Amazon just raised its minimum wage to , but that's not enough for some progressive politicians.Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders sent a letter to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos on Tuesday scolding the company for allegedly distributing a 45-minute instructional video to managers at recently-acquired grocery chain Whole Foods on how to defuse union organizing."Workers' rights do not stop at the minimum wage, and raising the pay of your lowest-paid workers, while important, does not give you a free pass to engage in potentially illegal anti-union behavior," Massachusetts Democrat Warren and Vermont independent Sanders wrote.Amazon did not immediately return a request for comment. The letter comes as Warren prepares for an all-but-certain bid for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. She has ramped up travel to early-voting states and told a crowd at a Massachusetts town hall two weeks ago that after the midterms she will "take a hard look at running for president."Warren this week released the results of a DNA test intended to combat President Donald Trump labeling her "Pocahontas" over Warren being listed in 1980s and 1990s law school faculty handbooks as Native American. Her political team has also turned Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's 2017 admonishment that Warren was warned against reading a letter from Coretta Scott King criticizing Jeff Sessions on the Senate floor, but "nevertheless, she persisted," into a slogan. It handed out printed "PERSIST" signs at Netroots Nation, a major progressive gathering, in New Orleans in August. The aggressive moves are intended to make Warren's intentions clear to progressives -- and demonstrate that she is capable of fighting powerful Republicans — as Democrats prepare for a wide-open presidential nominating contest that more than two dozen mayors, governors, senators and House members are considering entering. In announcing its minimum wage, Amazon said it had "listened to our critics." Most prominent among them was former Democratic presidential candidate Sanders, who introduced legislation aimed squarely at charging the Seattle e-commerce giant for any safety net benefits its employees used. The letter to Bezos refers to a video?originally reported by Gizmodo in early September that allegedly told team leaders how to recognize signs of unrest among workers, and provided arguments for why a union would not be in the interests of the company or its workforce."Our business model is built upon speed, innovation, and customer obsession—things that are generally not associated with unions," the video said, according to Gizmodo. "When we lose sight of those critical focus areas we jeopardize everyone's job security: yours, mine, and the associates'."The senators' letter raised concerns that, if genuine, the video would constitute violations of the National Labor Relations Act, the law that protects worker organizing. Specifically, suggestions that a facility might close down if employees organize and any attempt to spy on union activity could be grounds for a complaint to the National Labor Relations Board. No recent charges appear on the Board's website, and a call to the Board was not immediately returned. The senators requested the full video distributed by Amazon to Whole Foods managers, any other materials pertaining to organizing activities and a list of law firms and consultants the company may have retained to help tamp down labor unrest. The Wall Street Journal reported in September that a nascent union organizing campaign was underway at Whole Foods.Unions are relatively rare in the industry, representing only 5% of retail workers in 2017, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.Warren, long a critic of large banks and corporations, also sent a letter Tuesday taking hedge funds to task for their roles in the bankruptcy of Toys 'R' Us, which resulted in the loss of 33,000 jobs. 3980

ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) - A Frost Advisory was issued for San Diego County Valleys, prompting three key preparations to protect your pets, pipes and plants. The advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. Saturday through 8 a.m. Sunday, in cities including Escondido, El Cajon, San Marcos, La Mesa, Santee, and Poway.Ways to protect your plants is wrapping them before sundown, to retain heat, and watering trunks of trees with warm water the next morning.Wrapping pipes in towels to retain heat keeps them from freezing. In areas that see a hard freeze, leaving the faucet dripping overnight is one way to keep the pipes from freezing.Always remember to bring pets indoors. If you have a community cat, they do need shelter. The Humane Society explains what you can do to help. 774

After the rapid roll out in the U.K. of Pfizer and BioNtech’s COVID-19 vaccine, Britain’s Medical and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency is warning people who have severe allergies, like those who have to carry around an adrenaline shot, to refrain from getting the vaccine for now.“Two individuals seemed to have a severe allergic reaction,” Dr. William Moss said.Dr. Moss is the executive director of International Vaccine Access Center at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He says we need to better understand what those two people had an allergic reaction to.“This isn’t kind of completely out of the blue," Dr. Moss said. "These kinds of things are rare events, but they sometimes occur, and it’s usually to some kind of component or chemical in the vaccine that the individual’s immune system is responding to in a very abnormal way, creating this very intense allergic reaction.”Even though it’s rare, Dr. Moss says it’s important to provide clarity on issues like this so people can trust the information they’re getting is reliable and true. Otherwise, there’s room for misinformation to spread. Many myths have already been circulating online about the vaccine.Myths include things like Dr. Anthony Fauci will personally profit from a COVID-19 vaccine, or government food stamps will be denied to those who refuse COVID-19 vaccines, or the mRNA vaccines being developed for COVID-19 will alter human DNA.“The MRNA vaccine, that doesn’t change our DNA in any way," Dr. Moss said. "These are not genetically altering vaccines. That Messenger RNA stays in the cytoplasm. It’s basically just a code for our bodies to make the spike protein of the SARS coronavirus-2 and then induce our immune response.”One internet resource that can help you discern which sources offer actual facts is NewsGuard. The company has a team of journalists who review and rank the credibility of sources to help people know whether or not they can trust the information is true.NewsGuard Health Editor John Gregory says each myth has a tiny grain of truth that is taken out of context and exaggerated. For example, another popular myth is that the COVID-19 vaccine will use microchip surveillance technology created by Bill Gates-funded research.“Bill Gates did fund research into what is not a microchip, but what was supposed to be a detectable tattoo that would help track vaccines in the third world where there’s not robust medical records so you could just scan something, and a doctor would be able to tell ‘ok this child got this vaccine,’" Gregory said. "It’s not a tracking device because you can’t track it unless you’re in direct contact with the person, and it also had nothing to do with the pandemic.”Dr. Moss says the microchip myth sounds like a sci-fi movie."These are vaccines," Dr. Moss said. "These are biological products that are designed to produce an immune response against the SARS-Coronavirus-2 so that individuals who are exposed to the virus either don’t get infected – that would be ideal – or at least are protected from developing severe disease, hospitalization and death.”Living in a society where we’re constantly bombarded with new information right at our fingertips, how are we supposed to know who we can trust?“The best thing people can do is know more about the sources of information that they are absorbing about the vaccine," Gegory said. "What their history and what their agenda may be when it comes to previous disease outbreaks and previous vaccines.”Dr. Moss says even though it’s been done in a quick manner, it’s critical people understand these vaccines have gone through a rigorous scientific process to be approved.“Vaccines are going to be key, a key tool in our toolbox to getting out of this pandemic.” 3771

A woman who was seen slapping a police officer as she was carried out of a University of Miami football game has been charged with felony battery on a police officer and misdemeanor disorderly conduct, the Associated Press reported. According to Local 10, Miami-Dade Metro Police received the video shortly after Saturday's incident, and was in the process of investigating. In the video, Bridget Freitas, who was dressed in a Miami Hurricanes shirt, was being carried away by several police officers. She than slapped one of the officers in the face. The officer then responded by delivering a huge punch to the woman's face, to the surprise of the crowd. Video of the incident quickly spread Saturday night on social media.   770
