LAKE ARTHUR, La. — Hurricane Delta's winds are so strong they are pulling away shingles from L'Banca Albergo Hotel, an eight-room boutique hotel in the Louisiana town of Lake Arthur.WATCH RECAP:“I probably don’t have a shingle left on the top of this hotel,” said owner Roberta Palermo. She said the electricity was out and, across the street, she could see pieces of metal coming off the roof of a 100-year-old building. Unsecured trash cans were flying around on the streets.Palermo is a long-time Louisiana resident who has grown up with hurricanes. “It’s been a long time since I’ve ridden one out. I don’t think I’ve ever been in one like this,” she said. “I think my building is pretty safe but it’s intense, for sure.”One of her guests was Johnny Weaver, a meteorology student from San Francisco State University. He was living at home in Tampa, Florida, while studying online and decided to travel to the region to see and study the storm firsthand.“There is a lot of power lines down all over the place, there’s ... really deep water in certain spots,” he said from the hotel’s front porch, adding, ‘’there is just shingles flying everywhere."According to the National Hurricane Center, the storm made landfall at 6 p.m. CT near Creole with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph. 1293

LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) - A strip mall that had fallen into disrepair and attracted squatters has been placed into receivership, according to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department.Located on the 7400 Block of Broadway, the property consisted of several buildings that had closed about a year ago after the city busted an illegal marijuana dispensary.But that’s when the real problems began.“Lots of police calls, criminal activities and police responses,” said Richardson Griswold, who was appointed as the receiver by a superior court judge on Friday.It came after the City of Lemon Grove had been granted a judgment against the owners of the property. The judgment required that the owners clean it up and properly secure it, but that was never completed.When the receiver arrived Friday afternoon, the Sheriff’s Department was called in to remove six people who had been living inside. One of them was found hiding in the attic. Four were taken into custody on existing warrants.Inside, Griswold said there was “heaps of trash, clothing, and no plumbing, so there was the smell of human feces and human urine.”He had already hired a crew to start clearing out the buildings and board up the access points. (KGTV) - Target representatives were on UC San Diego's campus this week talking to students about what they would like at an on-campus store.The company already has at least a dozen small-format stores on college campuses, including USC, UC Irvine, and UC Berkeley. Target says the stores cater to student's unique needs, providing food, apparel, dorm decor and essentials like toothpaste and body wash. While discussions are underway there is no concrete plan for Target to set up shop at UCSD. 530

One year after the Lancaster District Medical Director denied 13-year-old Trista Blasz the chance to wrestle on the JV team, writing "girls don't play boys sports in Lancaster Schools," Trista has won dozens of tournaments and competitions."It’s been like all wrestling. Non-stop wrestling," Trista said, "I’ve gotten first at like all of them. And just been like undefeated in like all of them. I think I’ve only lost a couple times at them." The Lancaster 8th grader has been traveling around the country competing in tournaments against both girls and boys.11-year-old Max McCarthy has witnessed Trista's success for five years. They have wrestled together at the Bison Wrestling Club for years. The two frequently win tournaments together, where he watches how competition views her."Sometimes they think, ‘Oh, she’s just a girl, who cares.' But some boys are like 'Oh, this is Trista. She’s good.' I wrestle her. I don’t treat her different," Max said.Just a year ago, Trista was treated different. A new review panel was then formed, clearing Trista to wrestle on the JV boys' team.A few months later, Trista was moved up to wrestle on the boys' varsity team. She also met her role model, WWE Hall of Famer Beth Phoenix, or Beth Copland. Copland attended college in Buffalo. This year, Trista's mom Danielle Blasz said it's a much easier process to have Trista evaluated to play on the high school boys team."They said she doesn’t have to take her APP test because her score was amazing last year. I also emailed them saying does she have to see the school doctor for approval. He said no. She just has to see her primary doctor," Blasz said.Next year, Trista will compete on the New York National Team."They travel all over the world. LAKE CHARLES, La. — A Confederate statue has fallen victim to Hurricane Laura.The South’s Defenders monument has stood since 1915 outside a courthouse in Lake Charles, Louisiana, where local authorities voted 10-4 this month to keep it in place.The statue was reportedly erected to honor Confederate soldiers from the area and other towns across the South. Critics call it a symbol of racism that glorifies slavery.But a Calcasieu Parish official said they asked for public comments, and got 878 written responses against relocating the monument, and only 67 in favor of moving it.Now the pedestal is empty, and the Confederate statue is in pieces on the ground, victim to a Category 4 hurricane that struck the city early Thursday. 740
