NEW YORK -- A time of year with so much light and happiness feels a bit different this year.“Oh I thought Christmas was canceled... Are you saying it’s still on?” New York sculptor Jim Rennert said.Rennert says humor is what gets him through difficult times, like when he had a bike accident.“I broke my collarbone, separated my shoulder, took me 45 minutes to get up," Rennert said. "I was chuckling on the ground about it; that’s how I deal with stress.”He hopes to bring that humor to others this holiday season through his work.“Bringing a little bit of light, a little bit of levity, having something that people can smile about, even if it’s for a moment as they’re walking down the street and they see one of my sculptures goes a long way right now,' Rennert said.The weekend before Christmas, quite a few of Rennert’s sculptures were installed across New York City.“You can’t go to museums, you can’t go to art galleries freely like you could before – they’re limited on their hours and their attendance – so why not put the work out and allow people to enjoy it on the street,” Rennert said.Each sculpture resonates with people in the business world. He was part of that world as a stockbroker before he found his calling as an artist at the age of 34.“I just went back to what I had been thinking about all those experiences in business that were challenging, and I found out there was an audience for that. I don’t know that anybody had ever done that before," Rennert said.His audience has grown this year as the world has been struggling with a whole new set of challenges. He feels inspired to honor essential workers and connect with people through the mutual feeling of isolation.“One is a guy in a bird cage called "Caged but not Conquered," so I got a figure as if he’s a bird in this cage just waiting to get out,” Rennert said.Rennert says we have to hold onto hope and know that things will get better. He says art in a time of so much despair is one way to bring light to the darkness.“It might make them forget about what’s going on which would be kind of nice for a minute, ya know?”Rennert said. 2128

NEW YORK (AP) — Gap Inc. is moving away from the nation's malls. The San Francisco-based brand was for decades a fixture at shopping malls around the country. Now it says it's closing 220 stores by early 2024. Back in August, the company announced its plans to close 225 stores globally.The parent company is also shuttering 130 Banana Republic stores. The moves announced Thursday are part of a three-year plan that will see Gap focus on outlets and its e-commerce business. Gap joins other clothing retailers in trying to reinvent themselves during the COVID-19 pandemic. The outbreak forced many non-essential stores to temporarily close in the spring and early summer.On Tuesday, the San Francisco-based company said they are "exploring is the possible closure of our company-operated Gap stores in the United Kingdom, France, Ireland, and Italy at the end of the second quarter in 2021."Gap Inc plans to shut down more Gap and Banana Republic stores amid the pandemic.By 2024, the company plans to close 350 mall locations in North America. 1053

NEW YORK (AP) — A federal judge in New York has ruled that Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf assumed his position unlawfully. U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis's ruling invalidates Wolf’s suspension of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which shields young people from deportation. Wolf effectively suspended the program in July, a month after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against President Donald Trump's efforts to end it. Garaufis wrote Saturday that DHS failed to follow an order of succession established when then-Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen resigned in April 2019. NEW YORK CITY — Police are looking for two suspects they say attacked a woman who asked them to put on masks in a Brooklyn subway station.Authorities said the assault occurred inside the Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center station last Friday afternoon.According to the NYPD, as a man and a woman were about to get on a station elevator, the 60-year-old victim asked if they could wear a mask if they wanted to ride the elevator with her.According to police, the pair refused. Surveillance video shows the two try to forcefully push past her.When the woman tried to prevent them from getting on the elevator with her, the two suspects hit her repeatedly in the face and body, authorities said. The male and female then fled the scene.Police said the victim suffered bruising to her face and pain to her legs. She was taken to a nearby hospital where she was treated and released.The male suspect is between the ages of 16 and 20 and was last seen wearing a black knit cap, a black coat, gray pants, and a light-colored backpack.The female suspect is also thought to be between the ages of 16 and 20 and was last seen wearing a black-and-white sweater, dark-colored pants, and carrying a black backpack.This story was originally published by Mark Sundstrom on WPIX in New York City. 1285
