HONG KONG, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang said on Saturday the government will not slack off in its fight against drugs, despite a 20 percent drop in the number of drug abusers aged below 21 in the first half of this year.Speaking at the 2010 Fight Crime Conference, Tsang said both the government and the community attach great importance to drug problems.Although the government's efforts in beating drugs have started to deliver results, it will not slack off and will continue to allocate money to anti-drug programs, he said.Praising law-enforcement officers' professionalism in maintaining law and order in Hong Kong, Tsang said the city's crime rate continued to stay at a low level.According to Chief Secretary Henry Tang, Hong Kong's crime situation for the year's first 10 months remained stable, with overall crime dropping 3.2 percent.

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday voiced its support for the new UN resolutions on lifting major sanctions against Iraq, and called on all parties in the country to foster national reconciliation through political dialogue and consultation.The statement came as Li Baodong, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, was speaking at an open Security Council meeting on Iraq, which adopted three resolutions to terminate major sanctions against Iraq, lift the restrictions on the Iraqi civilian nuclear program and end the oil-for-food program."China welcomes the adoption by the Security Council of resolutions which lift the sanctions imposed according to Chapter 7 of the Charter regarding the mass destructive weapons, missiles and civilian nuclear activities, which conclude the oil-for-food program and provide for appropriate arrangements relating to the development fund for Iraq," Li said.Li Baodong (front), the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, speaks during a United Nations Security Council high level meeting on Iraq at the UN headquarters in New York, Dec. 15, 2010. China "supports the Iraqi people in determining the future of their country autonomously," he stressed."Iraq is still confronted with a complex security situation. China condemns the terrorists attacks that have occurred recently in the country. We support the government and people of Iraq in their effort to preserve national security," said Li.Li also encouraged Iraq to enhance dialogue and cooperation with regional neighbors, find an appropriate solution to outstanding issues in a common effort to preserve regional peace and stability."We understand and support Iraq's aspiration for complete reintegration into the international community," said the ambassador.

  

BEIJING, Jan.14 (Xinhua) -- A Maldivian delegation visited southwest China's Yunnan province from Jan.11 to 14.During the visit, speaker of the Maldivian People's Majlis, Abdulla Shahid, held talks with directors of Yunnan's departments of tourism and commerce on Tuesday.Shahid said tourism was without a doubt the key industry of Maldives, adding that there are currently more than 10,000 Chinese tourists coming to Maldives every month."The opening flight between Kunming and Male, capitals of Yunnan and Maldives, increase high-level exchanges and commerce cooperation between the two countries", he saidTourism of China and Maldives strongly complement each other, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the Yunnan provincial People's Congress, Yan Youqiong, said during their meeting.
