SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police are looking for the thief who committed a brazen robbery at a South Park metaphysical shop, stealing a ,000 crystal ball in broad daylight in front of store staff and other customers.The theft occurred Monday afternoon around 12:30 p.m. at Crystal Blue Vibrations, San Diego Police said. "This was a lot worse than we thought," co-owner Andrew Lucas told 10News. "That's when we went to the video tape and it showed everything."The thief could be seen casually walking through the store, chatting with an employee behind the counter. He then walked over to the front display, which included several large crystal spheres. He reached in to grab an expensive one, but knocked over a shelf, leaving shattered glass all over and drawing the attention of the employee. However, it appears the employee did not realize the man was attempting to steal the item. While the employee was focused on cleaning up the mess, the the thief can be seen grabbing the crystal ball, placing it on the ground, dribbling it like a soccer ball to the front door, then bending over to pick it up and walk out. "I thought I'd seen it all," Lucas said. "Yeah, it's pretty brazen. It's heartbreaking."Lucas says he plans to limit how much access customers have to certain items in the future. "And more security, but I guess that's what the world is coming to."A police report has been filed. Lucas hopes someone may recognize the thief from the surveillance video and will come forward to identify him. 1513

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Most San Diego voters support a sales tax for public transit improvements, according to a study commissioned by the Metropolitan Transit System and the San Diego Association of Governments. Poll results released Wednesday show more than two-thirds of voters are in favor of a dedicated half-cent sales tax measure to raise revenue for new projects, FM3 Research reported. The City of San Diego’s current sales tax is 7.75 percent. 44 percent of those surveyed said they were “definitely yes” in favor of the sales tax measure. 23 percent voted “probably yes”. 19 percent said they were “definitely no” on a tax hike increase, according to the study.The poll results are the first step in a discussion between transit officials and the public that are expected to take place through the end of 2019. MTS will review public input and propose a spending and financing plan. “We have significant public interest in bringing fast, safe, reliable public transit to San Diego and the region,” said San Diego County Supervisor and MTS Board Member Nathan Fletcher. “It is time to reimagine how our region moves by working together to create a transit strategy that connects our communities, reduces congestion, provides more transportation options and builds the foundation for a cleaner, greener, more sustainable future. We have a lot of work to do, but we are encouraged by the results.” Transit upgrades and additions could include new trolley and bus routes, and safety enhancements, MTS officials said. “We are taking the next steps to creating a shared vision of the San Diego we want to see and this includes real choices in how residents move throughout their day,” said MTS Board Chair and San Diego City Council President Georgette Gómez. “We must be intentional and inclusive. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Newly-released records detail several officer involved shootings involving a San Diego Police officer.The City of San Diego released several written reports along with body worn camera video and audio of police and witness interviews. The shootings took place in 2016 and 2017 and involved San Diego Police Officer Richard Butera.In December 2017, San Diego Police received several 911 calls regarding a man trying to break into homes in the Sunset Cliffs neighborhood. Police say that when they arrived, 24-year-old Kyle Zahacefski was in the front yard of a home in the 1200 block of Trieste Drive.Zahacefski began throwing bricks at the police officers, they said. Next, he took off running and the officers lost sight of him. Officers then heard sounds of glass breaking and they discovered a shattered glass door on a home in the neighborhood. Believing the residents may have been in danger, officers entered the house immediately and located the suspect in the kitchen.Zahacefski grabbed a knife and pointed it at his throat. The officers ordered him to drop the knife repeatedly but he refused. Instead, Zahacefski pointed it at the officers and began walking quickly towards them.One of the officers, later identified as Officer Richard Butera, fired several rounds from his AR-15 rifle and another officer fired one round from his bean bag shotgun.In June 2018, District Attorney Summer Stephan said the shooting was justified. Along with body-worn camera video, police released a more than 500-page report detailing their investigation.Police also released an investigative report and audio interviews regarding a 2016 Hillcrest area shooting.Officer Richard Butera fatally shot Joshua Sisson , 30, while responding to a domestic violence incident on Lewis Street. Police say Sisson turned and pointed a large kitchen knife at Butera and was shot in the chest when he advanced towards the officer."The knife-wielding suspect refused to comply. The suspect aggressively advanced towards the officer with the knife," said San Diego police Lt. Manny Del Toro.After Sisson's death, police discovered he had been wanted on a warrant for alleged felony parole violations.A criminal records check showed Sisson had served prison time for setting a family's home on fire in 2009. He pleaded guilty in that case to 13 counts of attempted murder, one count of arson and one count of carrying a concealed weapon.In audio recordings released by the department you can hear Butera describe where he was standing when the shooting took place. An audio interview with a witness also gives insight into what police encountered.“The officer yelled 'stop' again, both times it was very clear, 'stop',” an unidentified male witness said. “The suspect this time turned to his left and his hand went into his waistband.”According to 10News records, Butera has been involved in three other officer involved shootings.In a statement to 10News a spokesperson for the San Diego Police Department wrote, “Officer Butera has been a sworn member of the San Diego Police Department for the past 17 years. In addition to his patrol duties, he has been a member of the SWAT team for over 10 years. Officer Butera has been involved in incidents in which he has discharged a firearm to stop a deadly threat to himself and the public. Each of these incidents were investigated by the Homicide Unit and the investigations were ultimately presented to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office for review. Officer Butera was cleared in all of the incidents. We hope the community examines each case independently and comes to the same conclusion.” 3655

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Parents with students in the San Diego Unified School District are concerned after finding out the state medical board subpoenaed doctors who wrote their students medical exemptions for vaccinations.The district’s physician, Dr. Howard Taras, tells 10News, “We have many more medical exemptions over the past two years than we’ve ever had before.”Taras worked with the district for 30 years and says the increase in medical exemptions concerned him, so he brought it to the Committee on Infectious Diseases of the American Academy of Pediatrics.“I gave them loose data, like how many kids in the school district had medical exemptions that any doctor would see as a very worthwhile reason and how many were coming from doctors that were not very sound reasons in common medical practice," Taras said.The committee then took that list to the Medical Board of California. Now, parents in the district are upset knowing their child was included in a list sent to the state.“I’m absolutely appalled at the irresponsibility to have compiled this list in the first place. This is nothing that should have ever been getting out," a mother who did not want to be identified told 10News.10News learned the medical board is now investigating and has already subpoenaed 32 doctors who wrote medical exemptions for students in the district. A parent shared the letter that was sent home with their student with 10News. The letter states the information being subpoenaed includes:1. The unredacted copy of medical vaccination exemption letters 2. The name and date of birth of all children with medical vaccination exemption 3. The name(s) of the parent and/or legal guardian 4. The contact information of the parent and/or legal guardian “This is a violation of FERPA this is 100 percent unethical and I would say illegal based upon what’s taken place," a parent said.The district’s litigation specialist explains all parents have the right to seek protective action to prevent the disclosure of records. “If some of the actions that I and the medical board have taken lead to fewer medical exemptions, I really truly believe we will save people from fatality," said Taras.A representative with the state medical board responded to our request for more information saying, “The Board does not provide information on its complaints and investigations as both are confidential by law.” 2398

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One young man was named the newest recruit of the San Diego Police Department Wednesday.SDPD's newest officer, five-year-old Liam, was sworn in by Chief David Nisleit as part of a ceremony hosted by the department and Make-A-Wish San Diego.Liam, who was born with a congenital heart defect, began his first day on the beat soon after his ceremony. He and his partner received a call to help capture a bank robber. Bank of America also partnered with Make-A-Wish to offer up a location for a bank robbery and arrest scene, where the two cops took in the suspect.Liam and his partner then returned to police headquarters to interview the suspect.The Make-A-Wish event was held just one day before the department celebrates its 130th anniversary. 770
