Prosecutors say multimillionaire Jeffrey Epstein's wealth makes him a risk to flee the country or to tamper with the investigation, so he should be detained ahead of his sex trafficking trial. But Epstein's lawyers say he has scrupulously followed the terms of his 2008 plea deal over the past decade-plus and is no longer a danger to anyone. They argued he should be allowed to live pre-trial at his Manhattan mansion -- a home that prosecutors say would be a "gilded cage."The two arguments came to a head in federal court on Monday for Epstein's bail hearing, where each side was given 20 minutes to lay out their positions.US District Court Judge Richard M. Berman said he plans to make a ruling on Thursday. A pre-trial services report filed on Monday recommended that Epstein be detained, Berman said in court Monday.Epstein, 66, has pleaded not guilty to charges of sex trafficking of minors and conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking of minors in alleged incidents between 2002 and 2005.The indictment says that he paid girls as young as 14 to have sex with him at his Upper East Side home and his estate in Palm Beach, Florida, worked with employees and associates to lure the girls to his residences and even paid some of his victims to recruit other girls for him to abuse. The hedge fund manager was arrested July 6 at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey aboard his private jet, which had just landed from Paris. He is currently being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, a federal detention center in lower Manhattan.Monday's bail hearing has provided further details about Epstein's past and the extent of his wealth, both of which are shrouded in mystery. In court, prosecutors said that investigators going through Epstein's possessions found an expired foreign passport issued in the 1980s that showed Epstein's photo under a different name. The passport also listed his residence as Saudi Arabia. In addition, prosecutors said they had obtained financial records confirming that Epstein is worth more than 0 million, including a single account with over 0 million. Epstein's defense submitted a financial summary of his assets under seal, and Judge Berman said he was inclined to make it public.Defense highlights 14-year clean recordShortly after his arrest, federal agents executing a search warrant of Epstein's mansion in New York seized a "vast trove" of lewd photographs of young-looking women or girls, prosecutors said in a court filing. That "substantial collection of photographic trophies," prosecutors argued in their bail filing, demonstrated the ongoing danger he poses to the public and is a key reason why he should be detained. The federal charges in the indictment are similar to those Epstein avoided more than a decade ago when he signed a plea agreement with federal prosecutors in Miami. As part of the agreement, he pleaded guilty to two state prostitution charges in 2008, served 13 months in prison and registered as a sex offender.A November 2018 3009

Rapid City, S.D. — South Dakota has a meth problem, and it wants you to know about it.The state came out with a new slogan last week, and it's got people buzzing. “It’s everywhere, it’s in Rapid City, it’s in small-town South Dakota. It’s in Belle Fourche, it’s in Buffalo," said Bryan Hentkowski, who is recovering from his meth addiction. “It touches everybody, in one way or the other,” said Tim Kelly, who lives in Rapid City, South Dakota. “Your neighbors are doing it, people’s parents are doing it, it’s everywhere,” Hentkowski said.Hentkowski lives in Rapid City, South Dakota. He is in rehab recovering from his meth addiction — and he’s far from the only one. Meth arrests in South Dakota have tripled since 2013. But the state's not ignoring the problem. In fact, they’re on it. The state's new slogan show's people saying, "I'm on meth," and, "I'm on meth too." There’s no doubt the state's new campaign is effective. people are buzzing about it from coast to coast. “It did in 24 hours what we’ve been trying to do for several years and that is, raise awareness of the methamphetamine crisis in South Dakota,” said Kevin Thom, the sheriff in Pennington County. He likes the campaign. "You know some of it is kind of mean spirited, the comments, frankly there’s some pretty hilarious and creative memes that are out there on the internet. I think it’s clearly a net positive,” Thom said. “It’s free, it’s free when people are talking about you on social media and advertising cost a lot of money,” said Vicki Lane, a professor of marketing at University of Colorado Denver. She says the state is using a controversial slogan to get people talking about the problem. “Controversy in particular has a risk that it will backfire. Because it is controversial that people will have a negative perception or negative reaction or negative attitude and maybe even a negative emotion,” Lane said. And there's definitely some of that to be found in Rapid City. “Do you want my honest opinion? I think it's stupid," Hentkowski said. “The PR man ... he was probably on meth when he did it,” said Joe Utter, who lives in Rapid City. “Could be a stroke of genius to get people talking about it, but on the other hand, it’s gonna make us look a little stupid," Kelly said. “Initially, I thought it was pretty ridiculous, it does stop and make you think. There is a meth problem in South Dakota,” said Kristin Kirsch, from Spearfish, South Dakota. Broadhead, the company that created the campaign for the state, said in a statement, “We are proud of this work, and as far as we’re concerned, the campaign is doing its job. It’s generating conversation, it’s soliciting all kinds of reactions and, yes, it’s making people uncomfortable.” While the conversation might be getting started for people at home, it’s been the reality for a while for Pennington County Deputy Dustin Meyer. “We’re going to go serve some warrants on some subjects that are felony drug charges, specifically possession of methamphetamine,” Meyer said. The Pennington County sheriff's department averaged 23 meth arrests a week last year, a third of the total arrests in the state. Thom appreciates the hard work of his deputies, but he knows it’s not the answer. “A stronger focus on the prevention, a stronger focus on the treatment," Thom said. "I mean, you have to have vigorous enforcement, and we’ve done a good job because we’re arresting people in record numbers, but it hasn’t put a dent in the problem.” 3505

Shoppers these days are abandoning expensive stores at the mall, evidenced by the thousands of store locations closing in the past year. Many are turning to bargain stores like Marshall's, TJ Maxx and the biggest bargain retailer of all: dollar stores. But which provides the best bang for your buck? Shoppers love the dealsWe decided to compare stores in one central shopping district, where Dollar Tree, Family Dollar and Dollar General are all located within a half mile of each other. At Dollar Tree, Amy McInehimer and her daughters were stocking up on pool supplies."They had all sorts of floaties and inflatable things," she said. "It's crazy, just a dollar. And anywhere else it's 10 bucks."Lisa Webster was buying goods for a girl's sleepover. Her haul included beach balls, glow sticks, flashlights and M&M's.And all those supplies cost just each. "I think it's great because it usually lasts just one summer," Webster said. But dollar stores are for more than toys and beach balls. At any of them there is a good chance you can find Glad bags, Ajax cleaner, Wonder Bread, drain cleaner, picture frames and lots of party supplies, all for either or just slightly more.Shopper Nicole Rivera says she saves hundreds of dollars a month on her household basics. "It's way cheaper because you get everything for a buck," she said. Some now charge much more than You may notice that inflation has taken a toll at some dollar stores, where you'll find a lot of products at and even .That's not the case at Dollar Tree, where everything is still just (though it is now experimenting with higher prices in some markets).Travel and shopping blogger 1677
