With a second surge in COVID-19 cases underway, a family from the Midwest is sharing their harrowing story about surviving the coronavirus illness.A father, mother and son were all on ventilators, on life-support at one point.Chuck Drungelo was the first to feel sick right after Easter. He stayed home from work but his family, including his 81-year-old mother-in-law, all eventually landed in the hospital with the virus.“They said it looks like you have COVID pneumonia, so by Monday I was in the hospital and I gave it to my whole family,” said the dad.“How could this happen? How could all four members of their family get this? And it just shows you how contagious it is,” said Raeann Shedd, Drungelo’s sister.Chuck got the sickest. The ventilator wasn't enough. He was moved to an ECMO machine, which is life-support for the lungs and heart, for 19 days. He eventually got virus antibody plasma treatment that helped him turn a corner.“You can still hear my trachea. I got a hole from the feeding tube,” said Drungelo.Drungelo’s sister and his sister-in-law ended up having to make all the medical decisions while they were incapacitated. He was finally able to come home from a rehabilitation facility July 1.“It’s awful because your family is struggling, and you can’t be there for them. You can’t go to the hospital. You can’t hold their hand and talk to the doctor and look them in the eye. People think it’s their right to not wear a mask. I guess in a way it is, but we should do everything we can to save each other,” said Shedd.“My wife said the other day, if you don’t like wearing a mask, you’re not going to like wearing a ventilator,” said DrungeloAs you can imagine the family is facing a massive amount of medical bills. WILMINGTON, Del. – Joe Biden is calling for a nationwide mask mandate.“Every governor should mandate mandatory mask wearing,” said the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, citing estimates from experts who say a mandate could save 40,000 lives over the next three months.Biden’s remarks came after meeting with public health experts with newly announced running mate Kamala Harris on Thursday.He said they spoke about schools reopening, the distribution of possible vaccines, the existence of racial disparities, and the lack of testing capacity. White House adviser Stephen Miller is pushing to expedite a policy that could penalize legal immigrants whose families receive public benefits and make it more difficult to get citizenship, three sources familiar with the matter tell CNN.The White House has been reviewing the proposal since March at the Office of Management and Budget, which is the last stop for regulations before they are final. But concerns over potential lawsuits have delayed the final rule, and the draft has undergone numerous revisions, multiple sources say.The crux of the proposal would penalize legal immigrants if they or their family members have used government benefits -- defined widely in previous drafts of the policy.The law has long allowed authorities to reject immigrants if they are likely to become a "public charge" -- or dependent on government. But the draft rule in its recent forms would include programs as expansive as health care subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, as well as some forms of Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program, food stamps and the Earned Income Tax Credit.The rule would not explicitly prohibit immigrants or their families from accepting benefits. Rather, it authorizes the officers who evaluate their applications for things like green cards and residency visas to count the use of these programs against applicants and gives them authority to deny visas on these grounds -- even if the program was used by a family member.Two non-administration sources close to US Citizenship and Immigration Services, which would publish and enforce the proposal, say that Miller has been unhappy by the delay and has pushed the agency to finish it quickly. The sources say Miller even instructed the agency to prioritize finalizing the rule over other efforts a few weeks ago.Miller is an immigration hardliner within the administration, a veteran of Attorney General Jeff Sessions' Senate office who has been at President Donald Trump's side since the early stages of his presidential campaign.But two other administration sources downplayed the idea of any instructions to defer other policies until it's done, though they acknowledged Miller is keenly interested in the rule.The White House and Department of Homeland Security did not respond to a request for comment.Earlier this year, DHS spokesman Tyler Houlton said the administration is concerned about taxpayer dollars."The administration is committed to enforcing existing immigration law, which is clearly intended to protect the American taxpayer," Houlton said. West Virginia lawmakers reached a deal Tuesday that gives a 5% pay raise to all state employees, including striking teachers and school staff.The deal is intended to end a teachers' strike that has canceled nine consecutive school days across the state.
