BEIJING, June 28 (Xinhuanet) -- A truck-sized asteroid passed over the Atlantic Ocean within 7,500 miles of the Earth on Monday, according to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The space rock, called asteroid 2011 MD, is the second space rock to zip extremely close to the Earth this year. The asteroid, with latest size estimates ranging from 16 to 66 feet (5 to 20 meters) wide, was discovered just last week on June 22, but there was never any risk of it impacting the Earth, NASA scientists said. That means asteroid 2011 MD would likely be too small to survive the fiery plunge through the Earth's atmosphere, let alone reach the surface, NASA scientists said. Asteroids this size can be expected to buzz Earth with close shaves about once every six years, they added. The space rock flew well below geosynchronous satellites, which orbit 22,236 miles (35,786 km) above the Earth, but well above the 220-mile (354-km) altitude of the International Space Station. There was little chance that the asteroid would hit a satellite because of the vastness of space and relatively small number of satellites, experts said.

SAN FRANCISCO, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Apple's chief executive officer Steve Jobs on Monday took a break from his medical leave to introduce the company's new cloud-based service iCloud.Jobs, in his trademark black turtleneck and jeans, got a standing ovation in San Francisco's Moscone Center when he appeared on stage. Someone screamed "I love you," and Jobs said " it always helps and I appreciated it.""ICloud stores your content in the cloud and wirelessly pushes it to all your devices," said Jobs, calling it Apple's "next big insight."According to Apple, iCloud Backup will automatically back up users' iOS devices to iCloud daily over Wi-Fi when they charge their iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Backup content includes purchased music, apps, camera roll, device settings and app data. It will also automatically upload documents from iWork in the cloud and pushes them to users' all relevant devices. The service will currently be free and replaces the former MobileMe which Apple once charged 99 U.S. dollars per year.Users will get five gigabytes of memory which is not counting purchased apps, music or books. A beta version is available on Monday and the final version will be shipping with iOS 5 this fall, with paid plans for more storage to be announced at that time. For a 24.99-dollar paid music plan named iTunes Match, a user's iTunes library will be scanned and they will gain instant access to those tracks or albums from compatible devices, rather than uploading them. Song files, including those converted from CDs, will also be uploaded to iCloud if they are not matched in iTunes stores but recognized by music labels.Jobs pointed out that iTunes Match paid plan is cheaper than Amazon's offering and Google has not announced a price yet, saying "it's an industry leading effort."The Apple CEO finally showed a photo of the company's new, massive data center in North Carolina to emphasize Apple is ready for iCloud service. Before Jobs, Apple executives introduced Lion, the eighth major release of Mac OS X and iOS 5, the next version of Apple's mobile operating system.Phil Schiller, Apple's marketing chief and Craig Federighi, the OS X software vice president, introduced ten key new features among the 250 ones of the new Mac operating system, including multi-touch features that bring the users experience on iPhone to their computers.Lion will be available to customers in July in Mac App Store. The price is adjusted to 29.99 dollars from 129 dollars Apple used to charge for upgrades.Scott Forstall, head of Apple's iOS software, demoed Apple's new mobile operating system, noting that iOS already has 44 percent of the mobile operating system market. The new version iOS 5 will have more than 200 new features, including a Notification Center that catches missed calls, mail messages and phone messages; and a feature called Reminder that provides virtual Post-it notes using geolocation technology. The new mobile operating system also integrates Twitter with many other iPhone apps and has a Newsstand on which the newspaper and magazines icons will be the actual covers of the publications.Apple said that iOS 5 is coming to the public this fall, which probably means the new iPhone is coming in the fall as well.Apple's new services are unveiled at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Jobs kicked off the keynote event by saying that Apple had sold out 5,200 tickets to attendees just in two hours.

BEIJING, June 26 (Xinhua) -- A drama honoring an archivist who had devoted himself to the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA)'s archive work was staged Saturday evening in Beijing. The drama, "Sheng Ming Dang An," or "Archives of Life," tells the life story of Liu Yiquan who had worked as a file clerk and later a consultant at the PLA Archives for about 38 years.Liu had collected more than 830,000 pieces of military archives, which was regarded as a special contribution to the army. Li Changchun (L, front), a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, congratulates actors on the successful performance of drama "life archives" in Beijing, capital of China, June 25, 2011.Despite being diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2008, Liu continued to work hard. He died on Jan. 28, 2010, at the age of 59.Li Changchun, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, joined the audience of the drama on Saturday.Li later said the drama was touching and significant in reflecting the model role of CPC members ahead of the 90th founding anniversary of the CPC.Liu Yiquan was also honored by the U.S. military authorities for his role in helping identify some key documents that led to the repatriation of the remains of the United States personnel who disappeared during and after the Korea War (1950-1953).

SYDNEY, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- People sitting in front of TV for hours on end could shorten their life expectancy by almost five years, according to an Australian study published on Tuesday by the British Journal of Sports Medicine.Researchers from the University of Queensland estimate that for every hour adults spend in front of TV, their life expectancy shortens by almost 22 minutes. Those who watched six hours a day lived 4.8 years less than those who don't watch TV.The study is the first in Australia to look into how TV habits affect longevity. The Australian researchers found that watching TV could have a similar negative impact on life expectancy to that of obesity, smoking and low physical activity."People don't realize how it all adds up," the study's lead author Dr. Lennert Veerman told the Australian Associated Press (AAP)."They should try not to watch too much TV and find alternative things to do, preferably things that are light activities," Veerman said. The study was based on data from the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle study and asked more than 11,000 people aged over 25 about their weekly TV viewing time. The study found that in 2008 Australian adults watched 9.8 billion hours of TV."These findings suggest that substantial loss of life may be associated with prolonged TV viewing time among Australian adults," the study said."TV viewing time may have adverse health consequences that rival those of lack of physical activity, obesity and smoking; every single hour of TV viewed may shorten life by as much as 22 minutes," it said."With further corroborative evidence, a public health case could be made that adults also need to limit the time spent watching TV."Australians are recommended to spend at least 30 minutes a day doing moderate-intensity physical activity to reduce an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

LOS ANGELES, July 18 (Xinhua) -- At least 70 genetic mutations may be involved in the formation of colon cancer, far more than scientists previously thought, a new study suggests. The study by researchers at University of Texas (UT) Southwestern Medical Center contradicts previous thinking that only a few mutated genes may play a role in the development of colon cancer."The ways we've been treating patients up to now is to just go after one target when we should be going after three to four different pathways simultaneously," said Dr. Jerry W. Shay, vice chairman and professor of cell biology at UT Southwestern. The new study identified 65 candidate genes and at least five passenger genes whose mutations play significant roles in cancer development. Inactivating the function of any of these tumor- suppressing genes led to a key step in cancer development called anchorage-independent growth, meaning cells piled up on top of each other rather than aligning neatly.According to previous studies, there were 151 candidate genes and that mutations in just eight to 15 of them would lead to cancer. There were 700 other genes classified as passenger genes whose mutations were incidental to cancer growth.Current cancer treatments target just one or two known cancer- driver genes. While patients may get transient tumor burden reduction, almost universally tumor growth returns."Those numbers are dead wrong," Dr. Shay said, suggesting a new approach to colon cancer treatments targeting multiple genes and pathways simultaneously. The next step is further research to classify more accurately which genes drive cancer and which are merely passengers, the researchers said.Study findings were published in the July 2011 Cancer Research (Priority Reports).
