Stefani Carroll-Kirchoff always checks the washer and dryer to make sure none of her three cats have climbed inside. Well, almost always.Last week, after fetching more clothes for a load of laundry, she shut the door without thinking. She set the machine to express wash -- warm water, cold rinse -- and walked away.Thirty-five minutes later, when the cycle was done, she noticed the clothes were still dripping wet. She was just about to shut the door again when she saw a single white paw sticking out from the wet laundry.Somehow, her 1-year-old cat Felix had found his way into the machine. She quickly took him out and called her father, who raced them to the Animal Emergency and Referral Center of Minnesota.Although Felix had lost his vision and had pneumonia from the amount of water in his lungs, he survived and is doing better now -- he can see and has started eating. He's still on oxygen.Though the vets told her it's just a matter of time until Felix fully recovers, Carroll-Kirchoff said she'll never forgive herself. "I've been in shock the last few days," she said. "I mean, this is going to haunt me for the rest of my life."The costs are going up, too. Carroll-Kirchoff's daughter began a GoFundMe appeal for Felix to help offset the rising medical bills, which she said are already up to ,000. She said it's the least they could do after Felix fought to stay alive."After this has happened, I'm going to find a way to give back," she said.Carroll-Kirchoff works at a pet grooming salon and has been a cat owner for 11 years. She also volunteers at a wildlife rehabilitation center in her free time. "It's given me a reason to fight harder for animals and their well-being," she said. 1718

Special counsel Robert Mueller's team has expressed reluctance to him testifying publicly in front of the House Judiciary Committee, according to sources familiar with the matter. The special counsel's team has expressed the notion that Mueller does not want to appear political after staying behind the scenes for two years and not speaking as he conducted his investigation into President Donald Trump. One option is to have him testify behind closed doors, but sources caution numerous options are being considered in the negotiations between the committee and the special counsel's team.Justice officials are generally supportive of how the special counsel's team is proceeding with negotiations. As Attorney General Bill Barr told The Wall Street Journal last week: "It's Bob's call whether he wants to testify."Special counsel spokesman Peter Carr and the Justice Department declined to comment on the current status of negotiations.House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, a New York Democrat, has repeatedly said that Mueller must appear publicly, and he will subpoena Mueller if necessary."Eventually we will hear from Mueller because ... we will subpoena him if we have to," Nadler told CNN earlier this month. "I certainly hope it doesn't come to the, to our necessity to subpoena him," he added.Rep. Doug Collins, the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee, suggested at Tuesday's hearing, a meeting where former White House counsel Don McGahn did not appear after being subpoenaed, that Democrats appeared to have a lack of urgency scheduling Mueller's testimony."We've subpoenaed the documents, we've subpoenaed the underlying documents, we've subpoenaed stuff that we can't get, but the one thing that we seem to avoid is Mr. Mueller himself, the one who wrote it," Collins said. "We've asked since April about Mr. Mueller coming. But every time we seem to get close to Mueller, Mueller just gets pushed on a little bit. Haven't seen a subpoena here, and this is what's really amazing -- we'll get back to subpoenas in a moment -- but just think about that. You wanted the work of the author, but you don't want to talk to the author."After the hearing, Collins would not say whether he'd support a subpoena for Mueller's testimony.Separately, Nadler told CNN's Chris Cuomo on Monday he doesn't know what's keeping Mueller as an employee of the Justice Department, suggesting he was "more subject to their discipline" than he would be as a private citizen. "The report is finished. I don't know why he is still there," Nadler said.Mueller has been seen arriving for work almost every morning since the report was released in April. The Justice Department has not commented on what work still remains. 2726

SANTA FE, N.M. – George R.R. Martin, the author of the books that inspired the TV show “Game of Thrones,” says he’s practicing social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic. Martin provided the update to his fans in a blog post Tuesday, saying that he’s spending the time at his Santa Fe home writing the next book in the “Song of Ice and Fire” series. “Truth be told, I am spending more time in Westeros than in the real world, writing every day,” he wrote. “Things are pretty grim in the Seven Kingdoms… but maybe not as grim as they may become here.” As a 71-year-old man, Martin is in high risk age group for COVID-19, the illness caused by the virus. However, he says he’s taking the necessary precautions. “For those of you who may be concerned for me personally… yes, I am aware that I am very much in the most vulnerable population, given my age and physical condition,” he wrote. “But I feel fine at the moment, and we are taking all sensible precautions. I am off by myself in a remote isolated location, attended by one of my staff, and I’m not going into town or seeing anyone.”Martin, one of the most celebrated fantasy writers, went on to say that he can’t help feeling as if we are living in a science fiction novel.“But not, alas, the sort of science fiction novel that I dreamed of living in when I was a kid, the one with the cities on the Moon, colonies on Mars, household robots programmed with the Three Laws, and flying cars,” wrote Martin, :I never liked the pandemic stories half so well…”The writer also provided updates on the status of his businesses, including his bookstore, art installation and theater, as well as his nonprofit. 1674
