MOSCOW, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Representatives and financial institutions from China and Russia on Wednesday signed 13 agreements worth eight billion U.S. dollars.Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Zhukov, the two chairmen from each side of the Joint Commission for China-Russia Regular Meetings of Heads of Government, attended the signing ceremony held at the fifth China-Russia economic and trade summit forum.Among the deals were two financial agreements worth 236 million dollars, 10 cooperative agreements on economy and technology totalling 5.3 billion dollars, and one trade agreement worth around 320 million dollars.The agreements covered a wide range of areas including commercial trade, investment, mining, manufacturing, construction and telecommunications equipment.The signing of the 13 agreements has fully demonstrated the continuous deepening and broadening economic cooperation between the enterprises of China and Russia, thanks to the efforts of the governments of the two countries.

BEIJING, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- China should steadily promote the internationalization of its currency, the yuan, the head of China's social security fund said Saturday.The internationalization of the yuan is a significant step for advancing the reform of the international monetary system, Dai Xianglong, chairman of China's National Council for Social Security Funds, said when speaking at annual economic forum in Beijing.The current international monetary system has not adapted to the new patterns of global economic development, he said, adding that currency diversification is a realistic solution.Currency diversification means continuing the role of dollar, increasing the role of the euro and internationalizing other currencies, he said.The U.S. dollar, serving as both the U.S. currency and the most important international currency, will be used for U.S. policy goals when the two roles contradict each other, spurring fluctuations in global financial markets, he said, adding that the dollar has a tendency to depreciate.He said the Chinese yuan is a stable currency, and so ensures the safety of other countries' assets.The Chinese currency also enhances world trade, protecting the interests of China's foreign trade and investment, he added.The internationalization of the yuan will take 15 to 20 years, he said, suggesting an expansion of the overseas circulation of the yuan and an acceleration in the opening-up of China's large commercial banks to speed up the process.He urged Chinese banks in foreign countries to offer funding in yuan.He also called for more efforts to reform the interest rate mechanism, to ease the process of the internationalization of the yuan.

SHANGHAI, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Shanghai municipal government bore unshirkable responsibility for a high-rise fire that took 58 lives two months ago, Mayor Han Zheng said Sunday at the city's parliamentary session.Though the final investigation report on the fire has not been released, the accident exposed chaos and a lack of safety supervision in the construction market, for which the government was responsible, Han said in a report to the annual session of the Shanghai Municipal People's Congress, the local legislature.Han said his government would draw lessons from the incident and strengthen management and supervision to ensure work safety.The fire on Nov. 15, 2010 engulfed a 28-story residential building in Shanghai after welding sparks set nylon netting and scaffolding on fire.Officials blamed the fire, that killed 58 people, on unlicensed welders, illegal sub-contracting and poor management.On Jan. 11, the Shanghai municipal government issued new regulations to tighten supervision of the city's construction industry.The 22-article regulations covered eight aspects, such as construction processes, risk control, contractor management and government supervision.

NEW YORK, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States will continue to pursue the common interest without being affected by the recent changes of the U.S. political landscape, said a U.S. scholar on Friday."There is a lot of consistency in China-U.S. relations. If you look back over time, whether it is Democrats or Republicans in the Congress or in the White House, China has always been an important country for the United States. Both countries will continue to pursue the common interest," said Elizabeth Wishnick, Research Associate at Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University.She told Xinhua in an interview that it would be difficult to see major changes occurring between U.S.-China ties after the U.S. midterm elections, because both countries share so many common interests in terms of preventing the nuclear proliferation weapons and reducing the problems of terrorism, etc."Keep in mind the long-term interests we share and the long history of cooperation we have, China and U.S. will find ways to move forward and have good possibility for future cooperation," she stressed.Wishnick admitted that it is a difficult time right now for U.S. and China, because "the economy is pulling both nations in different directions and no solution has been worked out yet to resolve the pressing economic problems that divide us.""It's a challenge for us to keep focus on what can be accomplished bilaterally, instead of getting too distracted by pressing current problems. XI'AN, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- A 100-member team of Chinese soldiers left here Friday for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for an eight-month UN peace-keeping operation there. They formed the first batch of China's 12th peace-keeping team to DRC since 2003.
