SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Former KUSI anchor Sandra Maas is suing the station for million, alleging retaliatory termination and violation of the Equal Pay Act. Maas’ attorneys claim McKinnon Broadcasting Company and the company's actions “have caused, and will continue to cause, Maas emotional distress and loss of earnings."Maas was hired by KUSI in 2004 as a morning news co-anchor. In 2010, she was promoted to evening co-anchor. The lawsuit states Maas initiated additional duties for herself in 2016 when she started writing, producing and anchoring a weekly segment called “Healthy Living.” In 2017, court documents say Maas suspected she was underpaid compared to her male peers. The lawsuit claims her suspicions were confirmed when a former manager told her a male co-anchor was being paid ,000 more than her per year. The lawsuit states that in December of 2017, Maas brought up the issue of pay inequity during contract negotiations and “was given the runaround.” After sending a written complaint to her manager and the station’s general manager, Mike McKinnon Jr., the lawsuit says McKinnon told Maas he “did not like the tone of [her] email.”The last few paragraphs of the lawsuit claim failure to provide equal pay to women, gender and/or age discrimination, failure to prevent discrimination, and retaliation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Each year around this time, we marvel as gray whales make their way from Alaska down to Baja, Mexico, to give birth. However, this year's migration started late. "This year, with the migration being so late, a lot of the moms aren't actually making it to the lagoon before they give birth. So we're seeing a lot of these pregnant females giving birth on the migration this year," said Captain Domenic Biagini, founder of Gone Whale Watching San Diego.While the migration is late, Biagini says the whales look much healthier than last year, when many died. "Likely these whales spent a little longer feeding this year to make up for what they didn't get last year, and with less sea ice than normal, they're able to actually go further north looking for food, which then also makes the migration longer," said Captain Dom. Biagini says the calves aren't strong enough to dive, so he's already seen close calls with private boaters speeding by. "The problem is a lot of these grays, especially the moms with babies, are intentionally trying to keep a low profile and people aren't realizing that they're there as they're flying through thee areas. So it's really crucial to be conscious of your speed and surroundings during gray whale season," said Biagini.He says while the newborns are more vulnerable, the moms do a good job keeping a low-profile.They should arrive at their destination in a week or two. 1433

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dramatic dash camera video shows the moment two cars sped along San Diego’s State Route 94, leading one of the drivers to lose control and crash. The race happened Thursday just after 8 a.m. near the College Grove avenue exit of westbound SR-94. Video shows two sedans, an Audi and a BMW, drive up fast behind the witness' vehicle and pass him, before the BMW crashes into an unsuspecting driver.“Just a complete surprise,” said a witness who shared his video with 10News and requested to remain anonymous. The witness was taking his mother to the doctor when the sedans approached him from behind. “I just see them come out of nowhere and spin out, and runs into the back of the car,” said the witness. “In real time, I didn’t even see the other car.” “My first thought was, he was running from the cops,” the witness told 10News. The witness said the BMW driver involved in the crash stopped to check on the innocent victim, then went back across the road. No one was injured in the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP is investigating what officers say is possibly a racing crash. No arrests have been made. “Ain’t no real reason to go that fast with that many people on the road,” the witness said. “He completely totaled the back of that guy’s car and there could have been a kid back there.” 1348

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Friday, small businesses throughout San Diego came together against a proposed ban of Styrofoam and single-use plastics while proponents are holding their ground, citing environmental impacts.Some San Diego County cities voted to ban the Styrofoam containers at restaurants as part of an effort to clean up the environment.Those in favor of the ban say it will help keep debris out of the ocean.
