New studies confirm that multiple types of steroids improve survival for severely ill COVID-19 patients, cementing the cheap drugs as a standard of care.An analysis of pooled results from seven studies found that steroids reduced the risk of death in the first month by about one-third compared to placebo treatment or usual care alone in these seriously ill patients who needed extra oxygen.The work was led by the World Health Organization and published Wednesday by the Journal of the American Medical Association.Based on the results of the studies, the WHO has made two recommendations. The first, it says a strong corticosteroid therapy for 7 to 10 days should be used in patients with severe or critical COVID-19. The second, this therapy should not be used in patients with non-severe COVID-19, because it may increase the risk of death.“In contrast, in patients with non-severe COVID-19, based on data from 1,535 patients in one study, systemic corticosteroids may increase the risk of 28-day mortality,” researchers wrote.Compared to other treatments for COVID-19, these types of steroids are generally low cost, easy to administer and readily available across the globe.“Dexamethasone and prednisolone are among the most commonly listed medicines in national essential medicines lists; listed by 95% of countries. NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A federal judge says Louisiana must reinstate coronavirus pandemic voting plans used for summer elections rather than using a more restrictive plan approved by the Legislature. U.S. District Chief Judge Shelly Dick says the state must allow mail voting for people with conditions that make COVID-19 more dangerous, and their caretakers. She also ordered the expansion of early voting from seven days to 10 in November, but not in December. During his monthly call-in radio show, Gov. Rick said, and Traci agreed.Some things, like kids and grandkids, they expected."Really definitely they are the joys of life," Traci said.But some things, they didn't."It was terrifying in those small moments that was going on," Rick said. "And it was just scared me to death."One day, about two years ago, Rick was driving and got lost."For him to get lost in a place that he knew and not be able to find his way back was a huge red flag," Traci said.They went to a doctor, and just days before Christmas, at age 59, Rick was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's Disease."We didn't know what the future would hold," Traci said. "It is just such a scary thing."A new report out from the Alzheimer's Association shows the couple is not alone. More than 5.7 million people are currently living with the disease, and by 2050, that number is projected to rise to nearly 14 million."You know I think it's important for the public to understand the epidemic that is at our front door right now," said Amelia Schafer with the Alzheimer's Association of Colorado.Often, people are living with Alzheimer's and don't know it, Schafer said, and finding out can have big benefits. The report found early detection through annual doctor visits could save up to 15% percent of care costs."What we know is that early detection treating it earlier, potentially keeping someone in their home a little bit longer, can save hundreds of thousands for a family member over the lifetime," Schafer said.For Rick, early detection and working with the Alzheimer's Association helped preserve his quality of life."I couldn't do the things I'd like to do and it's coming back," Rick said.Now he's looking forward to the life he and Traci always imagined."I think more kids," he said. (AP) — Workers were cleaning up after high tides caused a 40-foot sailboat to capsize and also flooded the streets of Newport Beach late Friday, causing a traffic jam that kept vehicles from leaving the Balboa Peninsula for hours. The Orange County Register reported that eight bulldozers are dedicated to building back a sandy berm before high waters return Saturday night. Like many other Southern California beaches, the beach is closed to discourage crowds this holiday weekend. People managed to get off the sailboat before it capsized and turned into wreckage. 596
