BEIJING, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan met Chairman of the Presidential Committee for the G20 Summit of the Republic of Korea (ROK) II SaKong Tuesday in Beijing. BEIJING, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- China's water resources imbalances between the north and south may worsen due to global climate changes and economic activities, said Vice Minister of Water Resources Hu Siyi.Typically, China's north is dry while its south has abundant water supplies.China will face unprecedented challenges in saving water in the next five-year plan from 2011 to 2015, said Hu at a national water-saving meeting in Zhengzhou, capital of central China's Henan Province, late September.Compared with the 1956-1979 period, rainfall in the Yellow River, Huaihe River, Haihe River and Liaohe River vallies in the 1980-2000 period had dropped six percent on average and river and lake water resources decreased 17 percent in these areas, according to figures from the Ministry of Water Resources.China's accelerated urbanization has pushed up demand for water.If the population in Beijing keeps on climbing, the water brought by the near completed South-to-North Water Diversion Project would not be enough, Hu said.China's water-saving targets during the 12th five-year plan from 2011 to 2015 include a 30-percent cut in water use for every 10,000 yuan (1,490 U.S. dollars) of gross industrial output, Hu said.

URUMQI, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang has called for breakthroughs in the development of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region during his five-day inspection tour there.Breakthroughs should be achieved in efforts to resettle herdsmen, promote bilingual and vocational education, utilize natural resources, and develop industrial parks, said Zhou, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.Zhou told local officials to thoroughly carry out policies set by the central government to develop Xinjiang and strive for the improvement of well-being for the locals.Zhou traveled across the sprawling Xinjiang, about one sixth of China's territory, from Sept. 19 to 24. HANOI, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Thursday met separately with the prime ministers of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos in Hanoi ahead of a series of summits between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its partners.At the meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Wen hailed Vietnam's preparation for the upcoming meetings, saying that China would join with Vietnam to ensure the success of the meetings at a time of profound changes going on in the international situation.Wen called for proper handling of the issue of South China Sea, saying it is of vital importance to the sound and stable development of China-Vietnam relations.He noted that China and Vietnam have established a negotiation mechanism to solve the issue, and he hoped the two countries would discuss and sign an agreement on basic principles guiding the solution to the issues of the sea as early as possible.Dung agreed with Wen's remarks.Expressing the high importance China placed on the summits, Wen said China would strengthen communication and coordination with Vietnam and work with all sides concerned to push forward East Asian cooperation.Wen said friendship and cooperation have remained the mainstream of China-Vietnam relations since the establishment of the bilateral diplomatic ties 60 years ago. He said sound and stable development of the relationship is of vital importance to both sides and the region.The premier vowed that China would maintain high-level contacts with Vietnam, establish a hotline between leaders of the two countries, and strengthen consultation between all departments to enhance their mutual trust, deal with disputes appropriately and promote common interest.
