SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A stabbing at a College Area bus stop left a man badly injured Friday, authorities reported.The 50-year-old victim was waiting for a bus in the 6900 block of El Cajon Boulevard when the assailant approached and began arguing with him shortly before 11:30 a.m., according to San Diego police.The quarrel ended when the stranger pulled a knife and stabbed the other man in the arm, then fled on foot, Officer Tony Martinez said.Patrol personnel applied a tourniquet to the victim's bleeding arm and performed CPR on him prior to the arrival of paramedics, who took him to a hospital for treatment of serious but apparently non-life-threatening trauma.Witnesses reported that the assailant -- described as a heavyset, heavily tattooed man in his 20s or 30s, wearing a red shirt and black bandana- style mask -- left the area eastbound and appeared to enter a nearby motel, police said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An Arizona man who carried out a series of knifepoint rapes in the city of San Diego 24 years ago will be sentenced to 50 years to life in state prison early next year following his guilty plea to six rape counts.Christopher VanBuskirk, 47, of Goodyear, pleaded guilty Monday to threatening the victims with a knife while sexually assaulting them on four occasions between August and November of 1995, according to San Diego police.Deputy District Attorney Martin Doyle said Vanbuskirk also pleaded guilty to two knifepoint rapes committed in Riverside County in March 2002 and November 2004, with the Riverside County District Attorney's Office giving San Diego County prosecutors jurisdiction over those two cases.RELATED: Man accused of sexually assaulting six women since 1995 faces 190 yearsVanbuskirk is slated to be sentenced Feb. 20.Prosecutors said the four San Diego cases occurred twice in the Tierrasanta neighborhood, once in Pacific Beach, and once near San Diego Mesa College. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman who pointed what turned out to be a pellet gun at two San Diego police officers who followed her into a downtown parking structure during the Rock-N-Roll marathon is scheduled to be sentenced Friday.Mona Elease Williams, 59, pleaded guilty in September to a pair of felony counts of resisting an executive officer by threat or violence. She faces a maximum of eight years and four months in state prison.On the third day of the defendant's preliminary hearing three months ago, Deputy District Attorney Michael Runyon dismissed allegations that Williams personally used a deadly weapon in the crimes. He said that because he couldn't prove that the pellet gun was loaded, the allegations had to be dismissed.Williams -- who has convictions for burglary in 1986 and assault in 2003 and was sent to prison in 2015 -- would have faced 62 years to life behind bars if convicted as charged.The defendant's good friend, Lisa Wilson, testified that Williams texted ``death by cop'' hours before the June 3 confrontation with officers. In body-worn camera video recorded as Williams was arrested, she is seen frantically trying to explain to Officer Ronald Hamilton that she is bipolar and off her medications.``She told me she wanted to harm herself,'' Hamilton testified. "If a COVID-19 infection is detected among a participant, it will be very difficult to find and notify those who may have been exposed."These traditional Halloween celebrations are not advised, and large gatherings are not allowed, under state or local health guidance. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - According to a San Diego County prescription drug abuse report released Thursday, local opioid and prescription drug overdose deaths have increased significantly in recent years.The 2020 San Diego County Prescription Drug Abuse Task Force Report Card found that between 2018 and 2019, the number of unintentional fentanyl deaths increased by 64% and prescription drug deaths rose nearly 12%.The report card provides a variety of data to measure the prescription drug misuse problem in the region by looking at multiple factors and data points over the last five years in San Diego County.In 2019, 645 people died of an unintentional overdose caused by prescription and illicit drugs, as well as alcohol.Those include:151 fentanyl deaths compared to the 92 reported the previous year. The number continued to increase in 2020. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid primarily coming from Mexico that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine and 25 to 50 times stronger than heroin;275 deaths due to prescription drugs -- opioids and non-opioids -- up from 245 in 2018; and124 heroin deaths, up from the 105 reported the year before.In addition to deaths, the report card tracks additional key indicators of opioid misuse in the region.The report also found 6,162 visits to local emergency rooms in 2018, compared to 6,607 in 2017. Data for last year won't be available until 2021.Additionally, nearly half of adults arrested reported misusing prescription drugs in 2019. One silver lining is that fewer 11th graders reported prescription drug use in 2019 than in 2015.San Diego County funds prevention and treatment services throughout the region.
