Judge Amy Coney Barrett's Supreme Court confirmation hearings concluded Thursday with the Senate Judiciary Committee setting a full Senate vote to seat her on the Supreme Court on Oct. 22.Should more than half of Senators vote to confirm Barrett next week — and the Republican-controlled Senate appears to have the votes to do so — there will be time to seat the judge on the Supreme Court ahead of the 2020 election on Nov. 3.Democrats attempts to delay the vote reached a peak on Thursday, as Democratic senators on the committee opened the Thursday by filing motions to push back a committee vote.Thursday's portion of the hearing opened with only one Democrat — Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois — in the room. Durbin argued that a quorum was not present and that the hearing should be delayed. The Republican-controlled committee quickly voted to change the rules to proceed with the hearing and set the date for a vote on Barrett's confirmation for Oct. 22.Following that vote, Democratic committee members called for motions to delay a vote on Barrett's confirmation. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Connecticut, called the process "rushed," and Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minnesota called it a "sham." Republicans, like Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, offered a defense of the proceedings, saying they were within historical precedent.Graham allowed all lawmakers who wish to speak on the proposed motions to delay a vote will have the opportunity to do so, but added that he "hated it" for the witnesses who were scheduled to speak at the hearing later on Thursday. Witness testimony did not begin until nearly two hours after they were originally scheduled to start. The witnesses are to speak to Barrett's character before committee members give their closing statements. They include apolitical experts from the American Bar Association and the Federal Judiciary, as well as witnesses called by both Democrats and Republicans.Witnesses from the American Bar Association said they deemed Barrett qualified to serve on the Supreme Court, basing their decision solely on her judicial acumen.Witnesses called by Democrats argued that Barrett's nomination threatens several precedents, like legal abortion, public healthcare and LGBGTQ+ rights. Witnesses called by Republicans spoke to Barrett's personal character and her reputation as a "textualist" and "Constitutional originalist."Barrett was present at the hearing for any part of Thursday's hearings.Throughout her two days of questioning, Barrett attempted to mostly avoid sharing her views on hotly-debated judicial topics like abortion and public healthcare. However, President Donald Trump has said in the past that he would only nominate a judge to the court who would work to overrule the Affordable Care Act and abortion protections provided in Roe v. Wade, and Barrett's past opinions make it clear that she fits those qualifications. Graham himself lauded Barrett as an "unabashedly pro-life" and "conservative" woman during Wednesday's hearing. 3001

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A new poll released after the Aug. 8 primary shows incumbent U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill (D – Missouri) in a tie with Republican Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley. It is a seat the Democrats need to hang onto to have any chance of gaining control of the U.S. Senate. Currently, Republicans hold a 51-49 advantage, with VP Mike Pence able to cast the tiebreaker. The poll, conducted Aug. 8-9 by Missouri Scout, shows the race tied, which is in line with a series of polls conducted in the race since this spring. Both candidates received 47 percent of the vote, with six percent of those polled saying they were undecided. The poll also asked respondents their thoughts on amending the state constitution to permit the use of medical marijuana, with 54 percent of respondents approving.Roughly 60 percent of respondents also said the state should increase its minimum wage to .60 per hour, with a stair-step increase of Joseph Laurinaitis, a former professional wrestler who went by the name Road Warrior Animal, has died at the age of 60.A tweet from the wrestler’s official Twitter account confirmed his passing Wednesday morning and asked for thoughts and prayers. At this time, we would like to confirm the passing of Joseph Laurinaitis aka Road Warrior Animal at the age of 60. WWE extends its condolences to Laurinaitis' family, friends and fans. https://t.co/hurorEDVff— WWE (@WWE) September 23, 2020 In a statement, the WWE called Animal “one of the most intense Superstars to ever step into the squared circle.”He spent a majority of his wrestling career alongside his tag team partner, Hawk, according to the WWE.“Together, they formed what was arguably the most successful, popular and feared tandem of all time — The Road Warriors,” the WWE wrote. The wrestling organization says The Road Warriors thrived in multiple stints with the WWE, where they were also known as The Legion of Doom. The wrestler's son, James Laurinaitis, was also an athlete. He played football for Ohio State University and then went on to play in the NFL for the St. Louis Rams and the New Orleans Saints. The wrestling community has begun to react to Animal's passing online.RIP Animal, love you my brother, I know you and Hawk have a lot of unfinished business to take care of! God speed and blessings to your beautiful family, one love4Life. HH— Hulk Hogan (@HulkHogan) September 23, 2020 My friend @RWAnimal has passed away pic.twitter.com/lSf997OjIy— Tommy Dreamer (@THETOMMYDREAMER) September 23, 2020 2032.85 per year to per hour by 2023.The poll was conducted by TJP Strategies, a Democratic consulting firm, on behalf of Missouri Scout, with 1,785 likely 2018 general election votes and a sampling error margin of plus or minus 2.3 percentage points.Missouri is not the only traditionally red state that Democrats hold a US Senate seat in. The seats in North Dakota, Indiana and West Virginia could also be turnovers from the Democrats to the Republicans. For the Democrats to regain control of the Senate, not only would it need to hold on in traditionally red states, but also take two seats from the Republicans. The two best possibilities for the Democrats to make gains in the Senate are in Arizona and Nevada.  1692

Johnson & Johnson's stock fell as much as 11 percent on Friday — on track for its worst day since 2002 — after a Reuters report said the company knew for decades that asbestos was in its baby powder. The company has been grappling with lawsuits alleging some of its talcum powder products caused cancer. But the Reuters report cites documents and other evidence that indicate company executives, mine managers, scientists, doctors and lawyers knew about the problem and failed to disclose it to regulators or the public. The plunge in J&J's shares rippled across Wall Street. J&J is among the most widely held stocks and it's also a member of the Dow.Reuters said it examined documents, including depositions and trial testimony, that show that from at least 1971 to the early 2000s, J&J's raw talc and finished baby powders sometimes tested positive for small amounts of asbestos, a human carcinogen that can cause cancer.According to Reuters, the documents also depict successful efforts to influence US regulators' plans to limit asbestos in cosmetic talc products and scientific research on the health effects of talc.J&J has responded, saying "Simply put, the Reuters story is an absurd conspiracy theory, in that it apparently has spanned over 40 years, orchestrated among generations of global regulators, the world's foremost scientists and universities, leading independent labs, and J&J employees themselves."Reuters published an emailed statement from J&J Vice President of Global Media Relations Ernie Knewitz said: "This is all a calculated attempt to distract from the fact that thousands of independent tests prove our talc does not contain asbestos or cause cancer. Any suggestion that Johnson & Johnson knew or hid information about the safety of talc is false."On July 19, 2002, shares of Johnson & Johnson tumbled 16 percent as federal regulators investigated a former employee's allegations of false record-keeping at a plant that made an anemia drug linked to serious side effects.d. 2051
