SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego is known for its many picturesque views along the coastline, but some of the county's most scenic vistas are further east.San Diego County park rangers want to encourage locals to experience the serenity at some of their favorite places to hike. Many of their top spots offer a view from up high of rolling hillsides in Ramona, wildlife in its natural habitat near Julian, and unique vegetation surrounding Pala.All one needs is their phone and a joy for the outdoors (in addition to hiking essentials).Here's where you can find park rangers' picks and why each trek is a favorite:Wilderness Gardens (14209 Hwy 76, Pala, Calif.): "Take the Upper Meadow Trail 3.2 miles to a large grassy expanse with seasonal wildflowers. Also, look for the foundation of an old grist mill on the County Historic Resource Board’s list of historic places. The foundation is about 0.8 miles into the hike."Agua Caliente (39555 Great Southern Overland Stage Route of 1849, Julian, Calif.): "Keep your eyes open for bighorn sheep as you walk along the Marsh Trail, and snap a selfie about a half a mile in at a palm grove. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Residents in one City Heights neighborhood say they're upset their streets have become a constant "demolition derby."In the Ring video, a loud crashing sound is heard at night, before a frantic Yesenia Zepeda goes outside her home in late April. A hit-and run driver struck her girlfriend's car parked on Dwight Street near 47th Street. It is the second time her girlfriend's car has been struck outside the home in a 4-month period. "It's ridiculous and it's dangerous," said Zepeda. Last week, that danger played out again on her Ring camera, as a car collided with an SUV carrying a mother and a one-month-old baby, who appeared to be okay. "It was heartbreaking to see," said Zepeda. Zepeda fears more heartbreak may be just around the corner. "I hear screeching all the time," said Zepeda. She and other neighbors say crashes and close calls are a constant. "You really can't see anything at night," said Zepeda. Zepenia points to the dark street, speeding cars, a sharp turn, and one very narrow street. Other videos show just how tight that squeeze is. Sometimes, two-way traffic is not possible. Zepeda has contacted city officials, asking for streetlights, signage to help slow speeds, and turning a section of 47th Street into a one-way street. A city spokesperson issued the following statement: “In April 2017, a 24 hour traffic study was conducted and the data concluded that this location does not qualify for traffic calming measures. Although the data did not warrant traffic calming measures, in May 2017, the City installed 2 speed limit signs on Dwight and 47th Streets and painted a yellow centerline at the intersection of 47th and Dwight. The City will open a new case to re-evaluate this street segment for traffic calming and evaluate for street lights.” Corinne Wilson, Communications Manager for City Council President Georgette Gomez, issued the following statement: “Our office has been working with Yesenia. The corner was referred for a traffic study in 2017. Recently, we have requested that it also be specifically evaluated for additional signage and are requesting data from the SD Police Department regarding collisions. San Diego placed 11th among 50 other cities around the U.S., but America's Finest City wasn't alone. Los Angeles was ranked 2nd on the list. The company says all areas of the U.S. are prone to subterranean termites, but Pacific U.S. and coastal regions of the Southeast also have the threat of drywood termites. Subterranean termites swarm in the spring and summer while drywood termites usually swam in the late summer and fall. Orkin says termites find their way into homes because urbanization leaves fewer dead trees laying around. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego City Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry is calling for an audit of a city-leased building repeatedly shuttered over asbestos.The building at 101 Ash Street was closed Saturday and city employees were relocated for "the next few weeks" over asbestos violations, Bry said in a memo. Bry added that she received an update on June 17, 2019 that the project at the location remained "on schedule and within budget" after she requested an update 10 days prior."It is apparent that 101 Ash Street is neither on-time nor on-budget. San Diego businesses operating outdoors for the pandemic are making plans to stay dry.Since the pandemic started businesses in San Diego have had to get creative to stay afloat.Arthur Boia started PB Yogs as a way for yoga instructors to safely continue classes outdoors.“The thing with us is we’re yogi’s so we’re very flexible,” said Boia. “Whatever it takes.”They hold daily classes at Hospitality Point in Mission Bay where they implement temperature checks and social distancing.Boia says outdoor classes have been working out well under San Diego sunshine, but rain this weekend might pose some challenges.“If for some reason it starts raining and we have to cancel a class we’ll cancel it,” said Boia. “But as soon as it clears up, we’re gonna run right back out here and do yoga.”With rainy season underway, he’s looking for other ways to keep the yoga flowing.“When I was thinking of a tent, I was thinking to close off the back area so you can protect from the wind a little bit, but we also want to have good airflow for COVID reasons. As for the rain, that’s just something we’re gonna have to go by day-by-day," Boia said.Belmont Park is another business with outdoor operations.“We have our new go-kart track, our rock climbing wall, zip line, mini golf,” said Senior Marketing Manager Daniela Bower.The Belmont Park Harvest Walk event runs every Saturday through Nov. 14. Bower says they may have to cancel this weekend.“Even just for safety we can’t operate a lot of things when it’s raining,” said Bower.She adds after a year like 2020, wet weather will just add insult to injury.“It’s already been a struggle for us to be able to open in the first place, so it definitely kind of stings a little bit when we have to close for other reasons,” said Bower.Bower says they’ll make the call Friday afternoon on whether or not to cancel Saturday’s event.The City of San Diego is offering free sandbags in each City Council District. Residents just need to bring identification to receive up to 10 empty sandbags.
