SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Association of Governments will begin a weekend closure of rail service between Solana Beach and downtown San Diego Saturday to continue bluff stabilization work in Del Mar.The work window is scheduled from just after midnight Saturday morning to 5 a.m. Monday along the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo rail corridor, which serves the North County Transit District, Metrolink, Amtrak commuter rail companies and the freight line BNSF.SANDAG and NCTD crews will install roughly 80 feet of concrete along the rail corridor from Sea Grove Park to 15th Street, which will act similarly to a retaining wall to protect against bluff collapse and washout, which occurred during a period of heavy rain last month. Previous projects have resulted in the installation of more than 200 concrete support pillars along a nearly two-mile stretch to stabilize the cliffs.RELATED:Del Mar bluffs near train tracks under 24/7 surveillanceTravel nightmare for train passengers after Del Mar bluff collapseRepair timeline moved up for Del Mar bluffsSANDAG expects to begin a .8 million stabilization early next year, which will include the installation of support piles and the replacement and rehabilitation of drainage along the bluffs. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The death toll in an outbreak of hepatitis A in San Diego has reached 16, and 421 people have been sickened with the disease, the county Health and Human Services Agency reported Tuesday. The figures are associated with an outbreak that began last November and has struck the homeless population and users of illicit drugs particularly hard.RELATED: San Diego to begin spraying down streets to control Hepatitis A outbreakPatients who contracted hepatitis A, which attacks the liver, in a manner unrelated to the outbreak aren't included in the statistics. The new numbers were released the same day the city of San Diego began a pilot program to keep 14 public restrooms in Balboa Park open 24 hours a day. Under direction from county health, the city on Monday began washing down streets and sidewalks in the East Village with a bleach formula. Also, around 40 hand-washing stations were set up around the city -- concentrated in areas where the homeless congregate -- around the beginning of the Labor Day weekend.RELATED: City and County of San Diego provide handwashing, vaccines to stop Hepatitis A outbreakOn Wednesday, a proposal to declare an emergency in San Diego over the outbreak and a lack of shelter space is scheduled to go before the City Council's Select Committee on Homelessness.Councilman David Alvarez suggested the declaration nearly two weeks ago, calling for immediate action because of the fatalities. In response, the office of Mayor Kevin Faulconer said the declaration was unnecessary, since the city was taking steps to combat the illness.County officials, meanwhile, are continuing a program of vaccinations, which are considered to be the best way to prevent hepatitis A. The disease is spread by contact with microscopic amounts of infected feces and via sexual transmission.RELATED: Hepatitis A outbreak ravages San Diego homeless populationMore than 7,000 shots have been given to people considered to be at-risk of acquiring the disease, and over 19,000 shots given out in total, according to the HHSA.In January's annual tally of the area's transient population, 5,619 homeless individuals were counted in the city of San Diego, a 10.3 percent increase from last year. Of those, 3,231 were living on the streets. 2287

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council voted unanimously, 9-0, today in favor of building a new fire station at UC San Diego. The fire station is the first on the campus and will serve UCSD students, faculty, staff and the school's surrounding neighborhoods. The station will be located in the campus' northwest corner at the intersection of North Torrey Pines Road and Northpoint Driveway."UC San Diego is pleased that the San Diego City Council has approved a fire station to be built on the campus," UCSD Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla said. "We look forward to working together with the City of San Diego on this vital project. UC San Diego is significantly growing its enrollment to make the university one of the nation's premier residential campuses and it is critical that we address life safety issues as part of our growth."More than 36,000 students currently live on UCSD's campus, with the school planning to add another 20,000 student beds by 2022. According to city officials, the rapid campus growth has led to an increase in incidents in an area that is currently outside the area that existing fire stations can cover.According to UCSD and the city, the new fire station will include three fire apparatus vehicle bays, administrative offices, a kitchen and dining area, a training room, an exercise room and crew quarters. The 10,500-square-feet facility will accommodate 12 San Diego Fire Department crew members once built. 1453

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County rose seven-tenths of a cent today to .567, its highest amount since Aug. 26, 2015.The average price has risen 21 times in the past 26 days, increasing 13.3 cents, including seven-tenths of a cent on Thursday, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service. The average price is 2.1 cents more than one week ago, 15.9 cents higher than one month ago and 54.9 cents greater than one year ago. It has risen 44.5 cents since the start of the year."Underlying gasoline wholesale prices have wavered within a range of about 10 cents for about the past month, allowing pump prices to remain relatively stable for this time of year," said Jeffrey Spring, the Automobile Club of Southern California's corporate communications manager."Barring any major incidents affecting supply or oil prices, it seems unlikely right now that price averages will push as high as a gallon this spring." 1014
