CHANGSHA, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- A former Party discipline chief in a central China city was executed Thursday after being convicted of multiple counts of crime, said a local court.Zeng Jinchun, former secretary of the Chenzhou Municipal Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and vice secretary of the CPC Chenzhou Municipal Committee, was executed by shooting, said a statement from the Intermediate People's Court of Changsha City, capital of the central China's Hunan Province.Zeng was found guilty of taking more than 31 million yuan (about 4.7 million U.S. dollars) in bribes alone or along with others since the latter half of 1997 through to September 2006, said the court source.In return, he gave the bribers mine contracts and job promotions.Zeng had assets worth around 9.5 million yuan which he couldn't account for.He was sentenced to death by the Intermediate People's Court of Changsha City in November 2008 for accepting bribes and failing to account for his assets.The Hunan Provincial Higher People's Court rejected Zeng's appeal in July 2009. The Supreme People's Court had approved the death sentence handed down to Zeng, said the statement.

The show highlights Chinese ordinary people and some important figures recognized by the international community, including Chinese pianist Lang Lang, basketball player Yao Ming and Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei, etc."The layout of the video is quite smart. I like it," Charlotte Mcguckin, 18, a high school student in New York, told Xinhua, adding that "everyone (in the video) looks happy.""Look, that's Yao Ming. I can recognize him, and also the female table tennis player standing beside him. She is very famous, " she said, pointing to the giant screen. "I learned in class that U.S. and China started diplomatic ties from playing the table tennis," she smiled.For Si Yaqin, who came to New York with her son for vacation, watching the debut of the video is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. HOHHOT, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has stressed that herdsmens' living standards should not be lowered as the nation strives to conserve the grasslands.Wen made the remarks during a two-day tour to Xilingol, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, that ended Sunday.From the beginning of this year, China is giving financial assistance to herders for their efforts to conserve grasslands and to compensate them for their losses.China's pastoral regions are vast and have great development potential. The development of animal husbandry not only helps herders improve their living standards but also concerns cities' non-staple food supply, the Premier said."Periodic bans are an important step to restore the grasslands. They should be implemented gradually. Herders' living standards should not be lowered and pastoral regions' supply of beef and mutton should not be reduced during the process," he said.Officials should visit yurts to discuss the policy with affected herders, Wen said while inside a yurt, a traditional Mongolian tent.He called on authorities to devise policies for the sound and fast development of pastoral regions, on the basis of the new reward-compensation mechanism.He urged local governments to make more efforts to improve grass seeds, livestock and irrigation systems, to provide vocational training for herders and to facilitate the modernization of stock breeding and pasture areas.

CHONGQING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Environmental sanitation workers from southwest China's Chongqing Municipality have collected 78,000 tonnes of garbage from the Yangtze River near the Three Gorges Dam, ensuring the dam's safe and effective operation after its water level was raised.More than 68,000 workers in nearly 21,000 boats retrieved the garbage.In late October, the water level in the dam was lifted to its designed maximum of 175 meters, allowing the dam to play its full flood control, power generation, navigation and water supply roles, said Wang Yuankai, a Chongqing municipal work administrator.Raising the dam's water level increased the surface area of water in the dam. It also increased garbage collectors' workload, with about 60 percent more garbage appearing.The cleanup operation helped ensure the water quality of the dam and its navigability.The Three Gorges Dam is the world's largest water-control and hydropower project.
