San Diego (KGTV)- CSU San Marcos is hoping to help low-income students enrolled in the chemistry and biochemistry department. The department received a nearly million grant. A new program is expected to lead to a higher graduation rate.“Students from our department, they get placed in graduate programs across the nation,” says Professor Robert Iafe. “A large percentage actually joins the workforce.”Iafe says it’s their goal to continue students down this path.The National Science Foundation awarded the department nearly million for scholarships for low-income students.“Training somebody from the community to go out into the community only makes it stronger.”Incoming freshmen will participate in the department’s new program, referred to as the Targeted Learning Community.“We’re going to have a community made up of about 30 students that start freshman year in the same classes and progress all throughout as a cohort, through their entire career as a student,” says Iafe.The money will help the students pay for tuition, books, and more.“They often have to find full-time jobs to support themselves,” says Iafe. “They often have to do other things to be equal to, and on top of, the other students that don’t have this financial burden.”The Targeted Learning Community is only for the fall’s incoming freshman, but the staff is hopeful it will become permanent. The department tried the program back in 2013, and students had a much higher percentage of graduating in four years.The Chemistry and Bio-Chemistry Department will be hosting live Zoom sessions for parents and high school seniors interested in the scholarship and Target Learning Community. SAN DIGEO (KGTV) - A former San Diegan who lives 3 miles from the site of a deadly, massive explosion in Beirut, Lebanon, is describing the terrifying moments of the blast. Elie Shammas and his family were inside their 6-story Beirut apartment. It all began just after 6pm, and it felt like an earthquake."In San Diego, feels like a rumble, but this was a jittery," said Shammas.Shammas, who taught at SDSU a decade ago, says all his locked windows swung open."The whole house was moving, and then the shock wave hit us. It was very loud. Outside, it was all dusty. I have three kids, who were jittery and scared," said Shammas.Shammas raced downstairs and snapped a photo of a huge smoke plume. Shammas says he can't help but recall Lebanon's bloody civil war."I lived through Lebanon through the war. I'm used to bombings and shellings, and this was like nothing I've seen before," said Shammas.Across the world, in San Diego, news of the blast hitting the Lebanese community hard."Just a shock. When you see it, you can't believe it's happening," said Shammas.Nabi Geha, who owns La Miche Kabobgee in Kearny Mesa, immediately called his niece and a cousin, who both live about four miles from the blast site. Both are okay but shaken."They woke up to huge impact. Their buildings were shaken. Cars lifted from one side street and thrown to other side," said Geha.Geha's anxiety over his family still lingers. He has several cousins who work near the blast site."Tried to contact them but haven't heard from them. You just worry," said Geha. 1551

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— Families and friends of crime victims shared stories of their loved ones at a healing circle.On October 11, 2015, Juan Carlos Munoz got the worst news of his life. "Three years ago, we got that phone call, that our son was murdered,” Munoz said. That single phone call changed the Munoz family forever. Their son, 18-year-old Juan Carlos Munoz Jr. was shot and killed while sitting in a parked car on Prospect Street in National City. “We didn't know what to do, we didn't know where to go get help, and we didn't know how to move on in life,” Munoz said. The shooter and driver got away. Lost in the confusion, heartbreak, and an endless cycle of ‘what-ifs’ the Munoz family found the group, Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice. “We don't want any parent to join this group, because that means they lost a loved one, but this group is needed for those victims have nowhere else to turn,” Munoz said. That is why he and his wife created the San Diego chapter. 'Loss' is the only criterion for membership into this exclusive group. But sadly it is growing. On the last day on national Crime Victims Right’s Week, the San Diego chapter welcomed all members. Instead of focusing on the loss, they shared stories of their loved ones to keep their memories alive. "He had a big heart, he loved people, he loved kids, feeding the homeless,” Munoz said about his son. “Junior” wanted to be a psychologist. But he never became one.Then last year, National City Police caught a break in the case. "November, we got that phone call that we've been waiting,” Munoz said. This was the other phone call that changed their lives. The two men responsible for killing Junior were arrested. "To hear that they were caught, it's a healing process,” Munoz said. He said it is a process that will never end. But talking about him reminds Munoz that Junior never really left his heart."He gives me that strength because when I feel very lonely and sad, I just feel that extra boost, like ‘You can do this dad!’“ Munoz said. 2032

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Some local entrepreneurs are getting help taking their businesses to the next level. The City of San Diego is making good on its commitment to bring business opportunities to under-served communities. This morning the City of San Diego opened the doors to its new business accelerator. "Connect All @ the Jacobs Center" provides entrepreneurs the tools they need to jump-start their business. Out of 60+ applicants, 13 were chosen for the inaugural cohort. Rosa Adam, the founder of Shukor Bella, started her natural hair and skin care line, inspired by her Ethiopian culture. But she needed help turning her dream into a reality. "There's so much more than just getting a product and putting it in a package and delivering it," says Adam. Kelvin Crosby came up with the "Smart Guider" to help the visually impaired, after losing his sight at 19 years old. "The dog is great, the cane is great, but I needed more," says Crosby. Connect All offers 4,300 square feet of co-working space, expert mentoring, and business management assistance — all free of charge. The program is a .5 million investment located in the heart of District 4. "We have been under-served," says City Council member Monica Montgomery. "If we don't have an economic component, then we don't have real success." The start-ups are committed to hiring low-to-moderate income San Diego residents. "It's nice to see that there is a program in place right now that's bringing back more of those mom and pop type of businesses," says Adam. "I do believe that the Connect All program will fix that."All applicants for the program have to be residents of the City of San Diego and serve businesses within the city limits. SAN DIEGO, California — An 18-year-old San Diego woman died and her 16-year-old cousin were injured in a crash on Interstate 10 on the way to the Coachella Music Festival in Indio, a friend told KGTV television station in San Diego.Federico Pedrazzini confirmed Ginevra Gallone-Latte died in the crash in Banning early Thursday morning. Her cousin Manuela was injured.The California Highway Patrol said 21-year-old Cesar Hernandezozuna was speeding when his BMW drifted onto the dirt shoulder. The driver tried to get back onto the freeway but went over an embankment and hit two trees, officers said.The crash split the car in two. Gallone-Latte was thrown and died at the scene, according to the CHP.Her cousin was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Hernandezozuna suffered a facial injury, according to the CHP.Both teens had previously attended La Jolla High School.Officers ruled out alcohol and drugs as contributing factors in the crash but had not determined the cause, the CHP said. 1019
