SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — There has been a recent spike in the number of school threats in San Diego County, with five this week alone.Three of those have resulted in arrests at Poway High, Fallbrook High, and El Capitan High. Law enforcement is investigating other threats at Scripps Ranch High and Steele Canyon High."We do see where it comes to school threats that they come in packs," District Attorney Summer Stephan told 10News during an interview Thursday afternoon at the Hall of Justice. She believes that because many of the threats are born out of attention-getting behavior, they may be copycat scenarios, explaining why they may occur in waves.RELATED: 665

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Three years after a gunman opened fire on a Las Vegas country concert and the memories are still fresh for survivors. This year marks a few important milestones for families and survivors.A settlement announced one day before the three-year anniversary, meaning 0 million will go to victims and families. Also, Nevada’s Governor Steve Sisolak added two more to the list of people who died as a result of the shooting. Since 2017, two people died as a result of injuries they got that night, meaning 60 people were killed.RELATED: Las Vegas mass shooting: Settlement reached on shooting lawsuits, MGM to pay up to 0M to victimsChelsea Romo, a Temecula local, was at the concert and shot in the face. She lost her eye and now three years later, has had seven surgeries and now has a prosthetic eye. She said because of the chaos of physically healing the past few years, this is the first anniversary where she’s been able to grieve more.“I was going through so many surgeries and having so much at the time of the first and second that it kind of kept my mind so busy and so focused on that, and I tried so hard not to feel but this year I feel it a lot more,” said Romo.Doctors thought Romo would lose her sight and speech, but she defied those odds. There is still a long road to recovery for her, but she’s thankful for the life she’s been blessed with. She takes every October 1 to remember those who weren’t as lucky.RELATED: Las Vegas remembers victims on third anniversary of mass shooting“This is the time we come together and we remember and we love on each other and we think about the people that are not here now,” she said.Tiffany Huizar was just 18 when she was shot in her elbow, hand and stomach. Now, at 21, she said she’s had to grow up faster than most her age.“It definitely made me grow up super fast because I was now dealing with things normal 18 teens aren’t dealing with. So when my friends said hey let’s go to the movies tonight, let’s go bowling, it was like I automatically knew I couldn’t do that. I knew I couldn’t be in that closed place,” said Huizar.Huizar added that the news of the settlement has added a little bit of closure this year. She hopes other large corporations learn from this shooting and add better security. The two survivors are represented my James Frantz, a San Diego attorney. 2361

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three of the four American tourists killed in a helicopter crash in Kenya on Sunday night were from San Diego.Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey told 10News David Baker, a Coronado resident, was killed in the crash. The US Embassy identified Brandon Stapper and Asher Burke, who also lived in San Diego, as victims earlier in the day Monday. They were riding in a helicopter that crashed in the Central Island National Park in Lake Turkana on country's northern border at 8:35 p.m. Sunday (2:35 a.m. ET), Kenya's Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement posted on its website."A rescue team was dispatched immediately and they arrived at the Central Island at around 11:20 p.m. and located the wreckage at 3:20 a.m. with no survivors," Kenya's aviation chief Gilbert Kibe said.READ: Pilot, 4 Americans killed in helicopter crash in KenyaStaff at Stapper's graphics company near Mission Hills told 10News that they learned Sunday evening the self-made entrepreneur was killed in the accident. In 2015, Stapper, was listed among San Diego's Top 10 Entrepreneurs to watch as a 29-year-old. According to his website, he left Michigan at the age of 20 "and drove to California to chase his dream. 6 months later, he saved 0 while working in a restaurant and purchased a custom decal machine on eBay with a friend.""Stapper has now founded, acquired, and invested in a broad portfolio of businesses and real estate. He currently spends his time acquiring, growing, and investing in companies as one of the Co-Founders and Operating Partners at a boutique private equity firm called Crown Grown," his web site says.Stapper's employees described him as being "more like a brother than a boss" and "was one of the most caring people he’s ever met.""He was a guy that everyday woke up with a smile on his face," said Brandon Blum, who met Stapper eight years ago through the San Diego Entrpreneurs' Organization."He had ambitions like nobody I'd ever seen. He had a spark like no one I'd ever seen in my life," said Blum.Stapper had traveled to Kenya to support Burke, who had recently purchased a lodge that he hoped to market as a retreat for business owners."Asher's vision was for entrepreneurs to come out and experience Kenya in an amazing way without rules," said Brett Stapper, Brandon's brother who had also been out to Kenya recently.David Baker, who worked in commercial real estate and owned several businesses was also on board."He was so excited about this trip," remembered Richard Bailey, the mayor of Coronado who was also good friends with Baker."Dave was an adventurer. More than anything, Dave lived life to the fullest," said Bailey. They were all actively involved in local business and entreprenerial activities. Alex Pellegrino, the president of the San Diego Entrepreneurs' Organization, told 10News, "we don't have a statement at this time other than the entire EO community is devastated by this tragedy."Investigators have not yet established the cause of the crash, according to the National Police Service. But according to Bailey, he got a phone call from Baker's girlfriend who suspected weather was to blame."It sounded as though they had been caught up in a wind storm or rain storm and was, in her opinion, likely the source of the problems the helicopter was experiencing," said Bailey.A local news outlet reported Monday that the two choppers had taken tourists to the island, which borders Ethiopia and is known for its colony of Nile crocodiles.CNN reported that air mishaps have become frequent in recent months in Kenya, a popular destination for international tourists visiting the east African nation for its vast wildlife and coastal attractions.Five people, including two Americans tourists, were killed in February after a small passenger plane crashed in Kenya's Mukatano forest. In July, 10 people aboard a small aircraft died after it crashed in the Aberdare forest in the mountainous region of the country.Stay with 10News for updates on this developing story.CNN contributed to this report. 4059

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The owners of a Webster-area restaurant that has been broken into in recent days decided to set up their own overnight sting operation, and their plan led to two arrests. At around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, the owners of Trevi Ristorante on 4703 Federal Blvd., put together their own stakeout and waited for anyone who would try to break into the business. The restaurant had been burglarized three times in the past week, including one incident in which a safe was taken. Jonathan Romero, the owners’s son, told ABC 10News, “We’re tired of it.”While the owner remained on the roof, his son waited across the street and a family friend watched from behind the eatery. After several hours, they noticed an SUV park in an alley behind the restaurant and two men get out of the vehicle. As the family observed the two people go through gates to the restaurant’s back doors, the owner’s son called 911.San Diego police officers arrived at the scene and took one of the would-be burglars into custody. However, the other man climbed up the side of the building and ran across the roof.
