WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tuesday is National Voter Registration Day, a day dedicated to encouraging Americans to register to vote or check to make sure their registration is up to date. The civic holiday is celebrated on the fourth Tuesday in September, a little over two months before the general election held. This year, Election Day is on Nov. 3.Every year, the organization behind the holiday says millions of Americans find themselves unable to vote because they miss their registration deadlines, don’t update their registration, or aren’t sure how to register. This year, volunteers and organizations from across the nation will come together to create a broad awareness of registration opportunities to reach thousands of voters who may not register otherwise.Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, most states have expanded their vote-by-mail opportunities, but in a majority of states, you still need to register and request absentee ballots by certain dates.Click here for the registration and absentee ballot deadlines for each state. The U.S. Postal Service, which will play a huge roll in this election, strongly recommends that voters request their mail-in ballots at the earliest point allowable, but no later than 15 days prior to Election Day.The USPS also recommends that voters mail their ballots at least one week prior to their states' due dates to allow for timely receipt by election officials. If you don’t want to rely on the USPS to deliver your ballot to election officials, many communities provide locations where you can drop your ballot off yourself.Click here to register to vote in your state. 1625

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A deadline set Tuesday under federal law essentially locks in President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, even though President Donald Trump is still falsely claiming he won reelection.Outlined in the Electoral Count Act of 1887, the safe harbor deadline falls six days before the Electoral College meets to formally cast votes for the president based on the popular vote in each state. This cycle, that vote will take place on Dec. 14.Other than Wisconsin, every state appears to have met the safe harbor deadline, which means Congress has to accept the electoral votes that will be cast next week and sent to the Capitol for counting on Jan. 6.By the end of the day Tuesday, every state is expected to make its election results official, with 306 electoral votes being awarded to Biden and 232 going to Trump. A total of 270 votes are needed to claim the White House. Those votes will elect Biden as the country’s next president. It’s called a safe harbor provision because it’s a kind of insurance policy by which a state can insulate its electoral votes against challenges in Congress by finishing up certification of the results and any state court legal challenges by the deadline. 1205

WASHINTON, D.C. -- Senate Democrats are unveiling a plan to extend additional unemployment benefits. This is for the extra 0 every week, on top of what states already offer for unemployment. The new proposal would decrease the added benefit as the unemployment rate drops. The Economic Policy Institute supports that plan, saying the additional benefit should stay in place as long as needed.“People are really, really uncertain about how this is going to unfold over the coming months, so putting some arbitrary end date on any provisions related to supporting the economy and the people in it during this crisis makes no sense,” said Heidi Shierholz, Senior Economist and Director of Policy at the Economic Policy Institute. The institute tells us the expansion makes a huge difference, not just for the individual, but for all of us. It estimates if it cuts off at the end of July, that could cost the U.S. 5 million jobs over the next year. That's because less spending creates a further drag on the economy. However, Republicans say the expanded benefit gives people a reason to not go back to work. Some studies have found the economy could actually be worse off if people don't get working again. The American Enterprise Institute agrees, saying the move was just meant to get through the initial lockdown.“This is becoming less of a, the pandemic caused us to initiate lockdowns and people are at home, and now it's just we have a large number of unemployed people, what should we do to assist them, and 0 addition to unemployment checks in a bad economy is a really unprecedented step,” said Matt Weidinger with the American Enterprise Institute. The group says extending the benefits could set that precedent for Congress to act similarly for any future recessions. 1781

WASHINGTON (AP) — The top U.S. military officer is telling Congress that the U.S. armed forces will have no role in carrying out the election process or resolving a disputed vote. The comments from Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, underscore the extraordinary political environment in America, where the president has declared without evidence that the expected surge in mail-in ballots will make the vote “inaccurate and fraudulent,” and has suggested he might not accept the election results if he loses.Trump’s repeated complaints questioning the election’s validity have triggered unprecedented worries about the potential for chaos surrounding the election results. Some have speculated that the military might be called upon to get involved, either by Trump trying to use it to help his reelection prospects or as, Democratic challenger Joe Biden has suggested, to remove Trump from the White House if he refuses to accept defeat. “I believe deeply in the principle of an apolitical U.S. military,” Milley said in written responses to several questions posed by two Democratic members of the House Armed Services Committee. The military has adamantly sought to tamp down that speculation and is zealously protective of its historically nonpartisan nature. 1292
