The body of a New Jersey man, whose body was recovered 1,500 feet underwater in California, is considered to be the deepest recovery ever performed in the United States and Canada, officials say.According to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, 29-year-old Ryan Normoyle rented a boat on Lake Tahoe on Aug. 10.That evening, Ryan's rental boat washed ashore in Glenbrook, Nevada, but Normoyle wasn't on it.On the boat, the department said they found Normoyle's phone, which recorded Ryan jumping off the boat into the lake. The video also showed the boat drifting away, which the department said was because Ryan had left in gear.The New York Times reported that the camera captured Normoyle trying to swim to the boat for about two minutes before disappearing from the frame.With the help of GPS data captured from Ryan's phone while recorded, the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department, Douglas County Sheriff's Office, the Washoe County Marine Unit, and the University of California Davis Research Team helped in the search. On Sept. 23, the nonprofit Bruce's Legacy, which specializes in underwater recovery, was called in by Ryan's family to aid in the investigation.In a blog post, Bruce's Legacy founder Keith Cormican detailed how winds chased them off the lake around noon, and on the second day, they ran into electrical issues. Not wanting to give up, Cormican used sonar on the ROV after losing power to it.After a few hours, a body image, which was identified as Ryan's, showed up on the sonar at 1,551 feet. Unfortunately, they lost hold of him and weren't able to bring him to the surface, but on Sept. 27, they found Ryan at 1,565 feet, and after two hours, the crew pulled up Normoyle's body, by hand, to the surface.According to the police department, Cormican said this was the deepest recorded recovery in the United States and Canada. Previously, the deepest recovery in Lake Tahoe was in 2018 at a depth of 1,062 feet. 1944

TAMPA BAY (AP) — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league plans to invite vaccinated health care workers to the Super Bowl in Tampa, Florida, as guests of the league.In a letter to Rob Higgins, president of the host committee for the Super Bowl, that was obtained by The Associated Press, Goodell wrote that he wanted to “honor and thank health care workers for their extraordinary service during a pandemic” as well as promote the importance of vaccinations and the wearing of masks in public.Goodell added in the letter: “We all know that over the past year, these frontline workers have put their own lives at risk to the benefit of society and we owe them our ongoing gratitude. We also know that they will remain essential for months to come to treat those who are ill and administer vaccines. The 2020 hurricane season is already breaking records.Hurricane Isaias, which just passed through the Carolinas and the northeast, killing several people, was the season’s ninth named storm, making it the earliest in a year we have ever reached that number.It was also the fifth storm of the season to make landfall. It’s the fastest we’ve gotten to five land-falling storms since the old record set back in 1916."From a landfall perspective, this has already been a very, very active landfall season,” said Dr. Phil Klotzbach, from Colorado State University’s Tropical Weather and Climate Research Center.The group released its final predictions for the 2020 hurricane season on Wednesday, predicting above-average activity with 24 named storms and 12 hurricanes, five of them being major hurricanes of Category 3 strength or greater."Typically, we do one final update in early August to give you one final last best estimate to see what the season’s going to be like, and if we realized we really screwed things up until now, it’s one last shot at a mulligan,” Klotzbach explained.Before you say these records are just par for the course in 2020 there is a caveat. The 2020 season has not produced nearly the same amount of Accumulated Cyclone Energy, or ACE, as past years.For example, there were fewer named storms by this time in 2005, but the storms that did form in the Atlantic through the end of July of that year produced far more energy, including Hurricane Dennis, a Category 4, and Emily, a Category 5. That hurricane season went on to produce Hurricane Katrina, which battered New Orleans, and Hurricane Wilma, making it the worst hurricane season in recorded history.“Normally, a lot of storm activity in June and July doesn’t say much about how active the season is,” said Klotzbach.Klotzbach says the two big predictors of a hurricane season are ocean temperature in the deep tropics and wind shear, which is how wind direction changes at different levels of the atmosphere.This year, water in the Tropical Atlantic is the fourth warmest on record, meaning there is more fuel for hurricanes. July also had the second-lowest vertical wind sheer on record, meaning there is not much to cap a storm’s potential.It is why Klotzbach thinks once the peak of hurricane season arrives on August 20, we will have to make sure we are ready for whatever is thrown our way.“The primary reason why we’re forecasting such an active season isn’t as much the storm activity that we’ve already had, but the large-scale conditions we’ve observed during July and what we expect to see during the peak of the season,” said Klotzbach. 2638

SUNSET CLIFFS, Calif., (KGTV) - There are mounting concerns about the stability of the some of the bluffs at Sunset Cliffs. The City of San Diego was tipped off about the cliff collapse near Hill Street last week. City crews surveyed the collapse then cordoned it off with yellow caution tape to discourage people from getting to close to the section in question. The city says the collapses are likely from rain. “There is a big crack there right up against the edge where it looks like that’s the next piece that’s going to fall,” said photographer Jim Grant, “it’s a good thing that somebody came in and put some protection up.” Grant spends nearly everyday photographing the cliffs and says he has seen his fair share of people getting too close. “They don’t realize that one slip and when you fall 60 or 70 feet, it leaves a permanent mark that’s for sure,” added Grant. Officials urge people to avoid the section that has collapsed and to always use caution when traversing through Sunset Cliffs. The city says it will have its engineers evaluate the section after this weekend’s weather before determining what steps to take next. 1145

TEMECULA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The United States Geological Survey is reporting that an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.4 struck near Temecula. According to the USGS, the quake hit around 6:24 p.m. roughly 20 miles east of Temecula. A 3.0 magnitude aftershock hit the same area at 6:53 p.m. Residents of the town reported feeling the quake. According to the USGS "did you feel it" map, residents all over San Diego and Orange Counties felt the earthquake. Area businesses reported feeling shaking.
