SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It could take more than three weeks for out-of-work Californians to get unemployment insurance payments.The California Employment Development Department (EDD) tells 10News, during normal circumstances, an Unemployment Insurance (UI) claim takes approximately 21 days from filing to payment.Right now, the circumstances in California are anything but normal.According to a report from the state's Legislative Analyst's Office, "Given the extraordinary number of applications received recently, as well as the expectation that claims will continue to increase over the coming weeks, the Legislature should anticipate that first benefit payments will take much longer than 21 days."The report states similar delays occurred in the Great Recession. EDD tells 10News they are currently experiencing a large increase in claims filed in their programs and have staff working overtime to keep up with the demand."Given the unprecedented increase in UI claims due to COVID-19, we have taken several steps — working around the clock, including Saturdays and Sundays, and redirecting hundreds of staff to process UI claims — to ensure every Californian gets benefits as timely as possible. We do not expect any significant delays at this time. Should the situation change, and delays arise, we will notify the Governor's office, stakeholders, and the public as soon as possible," an EDD spokesperson told 10News."We're seeing impacts higher than what we saw at the Great Recession," said Andrew Picard with the San Diego Workforce Partnership.This week the organization put out a report on potential impacts of COVID-19 on employment in San Diego County.The report stated, "In the first three days of partial closures (March 16-18), Californians submitted 190,000 unemployment insurance claims — more than quadruple the weekly average — and the March 19 statewide order to shelter in place will bring more layoffs."Between March 16 to 22, the Workforce Partnership received notices or phone calls from 52 employers that are considering or have executed layoffs or work-hour reductions for a total of 3,865 impacted workers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It’s now been a week since the first Americans began their quarantines at MCAS Miramar after evacuating from the epicenter of the coronavirus, and all Charles Wasserburger wants is one thing: a pizza.“I’m just eating the food they have here and suffering through all the pizza and burger commercials they have on TV,” he said.To be clear, the Nebraska native says he’s not complaining about conditions on the base where he has been on a mandatory 14-day quarantine since Feb. 5. The government has provided all 232 evacuees at Miramar with televisions and cell phones to call or video chat with loved ones, free of charge. He hasn’t shown signs of the virus, but with two cases now confirmed among evacuees at Miramar, his wife in Omaha is a little worried on his behalf.“Even when you’re trying to keep a positive attitude, which he has done, there’s still going to be those days when you’re second guessing, “Could I be that person that comes down with that horrible thing next?” Fauniel Wasserburger said.The evacuees are allowed to mingle with each other in quarantine, although they’re supposed to stay six feet apart. But he said he empathizes with gyms that do not have usable outdoor space or a cooperative landlord.Even some gym owners that can move outside may not choose to do so. They say limits would force them to operate at an untenable loss, leaving them to choose between operating indoors in violation of public health orders or going out of business. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Lime can still operate its dockless scooters and bikes in San Diego, after the city's petition to revoke the company's permit was denied.Tuesday, a hearing officer reportedly refused the city's petition to revoke Lime's Shared Mobility Device (SMD) permit. The city argued that Lime violated municipal code on several occasions.“Lime is pleased with today’s decision and we appreciate the hearing officer for recognizing our compliance in San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Lifeguards removed a body found floating in the ocean off Sunset Cliffs Friday morning, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue.First responders were notified about 9:30 a.m. about the remains near Point Loma Ave. Lifeguards removed the body and transported it to their headquarters, officials said.The person had been in the water “a while”, according to San Diego Police.Officers told 10News they would be handling the discovery as a death report and not sending a homicide team to investigate.The person's identity and cause of death were not immediately available. 590
