SAN DIEGO - A hot air balloon with 14 passengers and a pilot on board made an unplanned landing in Rancho Pe?asquitos Sunday night.The balloon set down on a hillside at Pe?asquitos Drive and Del Diablo Way west of Interstate 15 about 7:15 p.m.The community jumped in to help, keeping the basket stable and helping the passengers exit safely, according to the San Diego Police Department.Witnesses helped the pilot bring the basket down to the street where it could be picked up by the owner, police said. The owner's name was not released.No one was injured.The NTSB will investigate the cause of the unplanned landing.  643

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thousands of refugees, immigrants and asylum seekers are finding a place to stay through the Safe Harbors Network, an organization which got its start at the Christ United Methodist Church in Normal Heights. Pastor Bill Jenkins began giving shelter to Haitian refugees back in 2009. And for quite a while the church was the only immigrant welcoming shelter in southern California. Eventually, the Safe Harbors Network was created. It's a growing collection of churches, organizations, and individuals that house refugees, immigrants and asylum seekers. Pastor Jenkins says he's seen an explosion of interest from people wanting to help in recent months after Trump's zero-tolerance immigration policy went into effect. Safe Harbors works in cooperation with ICE to give shelter to people awaiting their day in court.   886

SAN DIEGO (KGTV): A vacant lot next to the College-Rolando area library has become a dumping ground for homeless people and their trash. Now neighbors are fed up and want the owners to do something about it."My house is not even this trashy," says Erin Webster, who visits the library every day. "I keep my house clean. I think we should keep this whole community clean."The lot, at 6650 Montezuma Road, is owned by 52 Blue Falcon LLC, an investment group. They've filed paperwork with the city to build a 4-story Holiday Inn Express on the property. They're still waiting for final city approval."Everybody's trying to get through this process as quickly as possible," says Jeannette Temple with the Atlantis Group, who is a consultant on the project.In the meantime, homeless people have broken through the fence blocking off the lot. There are piles of mattresses, food, tents, electronics and other garbage piled up on every side.Temple told 10News the owners hired a cleaning company to come this week and remove the trash. She also says they have contracted with a security company to come twice a day and kick out anyone who doesn't belong.She says they welcome the complaints from the community and the owners want to know when things aren't right."We appreciate their eyes and ears because we don't want anything bad to happen at the property either," says Temple.Temple says the owners hope to start construction on the hotel at the start of 2019 and it should take about 18 months to finish.City of San Diego representatives say there are ways people can report problem properties in their neighborhood. Now, posts with the tag #IAmVanessaGuillen are circulating online, as people share their own stories of sexual assault in the military.Billiekai Boughton with the San Diego Women Veterans Network said any conversation like this can bring up hard memories for female veterans. She said while many women have a positive experience in the military, four out of five females report harassment or assault. The goal of her group is to support women through any of this pain. She says this is important in a community like San Diego which has about 26,000 female veterans.“For those of us who have been in the military and have had negative experiences, this can be a memory (sic) of feeling unsafe,” said Boughton.The group’s website says the most common request of women veterans in San Diego is to meet other women veterans. Their primary goal is to create a community for female military veterans, while also encouraging community service and policy change, which encourages and embraces the positive traits female vets have to offer.“Our friends remind us how strong we are. San Diego Unified School Board president and math teacher Kevin Beiser will introduce a resolution at Tuesday night's meeting demanding action from state and federal lawmakers pass stricter gun control laws."It's an opportunity for us parents students and teachers to speak in unison and call on our elected officials to do what we know is right and implement reasonable gun reform now, said Beiser ahead of the meeting. The board did something similar after the Sandy Hook school shooting back in 2012 but Beiser thinks it's worth stating again. And although it's not included in the resolution, Beiser expects the issue of arming teachers to come up at the meeting.Last week President Trump said he favored arming teachers to protect students. 763
