House Speaker Paul Ryan found out that he is part Jewish as part of the upcoming season of PBS' show "Finding Your Roots."The show's host, Henry Louis Gates Jr., shared the Wisconsin Republican's reaction to discovering his roots during a panel on Tuesday."You could have knocked him over with a feather and then he was very proud of it," Gates, who also serves as an executive producer on the show, said during the Television Critics Association press tour in Los Angeles.A publicist for the show confirmed Gates' comments during the panel, and Ryan's upcoming appearance on the show, in an email to CNN."We don't know who that Jewish person was, but we know it was on his mother's German line, which makes sense," Gates continued. "So somebody who was a Christian German slept with a Jewish German person and that's where that came from."In a tweet on Wednesday, Ryan, who is Catholic, seemingly hinted at finding out about his roots."Guess I need to start saying 'L'Chaim' now, too!" he tweeted, attaching a GIF of himself holding up a drink. He did not reference the show itself in the social media post.PBS said in a news release that the new 10-episode season of "Finding Your Roots" -- which debuts in January -- also features Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida and Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii.Last year in an episode of the show, comedian Larry David and Vermont's independent Sen. Bernie Sanders found out they were related.Other guests this upcoming season include CNN's Christiane Amanpour and "Game of Thrones" author George R.R. Martin.The-CNN-Wire 1585

IMPERIAL BEACH (KGTV) -- Just in time for spring break, county health officials announced Saturday that it's safe to go back into the waters of Imperial Beach. The re-opened beach-line includes the south end of Seacoast Drive to Carnation Avenue (including Camp Surf) in Imperial Beach. The ocean shoreline from the International Border to the south end of Seacoast Drive will remain closed until sampling confirms these areas are safe for water contact, officials said."Testing confirms water quality along the Imperial Beach shoreline meets State health standards following recent Tijuana River sewage impacts," said the Department of Environmental Health and Hazardous Materials Division."Recent water quality testing conducted by DEH confirms that Tijuana River flows are no longer impacting these beaches," the DEH said. The announcement comes after weeks of beach closures due to a sewage-contaminated runoff into the Tijuana River valley which flowed into south county beaches. The beaches have been closed over a dozen times as a result of the heavy rainfall this season."Tijuana River flows enter the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge and associated estuary before being discharged to the Pacific Ocean, just over a mile north of the International Border," according to the DEH.Anyone who needs more information is asked to call the U.S. International Boundary & Water Commission at 619-662-7600. If you get a letter in the mail from the IRS, you might want to open it.In an attempt to track down some Americans who did not receive an economic impact check earlier this year, the IRS said on Thursday it is sending 9 million letters to Americans who do not file a traditional tax return. The letter will encourage recipients of the letter to visit the IRS.gov before an Oct. 15 deadline to register for a stimulus check. For most Americans, the checks are worth ,200.“The IRS continues to work hard to reach people eligible for these payments,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. “These mailings are the latest step by the IRS to reach as many people as possible for these important payments. We are releasing this state-by-state information so that state and local leaders and organizations can better understand the size of this population in their communities and assist them in claiming these important payments. Time is running out to claim a payment before the deadline.”But the IRS says just because you receive a letter does not automatically make you eligible. To be eligible, the IRS requires that an individual is a US citizen or resident alien, have a work-eligible Social Security Number and can’t be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return.Americans who earn less than ,200 a year, or married couples earning less than ,400 a year, are not required to submit a federal tax return. These Americans, if they did not apply for a stimulus check, would have been excluded from receiving a check unless they earn another form of government income, such as Social Security. Those who believe they are eligible for a check don’t have to wait for the letter. A tool is available on the IRS’ webpage by clicking here.As a reminder, here is who is eligible for a stimulus check:,400 – Couples earning less than 0,000 a year (couples earning 0,000 - 8,000 will receive a prorated check).,200 – Individuals earning less than ,000 a year (individuals earning ,000 - ,000 will receive a prorated check).,200 – Heads of households earning less than 2,500 (heads of households earning 2,500 - 6,000 will receive a prorated check).0 - Each dependent child age 16 or under as of Dec. 31, 2019 (for qualifying individuals and couples). 2291

In a new effort to tackle the deadly opioid addiction crisis in the US, pharmacy giant CVS announced on Friday it will limit opioid prescriptions to seven days for certain conditions. This restriction will apply to patients who are new to pain therapy. The new pharmacy program will also limit the daily dosage of pain pills based on their strength and will require use of immediate-release formulations before extended release opioids -- intended for severe, long-term pain treatment -- are dispensed. The changes will roll out on February 1, 2018 and cover all commercial, health plan, employer and Medicaid clients.CVS, which manages medications for nearly 90 million plan members, is one of the largest pharmaceutical chains in the US, with approximately 9,600 CVS Pharmacy stores and more than 1,100 walk-in medical clinics."With a presence in nearly 10,000 communities across the country, we see firsthand the impact of the alarming and rapidly growing epidemic of opioid addiction and misuse," said Larry J. Merlo, president and CEO of CVS Health. From 1999 to 2014, sales of prescription opioids in the US almost quadrupled, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, yet there has been no change in pain reported by Americans.CVS said its pharmacists will also counsel patients with opioid prescriptions about the risk of dependence and addiction based on CDC guidelines. These educational sessions will also emphasize the importance of keeping medications secure in the home and proper disposal of unused medication. To help patients wanting to follow these guidelines, the company will almost double the number of drug disposal units in its Medication Disposal for Safer Communities Program from 800 to 1,550 kiosks. This expansion will begin this fall with locations in Florida, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and the District of Columbia. The company is also committing million to Community Health Centers that provide medication-assisted treatment and other addiction recovery services. The President's opioid commission says that about 142 Americans die every day from a drug overdose, equal to the death toll from the September 11 attacks every three weeks. Most of those overdoses are from opioids.Though there were over 30,000 fatal overdoses from opioid drugs in 2015, public health experts believe that for every fatal overdose, there are 30 non-fatal overdoses. That would mean over 900,000 overdoses in 2015 alone.According to the CDC, drug overdoses are the leading cause of unintentional death in the US.  2589
