Perhaps making up for lost time after going five years since her last starring role, Drew Barrymore pulls double duty in "The Stand-In." The comedy is a "The Prince and the Pauper" knockoff that isn't worthy of a single Barrymore performance, let alone two.While Barrymore shows off some range in exploring the two characters, the script doesn't provide enough material for either of them to stand out.She plays both fallen comedy star Candy Black and her meek stand-in, Paula. Once a judge sentences Candy to rehab, she and Paula work out a switcheroo deal that spares Candy the inconvenience of alcoholism recovery while giving Paula a break from her dreary life.You can usually tell whether or not a comedy has a shot at working in the first 15 minutes, when there are no concerns for setting up the story and the characters are free to romp without a care of advancing the tale. "The Stand-In" gets stuck in the mud early on, focusing on its bizarre setup. Candy comes off as an intolerable diva, while Paula is a helpless pushover. Neither is all that appealing.At least it's got Barrymore going for it. Bursting with personality while showing off the vulnerability that she's had full command of ever since she was a tyke in "E.T." she retains the star charisma that shot her up the ranks of the Hollywood elite. Since roles in the vein of "The Wedding Singer" and "Never Been Kissed" are no longer coming along, it's refreshing to see her reinvent herself as a Melissa McCarthy-style comedic force of nature.Director Jamie Babbit manages to squeeze a few laughs out of her capable ensemble cast, which includes Ellie Kemper and T.J. Miller, but the lazy story takes way too long to push forward, and any potential emotional impact falls by the wayside as the dull plot plods its way to its conclusion.The central message in most movies like this is that the grass isn't greener on the other side. PASCO COUNTY, Fla. — Drivers continue to share stories of scary moments and narrow escapes as there are more reports of Kia Souls catching fire.New complaints led I-Team Investigator Jackie Callaway to ask why some vehicles weren't included in the automaker's past recalls for engine fire risks.Brek Badgley says his 2015 Kia Soul burst into flames while rolling down I-75 northbound in Hernando County last December. He said the fire gutted the entire vehicle within minutes.“Just tossed my phone out of the window and started throwing stuff out of the car,” Badgley said.In April 2019, Kia recalled nearly 380,000 Kia Souls made between 2012 and 2016 over a defect that they say could cause a fire. We checked Brek’s VIN and found his Soul wasn't included in that recall.The I-Team discovered not every Soul made during those years was taken off the road. Kia says that's because even within the same model year, vehicles can have different equipment.Shelly Parks' 2015 Kia Soul was among those not recalled. Parks says it caught fire as she drove near Columbus, Ohio, last summer."We hear someone yell fire, and by the time we had noticed anything, there was fire coming from underneath the car," Parks said.She told the I-Team the car was still rolling to a stop when both she and her friend jumped out.“I watched the car roll past me on fire."The I-Team also found 2018 Kia Souls catching fire, according to three reports filed with federal regulators. Kia reports these Soul fires are rare and can be caused by any number of factors not related to engine defects.In August, 34-year-old Jordan Carlton died of his injuries a year after his rented 2019 Kia Soul went up in flames as he drove down a Hawaiian highway. (KGTV) -- A family dog missing after a deadly crash in Pauma Valley Friday was reunited with its family after being located by firefighters Sunday.Cal fire said firefighters and the San Diego County Department of Animal Services returned to the scene after the crash in an effort to locate the dog.“After lots of hiking through thick brush, the mission was a success and the family was reunited with their pet,” Cal Fire said.“We're with our community members on some of their worst days...and we'll always be there, doing everything we can help make things better,” the agency continued.The crash happened early Friday morning, killing a mother and injuring her 11-year-old son and his father.Crews responded to the scene of the crash after the vehicle was found overturned on an embankment near State Route 76 between Palomar Mountain and Oceanside.The man and child are expected to recover. 914

Police in Hampton, Virginia are investigating after 119 MacBook Air laptops were reported stolen from an elementary school.Officers were called to Phenix Elementary School on August 17.Police say two unidentified suspects broke into the school through a window shortly after 3 a.m. and made off with the computers.23-year-old Averi Wilkins of Hampton was charged with one count of possession of stolen property in connection to the case.Wilkins tells News 3 he buys and sells used electronics all the time and didn’t know the laptops had been stolen. He’s scheduled to be in court Tuesday.Hampton Schools says the stolen laptops have not been recovered. 661
