for nearly four decades. He says he offers advice to couples who politically disagree.“It’s a choice, people need to know it’s a choice. You can end a relationship over a church or religion, you can a relationship over politics – over Trump and Biden.”However, if you want to keep the peace between you and your significant other, or another family member, Wynfield says there’s a simple solution.“Don’t discuss it," Wynfield said. "Unless you can discuss it in a kind and respectful way where both people’s opinions and both people’s positions are respected.”Ryan says that’s something he often practices.“There are times where I have to bite my lip, and usually I’m the one that bites my lip,” Ryan said.According to Wynfield, if you and a loved one are struggling to get along in the midst of election season, you can work on skills to find peace between each other.“We need good communication skills, we need skills on how to be aware of our emotions, how to be aware of other people’s emotions,” Wynfield said.If you really do want to discuss politics, he says you shouldn’t react to another person’s views in a hateful way.“Even if you don’t like their candidate, even if you don’t respect their candidate, even if you think their candidate is evil, you don’t say that,” Wynfield said.In his 70 years of life, Ryan says he’s had civil conversations with people of opposing viewpoints. He’d like to see the same happen at the Capitol and all over the country.“I have a lot of friends that are lifelong Republicans and we get along just fine,” Ryan said.Above all else, Wynfield says we need to focus on the good our loving relationships bring us. He says there is so much more to each of us than our political affiliation.“What I hope people do in the next two weeks and after the election regardless of the results – that people can be kind and loving to each other and really appreciate the magic that they can have with a special friend,” Wynfield said. 3368

Interim Chief of Police Vanessa Wilson will be tasked with regaining the fractured trust of Aurora, Colorado residents after she was appointed the city's permanent chief of police during a city council meeting Monday night."I am honored, humbled, and energized by the trust the city manager, mayor, and council has placed in me. Aurora is a city that has experienced many triumphs and tragedies, and we sit at a crossroads for our city's future," Wilson said in a prepared statement moments after the vote. "I am committed to leading the Aurora Police Department to be an active and engaged part of this community in building a collaborative and constructive path forward. It's been several hours since Hurricane Laura made landfall, but the storm is still delivering devastating gusts of wind to inland Louisiana.In it's 4 a.m. CT update, the National Hurricane Center downgraded Laura from a Category 4 hurricane to a Category 3 hurricane. But the storm is still delivering maximum sustained winds of 120 mph, and "unsurvivable storm surge."According to the NHC, Laura will continue to deliver hurricane-force winds to central and northern Louisiana throughout the day on Thursday. The storm will then move to the northeast, bringing heavy rain to the Missouri Valley and Ohio Valley regions on Friday and through the weekend.Laura made landfall near Cameron, Louisiana at about 1 a.m. CT on Wednesday as an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 storm with 150 mph sustained winds. The Category 4 rating makes Laura is the strongest hurricane to make landfall in Louisiana in at least 60 years, according to the National Weather Service.The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Wednesday that "Laura is expected to produce catastrophic impacts from the coast to well inland; life-threatening storm surge, extreme winds, torrential rain, flooding, and tornadoes."On early Thursday morning, NOAA's Coastal Inundation Dashboard showed storm surge warnings all across Louisiana's shoreline. The dashboard also noted that readings from Calcasieu Pass — a tributary near Cameron that flows into the Gulf of Mexico — showed that surge was recorded at about 9 feet as of 1:30 a.m. CT."Take the next few hours and get your family to a safe location," Louisiana Gov. But a penny exchanged with a 10% return rate is a financially friendly investment.From the Texas panhandle to southeast Wisconsin, banks across the country are launching coin buyback programs amid a nationwide shortage."We just wanted to be prepared to take care of all of our customers and not leave them short," Erik Schrader of Amarillo National Bank said.Schrader says anyone can bring in up to ,000 in coins to Amarillo National locations and swap them for 10% more in cash. So far, he says the trade-off is paying off for both people and banks."I've never seen a coin shortage. We have had lows throughout time, but never anything we thought was a problem," he said. "But luckily, we were able to get out ahead of this."Some customers aren't even looking to cash in. Neil Buchanan of Community State Bank in Wisconsin says many customers are simply exchanging the coins for bills and not taking the 5% incentive."We've had a lot of people come in and say, "No, no. I don't want the bonus. I just heard that there was a problem. I have this coin. I want to be part of the solution.,'" he said.Economic experts say the coin shortage is linked to the pandemic."There was a decline in supply of coins by the mints and there was an increase in demand for the coins as we all got back to getting the groceries," said Kishore Kulkarni, Ph.D., a professor of economics at MSU Denver.Kulkarni said countries around the world have suffered from coin shortages before, and while these types of coin buyback programs do help the economy, more transactions in the future will require less exact change."We are in a cashless society already, and we will be more so moving forward," Kulkarni said.Moving forward financially, Amarillo National Bank will continue exchanging coins for cash through Sept. 1.
