DETROIT (AP) — Walmart is teaming up with the General Motors’ autonomous vehicle unit to test driverless delivery in Arizona. The companies say battery powered Chevrolet Volt vehicles will begin deliveries in Scottsdale early next year. At first they’ll have human backup drivers who will monitor the cars and help to deliver packages to doors. But Ray Wert, spokesman at GM’s Cruise autonomous vehicle unit, says they’ll eventually move to fully autonomous deliveries. Walmart says customers will be able to place an order and it will be delivered contact-free by a Cruise vehicle. The retail giant says it’s one of several autonomous vehicle pilot projects designed to chart a new roadmap for retail sales.Wert says the testing with Walmart will start small and gradually ramp up to more vehicles. He did not know how many Volts would be used at the beginning. The company says it started an express delivery service in April and now has it in over 2,800 stores that reach more than 65% of U.S. households. 1015

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) — While a hotly-debated gun show is returning to the Del Mar Fairground, its future remains clouded after a recently signed law. The Crossroads of the West gun show returned to the fairgrounds Saturday, two months after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill banning the sale of guns and ammo at the venue. That law doesn't take effect until 2021, allowing the gun show to continue until then."It's been a mainstay for 30 years in San Diego and a small group of extremists tried to get it canceled and were successful for just a few months last year, but fortunately the courts stepped in and said, 'no you can't discriminate against a group based on what they described as their culture," Michael Schwartz, executive director of San Diego County Gun Owners, told reporters Saturday. "The fight's not over."RELATED: California adopts broadest US rules for seizing gunsThat fight will continue in a year. Assembly Bill 893, introduced in February by State Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-78), argues California shouldn't have a role in facilitating gun sales. Gov. Newsome signed the bill last October."People have the right to continue to buy guns at private establishments," Gloria said shortly after the bill's signing. "The state just shouldn't have a role in facilitating the flow of guns into neighborhoods where children are killed." Protesters are expected outside of the show Saturday to counter gun advocates."They are coming back to finish off our families by calling their gun shows ‘family friendly,’" Rose Ann Sharp, founder of NeverAgainCA, said. "It gives a perverse new meaning to 'women and children first.' For seven years the NRA has blocked any national laws to protect all citizens from gun violence."RELATED: Del Mar gun shows can continue for now, U.S. district court judge rulesAdvocates for the show say the event is meant to promote gun safety and curb violence."Gun shows are not the place where gun violence is created," Crossroads President Tracy Olcott says. "We're the ones who are educating about gun safety and I think when you have an environment where you can talk about it and educate people, I think that's an important part of curbing gun violence."In September 2018, the Del Mar Fairgrounds Board of Directors voted to suspend the Crossroads of the West show until the state developed new safety policies for gun shows. Crossroads appealed the suspension and was granted the right to return in June 2019.The show's contract runs through 2020.Schwartz admits they don't know what will happen to the show after the next year, but they're hopeful the court system will rule in their favor once again."We believe there is going to be some kind of court decision and there is the possibility that it will be delayed and have to move its way up through the court system," Schwartz said. "But we're very confident that the court's going to see that this type of discrimination against this group of people — that they simply consider undesirable — is not right. "The fairgrounds is a state-owned, regional asset and just because one city decides they don't like a culture, that doesn't mean that they can kick them out of town ... Del Mar doesn't get to dictate who they like and who they dislike." 3252

DEL MAR (CNS) - Mean Sophia, a 3-year-old filly, has died after suffering an injury while racing at Del Mar Racetrack -- the first equine fatality during a summer meet at the track since 2018.The horse stumbled coming out of the gate in Saturday's seventh race, broke her leg and was euthanized after track veterinarians determined that she could not be saved, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.Mean Sophia was owned by Sinnott Family Trust and trained by Peter Miller, according to the industry website Equibase. Her jockey was Ricardo. Gonzalez. She had eight career starts and one first-place finish. While there have been no racing deaths at Del Mar this year or last, four training deaths were recorded last summer, and four other horses have died at the track this summer -- two in training accidents and two listed for ``other'' causes.Officials with Del Mar and the California Horse Racing Board did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Some animal rights activists have urged the track to suspend racing this weekend due to the extreme heat wave plaguing Southern California.Sunday's high was expected to reach 95 degrees in Del Mar. There was no indication that heat played a role in Mean Sophia's death.Del Mar track spokesman Mac McBride has noted that in both 2018 and 2019, the Jockey Club's Equine Injury Database recognized Del Mar as the safest major track in the United States. 1416

Danish inventor Peter Madsen has been found guilty of the mutilation and murder of Swedish journalist Kim Wall, and sentenced to life in prison. He was also found guilty of the indecent handling of a corpse and "sexual relations other than intercourse of a particularly dangerous nature," evidenced by stab wounds inside and outside Wall's genital area.Wall, a promising 30-year-old journalist, was last seen boarding Madsen's submarine in Copenhagen on August 10 last year when she had planned to interview him for an upcoming article.Instead she disappeared, her torso washed up on August 21 on an island near Copenhagen. Her head and legs were found weeks later.Madsen consistently denied charges of murder and sexual assault, claiming Wall died by accident from carbon dioxide poisoning, although he admitted to dismembering her body and tossing it into the sea in a state of panic.Asked on Monday if he wanted to make a last statement before the jury went into deliberation, he said, "If anything, I am sorry about what happened."  1048
