Vicki Wilkins of American University in Washington, D.C. had an idea: add more students to their classrooms during the partial government shutdown. “To give them a chance while furloughed to get some new skills, take a workshop get some networking in,” Wilkins says.The idea was to offer 12 free classes for those whose paychecks have been on hiatus since late last year. Classes include subjects like “Building Your Brand” and “Mindfulness in the Workplace.” Paul Bamonte, who works for the Department of Homeland Security, is one of those impacted by the shutdown. He, and hundreds of others attending the free classes, feels the stresses of the shutdown. "We all want to get back to work,” Bamonte says. “We all want to do what we signed up for.” Bamonte says things have been pretty frustrating the past couple of weeks. “It's hard to plan for anything in the future, for financial, for vacations, without an end state in place,” he says. “I think that's one of the main stress points.” He says events like free classes at American University are helping. “I try not to focus on it every day, because I come to events like this, so I can just forget about it for a while and get back to what’s more important--connecting with other people, connecting with colleagues, sharing ideas, doing some training and development, and refreshing your mind a little bit,” Bamonte says. Wilkins says giving the gift of added education is just their way of giving back. “I think it's fantastic that we can come together and help them, and this is just the part we can do,” Wilkins says. “Naturally, as a university, this is what we thought we could offer to federal employees so we wanted step in and do that part.” 1722

The flood gates are now closed in New Orleans as the city braces for Tropical Storm Barry.Authorities have warned people in low-lying parts of Louisiana to evacuate. Rescue crews and National Guard troops are stationed across the city and state, preparing to assist in boat rescues. Earlier this week, heavy rain flooded the street and it may just be a preview of what’s to come as Barry gets stronger and moves closer to land. The storm is expected to make landfall in Louisiana early Saturday. A communication satellite almost out of fuel has gotten a new life after the first space docking of its kind. Northrop Grumman and Intelsat announced the successful docking nearly 22,500 miles above Earth on Wednesday. Northrop Grumman's satellite this week closed in on the aging Intelsat satellite and clamped onto it. The duo will remain attached for the next five years. The Intelsat satellite was never designed for this kind of docking, but officials said everything went well. Northrop Grumman envisions satellite refueling and other robotic repairs in another five to 10 years. 597

A 2-year-old boy was found dead Monday inside a daycare van in Oakland Park, Florida, authorities said.The boy had been transported in the van to Ceressa's Enrichment and Empowerment Academy at some point Monday, Broward County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion said.The Sheriff's Office does not know what time the boy arrived at the daycare, or what happened between then and the time he was found deceased inside the van.The sheriff's office and Oakland Park Fire Rescue crews were called at around 3:20 p.m., 537

(CNN) — Responding to customers' demands, Whole Foods is ramping up its war on disposable plastic.The Amazon-owned company announced Monday that will stop offering plastic straws across all of its 500 stores in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. Whole Foods claims it's the first national grocery chain to make the environmentally friendly move.The company currently offers plastic straws to customers at its juice and coffee bars, as well at its cafes. It will start offering paper straws beginning in July. Plastic straws will still be available for customers with disabilities, upon request.Whole Foods will also reduce its plastic usage in other parts of the store. It will also offer smaller plastic bags in the produce department and will start using new bags for its rotisserie chickens that use 70% less plastic than the hard plastic cases they will replace."We recognize that single-use plastics are a concern for many of our customers, Team Members and suppliers, and we're proud of these packaging changes, which will eliminate an estimated 800,000 pounds of plastics annually," Whole Foods' chief merchandising officer AC Gallo said in a statement.The company stopped offering disposable plastic bags in 2008.
